My new favorite in town. Since the service is 100% better than the Toad, it’s easily taken over as my favorite between the 2. The owners Joe McBane and Casey Walpert have both outdone themselves with T&M. The inside is all new, but designed to look classy and unique instead of suburban/mall pub tacky. I find the wooden slat-topped stools in the bar leave my butt wishing for padding after 15 minutes, but all the other seating is very comfortable. The draft selection is excellent and varied as is the bottle choice. I’m disappointed that there’s only 1 cask line, but I’ll happily live with it! They offer samples of drafts which of course is very nice. The staff really hustles around the place but it has never made me feel rushed, just well served. I’ve eaten every time I’ve gone and the food has ranged from OK to excellent. Overall it’s a fantastic edition to Rochester. I’ll be making many visits.

Great selection, and it rotates like crazy. Like the ambience, art work and staff. Also seems to be a place of choice for young ladies, FWIW, though maybe they’ve moved on by now. (they are still there) The main problem when I was there is it was packed, especially the bar area and it was very difficult to get beer. A large problem if you came to drink beer.
Have been back several other times, top beer selections and ’total tap takeovers’ by various interesting brewers from time to time. Bartenders know their stuff.
Food is decent, tasty and fairly priced.
Bumping rating up.
This is the best place in the ROC by far. Bumping again.
This is one of the best beer bars I’ve been into in a long time. Stopped here while on a business trip in Rochester, NY. The bar is located where McGreggors used to be. The place has been completely redone and is gorgeous. There are about 30 taps that are constantly rotating, keeping the beer fresh. There may be other places that have a larger tap selection (not many), but these guys are constantly rotating their beers to increase the variety. Sampled a Great Divide Yeti Imperial Stout and a Lagunitas Olde Gnarly Wine both on tap! Finished with a Trappistes Rochefort 10, which is rare to find at a non-belgian beer bar. Had the bangers and mash for dinner which were probably the best of my life. Skipp’s in Greece, NY makes sausage specially for Tap and Mallet that cannot be purchased outside of the bar. The bartenders are very knowledgable of the beer they are pouring, and are constantly tasting the taps so that they know what to suggest to customers. This place really is a top knotch establishment and a great addition to the greater Rocherster area.
I’m not sure if I’ve ever been to a better bar... bottle and tap selection was outstanding. Many Cantillon, Hanssens, other lambics, sours in bottle. Quite a tap list as well. Food was excellent, if a little fu-fu and overpriced. Beer prices were also a touch high as well. Overall, the best place in Rocheter.
Had drinks and dinner here with family. Can’t say I’ve been anyplace with a better beer selection. 20-30 on tap and 100+ bottles. They had 2009 BCBS on the menu, albeit for $18/12 oz. Service and food were excellent. Nice ambience with local art on the walls. Best restaurant in Rochester for a beer lover.
My favorite bar in all of Rochester. My friends and I will try out different beers while lounging in the corner playing darts. A really nice, cozy atmosphere that draws laid-back people. Paintings of faces on the wall kinda wierd me out, though. And if the dart board is taken up, better hope your with good company or the place could seem a little boring. I’ve never had that problem though. Like I said, this bar attracts cool beer enthusiasts who come for the hops and malt (T&M has an outstanding selection). If beer isn’t for you, then there’s no reason to chill here as it’s the beer that sets it far apart from its counterparts. #11 on 12102009 DG.
I see I’ve forgotten to rate this place even though I’ve been going here for years. I love the fact they seem to update their online beer list daily.(Best of any bar I’ve been to) The regular bartenders that know my face, know I’m ready to order as I walk up to the bar. Always a great selection of beers on tap. Once in awhile I get a hard to find bottle. The food is good too. Great place.
8/25/2009 I went here two weeks ago while on vacation with the family. Our visit was on a Wednesday evening for a late dinner. We were there at about 8pm and the place was kind of quiet. A few people at the bar and two or three other tables in the dining area.
The building sits on a corner, you walk in from the left hand side and the bar is immediately to the left along that wall. There is a dining area off to the right which is where we sat. Not much in the way of decor, kind of plain with paintings on the wall each one with a price tag on it.
They had 30 or so beers on tap and one cask the night we were there. They also have a pretty good bottle list as well. I stuck with some regionals that I can’t get at home. Custom Brewcrafters, and Great Lakes helped me out this evening.
The food was really good, I had the Mojo Pork, my wife had the Cuban, and the kids split a steak. Points off for no kids menu! My wife complained about how foo foo the menu is. Meh.
Our server was right on top of things, very attentive and easily found.
Great little beer bar, if I lived a bit closer I could see spending some time in here.

Tap and Mallet is a great place to have a beer. They respect beer as well as anyone in Rochester.
The taps are constantly evolving and it really makes you feel a sense of "gotta be there" because sometimes they move too fast. The selection is all over the board and you should always find something you want there.
The beer lines are clean, the bartenders are extremely knowledgeable, the service keeps up to the pace of the bar.
The food is quite good and evolves as well. There are some items that are better values than others but I’ve never walked away disappointed.
The prices are higher and that is why the value takes a hit but if you want a place that will give you a beer the way it should be enjoyed this is it. I only wish they have more beer engines.
