Another Nicholson pub on the Royal Mile, less busy then Deacon Brodie’s. The service was friendly and efficient and the beers were in good shape. There were about 6 hand pumps. There’s an impressive plaster ceiling here too and a chair attached high up on one wall. Apparently it’s a bishop’s throne, possibly the original one which was found buried under the bar area after a fire in 1812. (Visited 3 February 2017).

They had four-five different cask ales from the hand pumps, as well as some more common stuff. I happened to buy a very nice porter and what I found out was the very boring and bland Edinburgh ’80 or whatever it was called - i coulnd’t finish the whole pint. The service was alright but nothing special. Best stay away from the food, burnt was the key word. I’d skip this one and head for maybe the Holyrood 9a or definitely the Brewdog bar if open, both just five minutes away. Visited Dec. 2014.

Yet another real Ale Bar on The Royal Mile. Reasonable selection of well cared for interesting beers with satisfactory service. Worth checking out if you are in the area
