Shortly after slinging my luggage into my downtown Minneapolis hotel room I ordered a Lyft ride to Surly. Arriving at this historic facility I noticed throngs of patrons, many exchanging Uber/Lyft rides with each other. I followed the line of folks who seemed to gravitate towards an entrance, and yes, it was the correct place. Once inside I quickly inquired at the host/hostess stand about seating and opted for breathing on folks at the bar until I scored a seat. Fortunately for me this only took a few minutes, and I am glad for the line to order beers was long. I sat here for a few hours sampling half pints and enjoying a couple small plates from the kitchen. Service was by committee and I never had to wait until my glass was empty to order another. The food was absolutely divine and I hear upstairs is even better. The lamb meatballs were a worthy accompaniment to the bold beers in front of me. Prices are quite reasonable considering the quality. This is certainly a place beer tourists and locals should visit.

Visited here very late on a Saturday night on Memorial Day weekend ’17. the place was packed, no room at the bar, so I sat outside on at the picnic tables with some friendly Minnesotans, Service was prompt and friendly. Selection is superb, food is incredible. Great ambiance outside with the grain silos all lit up. Would be a regular haunt if I lived in the Twin Cities. Nice to see a brewery that still serves food - rare these days (no, food trucks don’t count).

This is definitely a place to see for all those who enjoy beer. The brewery is MASSIVE and always packed the interior and exterior is beautiful and the outdoor seating is large. If one is not eating, seating can be lacking. Food is some of the highest quality one can find in the city, especially a their brewer’s table. Prices are reasonable for what you get. their pours are reasonably priced as well as their selection is huge. Their beer is good, but seems to be hitting a plateau. Overall, it is worth the visit.

Yeah, this is a pretty amazing place. High production value with the brewing equipment behind a full wall of glass. Huge space with a long metal bar and a bunch of long communal tables behind. Modern metal, glass and blue light style decor in general. 24 beers on tap, all Surly, including some specials at any time. Doing a good business at open on a Wednesday, but not full or anything. Food was decent, but the brisket was not first tier as BBQ goes. I have heard great things about the food though, so maybe I just chose poorly or got unlucky. No beer flights is a bit of a bummer for a destination brewery with 24 beers on tap, but prices on pours are really reasonable, and some (mostly the high ABV stuff) are available as 4oz pours for $3. Parking lot is large, but it is worth noting that the walk to the door is not short, which could be an issue if its pouring rain or 100 below zero, both of which are common enough in Minneapolis. Service was quite solid; good enough for me to scroll past the man-bun action. Beers are Surly, so that is a known quantity (although I guess we shall see what happens now that Todd is gone). There is a Pokestop here so you can dork out on Go while you drink if you like.

Easily accessed from the green line light rail. Big open beer hall with lots of glass and steel. One can see the tanks. Packed on my visit on a tuesday afternoon. I was a bit let down by the selection; with one or two exceptions it was all stuff they’ve been making for 5-10 years. The beer is world-class, of course, but if it’s the same stuff you can get in town why bother slogging out here?

A new big hall filled with tables and windows to the brewing vessels. It felt a bit soulless. Food was a bit too fancy and expensive. 18 beers on tap and they surely have world class beers, no doubt about that. Darkness, wow it’s good. No flights. Friendly service.

Went for lunch and hardly anyone was there and the group I was with just went in and picked out a table. This was a big no-no and not 1, not 2, but 3 servers saw fit to let us know there was a service counter to check-in and be seated. Okay, we got that out of the way--when our actual server came over, someone shared this with her and she laughed and said it was no big deal. Apparently it was a big deal for servers 1-3. Big, open beerhall-type setting with a variety of different-sized tables. One wall was open to the outside (it was a nice day in September). A member of the group I was with said the food was good, but a bit pricey--I wouldn’t disagree. Very surprised that they didn’t have beer-tasting flights. You can get either an 8 oz. or a 16 oz. of whatever beer you’re after, but that’s it. Food really wasn’t bad--I had the chilequiles, which measured up well with those I’ve had elsewhere. The real draw was the chance to get a beer that isn’t available in can or bottle. My Hopshifter #6 was an okay IPA, nothing too special. It was a fun place to stop on a bike ride--almost easier to get in there on a bike than by car, as it’s just off the U’s bike/bus transitway. I might stop in again sometime if in the area.

Spent nearly 8 hours here sipping through most of the beers they had on tap. Yes, we took it slow! Food here was great, bartenders were fun and had a lot to say about the beers we tried. Destination brewery indeed.
