A hugely welcome addition to the Sydney beer scene. This new specialist beer bar has 20 beers on tap plus the best bottled beer list in the city. The tap list changes all the time and you can check out the latest line-up here: http://thelocaltaphouse.blogspot.com/ The ambiance is quirky with tiled walls and an eclectic array of seating. The bar service is efficient and helpful, if a little cold. The beers are served at something like the right temperature - the first bar in Sydney to do so, as far as I know. Bravo for that. The tap list isn’t always exciting but that’s probably more of a reflection of the state of Australian micro-brewing than any failure on the part of the pub. The food is competent by all accounts. A huge thumbs up for what they’re trying to do here.

Big bar, dark wood, bar in the middle. Good number of seating, but clearly not enough on a busy early friday evening. 20 taps with Australian micros, of the 5 beers i had quality was good to very good. Fast and Freindly service. Fair prices and a 5 piece sampler avaible at 17 dollars.
Impressive taplist, with a good range of Australian craft and a few imported. Beers were all in good shape. Server was friendly, the only problem being that he didn’t tell us they were closing in 30 minutes until after I’d ordered my tasting paddle, meaning I had to rush a little more than I would have liked. Prices were reasonable for Sydney, with tasting trays of 5 for $17. Nice place.
This is an awesome place. Deceptively massive, with many levels of seating, including a roof top area with its own bar. Excellent tap list and they do custom paddles. Prices are standard (high) for the city. We had some dinner here too - the food was decent. Service is friendly and helpful. A must stop when in Sydney.
I’ve been here a few times over the years and it is certain they have for a long time been streets ahead of all others for their range of decent beer. However, the timing of visiting can be a major factor in whether it is an enjoyable experience. With close proximity to the SCG and SFS it is prone to loud noisy crowds whenever there are events at these stadiums, especially before and after. During such times service can also be very slow, and as such the overall enjoyment is lessened. With lots of other venues (nearby) now offering a good range of taps, it can now be avoided at such times. The food in the dining room upstairs was excellent the one time I tried. At quieter times it is indeed a great place to sample a few great brews.
All of a sudden, realised I somehow haven’t rated this place. Been here many times and keep going back. Amazing selection with an ever revolving tap list with a nice focus on local Australian brews. The place gets pretty pumping on the busy nights and the staff know their beer! The food is always good to line the stomach. There’s a cool few levels including a nice relaxed roofless area at the top which is nice on a sunny Sunday. Best beer pub in Sydney hands down.
Visited twice more on the latest trip, October 9 and 10 (2015). On the 9th had one beer served as another/incorrect beer, pointed this out, but was just received by "my colleague must’ve messed up, sorry" which is not acceptable! At least give me the beer I actually ordered... On the 10th had great service once more. So for most times have had fantastic service, then once what I’d never accept anywhere, guess it depends on who’s working, since it wasn’t even that busy at the time. Can get crowded and can get noisy. Good selection on tap though. Nice with the tasting paddle system, how it is implemented. Got the feeling there’s an upstairs part too, on 5 visits have only been by the bar myself.
Visited July 10 and 16 (2013). First was evening and rather busy, some live music played. Second arrived rather late after calling ahead and checking they’d be open a while longer. Both times nice, fast, friendly service. Good knowledge of the beers and when they had time were happy to just chat with you. Getting to the place the first time sent me on a detour, walked up Albion and turned right, did see a crosswalk on the other side before turning the corner, but figured I’d be able to cross easy down the road, but kept walking way past the pub before I had to turn a few streets down and finally track back and got to the correct side of the street. Second time just opted for the one crosswalk on Albion, made it so much easier. About a 20 minute walk or so from the central station/Chinatown, decent area to walk in too. Fairly busy road outside, but didn’t see much space for parking. Not that big, some seating available at tables, I spent most of my time on a chair by the bar. Offered 5x90 tasting paddles for $15, and had some 20 taps plus a hand pump to choose from. Manly domestic craft beers and some imports as well. Also a fair selection of bottles to go for if you wish. No WiFi available. Could see beer from my hometown on bottles, Dugges from Sweden, nice surprise. Also some Danish micros on bottles. First visit had a very nice helpful girl set me up with my beers. Second visit a guy that was very happy to help me out and chat, he was also a metal head so could talk some music as well. One of the better places for my taste I visited in Sydney, and a place many of the breweries and even other bartenders recommended me to visit. From my first to my second visit had a bunch of new beers on tap, so could get another paddle and get busy. Make sure to stop by. Didn’t eat, but saw plenty that did, seems like a nice place to get food as well. Visited once more, the afternoon of August 10. Fairly busy, asked if I could get a paddle and include the handpump, that was no problem at all. Again quite a few new beers on tap.
Visited on 10th and 16th September 2015. This intimate alehouse is close to the popular Oxford Street, situated on a street corner in Flinders St. Friendly staff dispense a fine selection of local and global brews, and offer tasting paddles (flights) in addition. By no means cheap, but you get a good drop in a great atmosphere. The food menu read well but I had eaten elsewhere beforehand. Definitely one of Sydney’s best pubs - I loved it!
