Laid-back atmosphere that has a nice mix of all sorts of people, but seemed mostly the college and punk crowd when I was there. Fairly good selection of brews and nice enough servers. Didn’t try the food. I’m just getting too old for the loud music and smoking places, but otherwise this is a nice hangout.
With stumblin’ distance of my apartment here in Shittown, or Midtown, Atlanta. This place used to have such an awesome selection that I always questioned as to whether I should imbibe here (the Vortex) or at Taco Mac Metropolis. Sadly, this is not the case anymore. The selection, both bottle and tap, have gone to shit. The food is still pretty nice. The burgers are always great. I always receive excellent service, but again, the drink selection (this is a beer website) has gone down hill. With that being said, yes, they do allow smoking, so if you’re going to fucking bitch about the smoke then don’t fucking go here. If you don’t mind, as I don’t, then give it a shot. No I don’t smoke, but I will say this, I am not a pussy and can hack dealing with smoke for one or two hours without feeling that my virgin lungs have been raped. The ambiance is decent. There are a lot of annoying lights, but again, if you don’t like that sort of thing, don’t go.
They have a sister location in Little Five points I prefer. Love the selection of alcohol in general. Lots of beer, lots of scotch, lots of everything else. Great burgers and hot dogs. The staff is a lot of fun, and there isn’t a lot of BS to it. Don’t expect any of them to kiss your ass though, not that kind of place. Probably why I like it so much...
A rock/punk type of bar, not for me. Smoking and the like. Body piercings, not too bad in this conservative state. Some craft beers and imports, nice part of town. But nothing special-one non-local craft beer. Laid back service. Good size of the place.
No idea why this place gets kudos. Selection wasn’t that good to begin with, the special drafts were highly hit or miss in terms of availability. An arrogant customer last policy is printed all over their menu or table folder, and while you think it is a little laughable initially, it’s becuase they can’t deliver as a business. Food appetizers were greasy nasty, the food very mediocre, and the bottle beer not that fresh. Combine that with Atlanta’s smoking allowances, and man, this was a dinner/beer outing that was a pleasure to end.

smoky, busy, crowded, loud, all that. lot of beer but how can you even enjoy it?
I did not have the same experience at the Vortex that most everyone else did. I was there for part of my bachelor party, and first off, they were either out of or don’t carry the first 5 beers I tried to order.. #s 8 and 9 too. The food looked good and everyone else liked theirs, but my burger was cold and bloody, even after I sent it back. The atmosphere was cool, and from where we were sitting, we had a good view of the queue for the gay bar across the street.. which at times was entertaining. I will re-rate if I make it back, as it appears to be better than my experience there.
