I have only been on opening day, what a crowd. This place is awesome with a great selection of mostly Belgian beer. The beer is not cheap but considering the flight to Belgium and the strength of the Euro, I’d say the prices are reasonable. I can’t wait to go back.
I've been to a million beer bars in a million places and exactly NONE of them were/are as awesome as The Trappist. I defy you to find a more knowledgeable staff, cleaner beer lines and a better ambiance than The Trappist. Clearly, it is without equal.

I do not know that any brewpub can be better than this, but I do wish i could try! Had a fantastic time, can not wait to get out there again!

Awesome selection of draft and bottled beer from Belgium, America, Denmark, Norway, The Netherlands, and more. This place is incredible. Good food obviously made to pair well with the delicious beers they serve. The staff is both friendly and knowledgeable. They are excellent at helping you pick just the right beer. I wish there were more places that took the same care with the products they served. You can’t go wrong with The Trappist unless you just don’t enjoy good beer..
Probably the best beer bar in Oakland. Awesome selection of rare and hard to find beers. And if you can’t find what you want on tap, they probably have it in a bottle. I love that they always have at least one sour on tap, if not more. The staff if super friendly and helpful. Oh, and there’s a patio in the back. Need I say more?
Opening mid-December 2007. Specialty Belgian beer bar in Downtown Oakland. 15 taps. ~130 bottles. Bottle list is Belgian, Dutch, French and American all Belgian styles. Tap selection is a mix of domestic micro and Belgian micro/independent breweries, again with an emphasis on Belgian styles. No American macro beers or corporate beer. High attention paid to proper glassware, serving temperatures. A great effort is also made to keep the bottles cellared at the proper temperature. The decor and atmosphere is laid back, but a beautiful job was done restoring the 1870’s Victorian building they occupy. The owners are casual, knowledgeable and friendly. Excellent bartender, also very knowledgeable and friendly. A must for anyone who enjoys Belgian beer. Less than 5 blocks from 12th St. downtown BART.
The difference between good and excellent can sometimes be in the little details. This place understands the little details. Things like pre-rinsing your clean glass before pouring your beer, to having a huge variety of correct glassware to serve your beer, the Trappist understands beer, and the little things to make the trip a great experience instead of just a great one. The bartenders and staff are knowable and willing to talk about the beers. A large and diverse tap and bottle list makes this a must stop place in the Bay Area. The setting is cozy and the place is quite small. The night I was there the place was packed, but the sound level was quite enough to have a normal conversation with the folks near me. Very nice, I am sure to visit this place often.
I'm not sure what to say here. Come to this bar, no question, hands down a great beer bar. Random and rare selection usually. Great crowd, great service. Prices are reasonable. It's one of the best non brewery bars I have ever been too. Stop reading this and go get a beer!
