(From my archive:) Another OKish pub in the historical centre of Cambridge, next to The Baron of Beef. I think 3 real ales were on, sampled the Black Sheep Best Bitter. Decent.

Definitely worth popping your head through the door on the way past, Nicholsons have made this a pretty comfortable venue to tick with a good selection of changing real ales. Best of all, they tell you what the next 5 casks will be on the blackboard, so you can know if you’ll need to pop in again in a couple of days. Food is good, but fancy pub prices. Staff friendly. Beer tends to be on good form when I’m here. Good enough to generally be worth 2 visits if I’m here for more than just a weekend, as a few beers will have turned over, that’s for sure. One of the reasons I like Nicholsons.

Nice enough Nicholson’s pubs near the Cambridge city centre. Eight real ales on in reasonable condition, some less common ones alongside the ’usual suspects’. Restaurant-style food service in the slightly more upmarket back of the pub.

A pretty standard Nicholson’s pub in central Cambridge. I like this company’s pubs, as they almost always tend to have a very respectable range of ales and the pubs themselves are always well-kept. This example was no exception, and its location and large front windows afford it great natural light and views of some rather fetching vistas of the world outside. Friendly staff, typical pricing, free wi-fi. It’s easy to visit this pub given its central locus, so i would recommend a visit as you stroll through Cambridge. As a bonus, the bottle shop Cambridge Wine Merchants is just a few doors down.

A nice place when I visited there first time. Time to chat with a very friendly staff. Thornbridge Wild Swan 3,5%, Otley 01 Pontypridd 4,0% & RCH Pitchfork Golden Bitter 4,3% (30.6.2010) A busy place on the second time. Salopian Darwin’s Origin 4,3% (24.6.2011)

This place used to be so good 15 years ago. Not any more though, since the Nicholsons revamp. Still has 8 real ales on cask, but apart from that it’s a pretty soulless place to drink.
