If you think Athens or Greece in general is not the place for a good beer, well... prepare to be mind blown and reconsider for sure.No matter where you are located, you should do your self a favor and visit Chalandri and the Local Pub.Cozy and non smoking place with friendly and knowledgeable staff that knows beer and are willing to help you if you are just starting to experiment with quality beer.Huge collection of taps (21) with constant rotation of quality ales. All the Greek micro scene is always there, as long with quality gems from around the world.Rum Barrel Aged Boris, variants of Alesmith Speedway etc made their appearance on tap.Τhere is always a good selection of bottles and cans behind the bar too. This last month amazing ipas like Alchemist’s Heady Topper, Crusher and Focal Banger, Russian River’s Pliny The Elder and Tree House Green were on the stand.Go as a stranger, leave as a friend...
Visited 10.12.16 in the early evening. The best pub we’ve been to in Athens. Off the beaten path, but well worth the ride. Run by the same people behind the Lazy Bulldog pub in Gazi. But whereas the LB has an English pub feel to it, here it’s more Irish-themed, with lots of Jameson on display, and again, Guinness and Kilkenny on tap, that sure don’t distract from the superb offerings of sours, imperial stouts and local. Grabbed cans of Alchemist releases! Staff is really friendly and knowledgeable, and sent us to other bars of our non-beer interest. Great music, no food as far as I remember and reasonable prices for the selection. A must.
I tried to visit this place once in August but realised it was closed for the summer holidays like most of the rest of Athens. I went back in April and was welcomed and invited to sit at the patron’s table with all the local ratebeerians where we were treated to several rare bottles! Any beergeek is likely to feel very welcome in this place. The selection is good and likely to be the best in Athens (don’t have the overview to know for sure). I enjoyed several fresh beers from the new Solo brewery and noticed they had a good selection of local stuff as well as some of the better international craft beers. The place was quite full on a Friday evening but it seemed to still be possible to find a spot by the bar or outside. This is a must visit if you find yourself in Athens outside the month of August :-) The Chalandri neighbourhood is somewhat off the centre and the nearest metro station is about 20 minutes of walking from there but buses go frequently.
Visited here as part of my European beer trip. Outstanding establishment. Came in fairly early and sat at the bar, immediately greated by the bartenders. Asked me what I liked and proceeded to recommend a nice Greek session ale to start with which was perfect. The layout is not large but fit the place with the bar layout, seating inside and the bar memorabilia surrounding the bar. Throughout the night was continually looked after with other recommendations along with some light things to snack on. Locals started to fill the place up but they never missed a beat on service and you can tell their patrons returned because of the ambiance, local feel, everyone knowing each other and of course, arguably best beer list in Greece. Later in the evening ended up talking with the owner/manager about the Greek beer scene, my trip and other items of interest. Made recommendations for other places to visit both in Athens and in other Greek locations. I can tell why this is a top beer bar for all the reasons I highlighted above. Overall, a must visit in Athens or just in Greece in general. I plan to come back with my fiancee in another year and we will be stopping in for at least one visit while in town. Cheers!
