I love this place and I have good reason to because it is my local. I happily espouse the virtues of its beers and beer selection. I take pride in the competency of some of its staff and I regularly come to enjoy the company of the erudite and intelligent regulars.
My only gripe is that as it gets busier, it gets louder and that is a consequence of the predominance of hard surfaces. The expense of the product isn’t a griping factor because quality does not come cheap and the business landscape of hospitality in Christchurch is difficult to say the least.
Ratebeer raters will like this pub because the focus is on the beer, not on a tv or pool tables or gamingmachines, which it hasn’t got. It is a must visit in Christchurch.
It is with regret that I have learned that while The Twisted Hop is still standing after the earthquakes, it is to be demolished. It now stands alone and forlorn across from CBD bar. ISo many happy memories from being both staff and a patron. Adieu The Hop. Sadly missed.
The best bar in NZ, House brews cask conditioned and hand pulled. Had the IPA, wee heavy, honey wheat, the barley wine (bottle) amongst others for an awesome lunch/afternoon. Is a must visit everytime I’m in Christchurch
The Twisted hop is located on a pedestrian alley between a few major streets in central Christchurch. The inside is modern but warm and seems to draw a fairly young, hip crowd as well as real beer drinkers. The service was spotty but they seemed short-staffed that night. We ordered bangers and mash and fish and chips (in an English food mood, I suppose) and both dishes were outstanding. The rest of the menu looked very good, too, and wasn’t just traditional English fare. The 8 taps included 1 guest spot and 6 of the 7 house brews were cask conditioned. We each did a tasting rack and had a few drafts/bottles after that, so we got the full range of the brewpub’s offerings, and I can say they were some of the best of the 80+ beers I tried in New Zealand. I think one of the listed taps was out, but we tried all other taps and a few bottles, including the raspiery chocolate porter and the barleywine. This place is a must-visit for anyone in Christchurch for any period of time, and an all-around great brewpub.

Went for lunch with my wife and kids and had a terrific experience. Nice mixture of private tables and booths along with some very large tables with benches in the traditional pub fashion. The food is flat-out awesome! Service was terrific. And the beers were definitely world-class! In addition to their own beers, they have a guest tap as well, along with the bottled special releases of their barley wine (Enigma) and their Raspberry Porter. Some glassware and shirts for sale (I bought 1 of each). You will not be disappointed! Some may find the beers a bit pricey, but the quality makes the price worthwhile IMHO.
Not a lot I can add to the reviews that others haven’t already. A fantastic brewpub that I spent most of the weekend at. The ales are delicious and the food is well matched. Situated in a nice alley and the perfect place to while away a few hours. There’s also plenty of kiwi micros in bottles and a few on draught, a great range available. A must visit in NZ.
Fantastic place. I’ve been here a couple of times - once I practically spent the whole weekend parked up there with a few of my very best friends. Staff are a cut above - when asked what their favourite beer is the answer is the far from predictable 50/50 Golding and Challenger. Laura, our mother for the weekend, will be sorely missed. Food was good (we were the reason this is noisy when busy - Friday night. Great little alley all up. Nice little German cafe next door - check out its fantastic toilets and intersting little range of beer.
