I really wanted to like the Berghoff. High ceilings, wood. And paintings of alpine scenes. Sat at the bar. About seven beers were on, not all in German styles. They had a holiday beer, with no deScription. When I asked the bartender about it, she said it had some spice and it was smooth. When I asked what type of beer it was, she called it a copper ale. So basically no training on what they are serving. $6 for 16 oz, too expensive for the low quality of Berghoff beers. I did not eat but might return to try the food.

Went for. Work lunch so I consumed no beers. The menu did show what they did carry and is mostly BMC crap with bit burger and one other German lager. A rad disappointing. I will say the place is larger and clean. Typical German menu and everyone in my party was satisfied with the food. I’d deffinatly come back to eat, but if I am looking for a few beers I’d just scroll past.

I thought this place was only okay. The beers were kind of mediocre, not terrible, but not good either. The food was fine, but hardly memorable. Also, they close really early. Came here straight from checking in at my hotel down the street at maybe 8:30, and the place was basically empty. Started closing up not long after. I guess it’s a happy hour only type of spot. Bartender was pretty friendly, so that’s the plus here.

Old school joint that is worth checking out for a fun lunch. Rootbeer is better than the beer, but sampler is cheap enough to try.

This covers mainly the Berghoff’s bar, which is next to their restaurant, one of the oldest surviving restaurants in Chicago, and holder of the first liquor license issued after Prohibition ended. A real, traditional German restaurant, so traditional the bar has no ladies’ restroom (need to go to the restaurant). The bar has all Berghoff beers on tap, now much improved since they got their recipes rejiggered by Randy Mosher and brewed at Point. Bar staff are mostly long-timers, as are the restaurant’s waiters. Crowded after 5, of course, and with one of the earliest closing times of any Chicago bar; but being downtown and not near the theatres, the crowd pretty much dies out after rush hour anyway. There’s a glassed in counter opposite the bar where sometimes sandwiches are made. Otherwise, get something to eat at the restaurant, or the lunchtime cafe on the lower floor. And here are five words I never thought I’d put together until I came here for dinner: Their creamed spinach is great! Additional info: They do have guest taps as well, the last time I was there they had OB Dale’s Pale Ale and a Left Hand on tap. But I saw too that all their beers are served in a shaker glass; no other glassware styles noticed.
