Visited on a Saturday lunchtime so quite busy but the place is large and we could score a table. Decent selection of regional cask ales and cask ciders, the keg list is macro Eurolagers. Food is good price and above average for a pub. The atmosphere inside is very cozy and the place looks original and traditional, with a nice patio outside to enjoy the sun, if any. Overall, not a beer destination by any stretch of the imagination, but a more than enjoyable spot for a quick bite and a pint
A good place to head to for a beer in Oxford - if you can find it! Its a very interesting layout, and very busy when we visited late on a Saturday afternoon. The beer selection at first appears good, but actually the offered beers are a bit so-so. Still, at least there is a choice beyond Greene Kingís usually array. Iíll probably come here again when next in Oxford.
Donít be off put by the fact itís a Greene king pub... And Itís well worth the five minutes of additional time spent trying to find this place! Quality and selection of ale is ok, not the cheapest but itís in oxford so what can you expect!? Food was excellent and well worth a visit for that alone.
I couldnít write a better review than the one of Chriso ! I had exactly the same experience over the years .. I really donít like green king and their policy .. That said the Turf still worth a visit for the interior and itís history ..
From notes from a visit in 2012 but have visited many times over the years. Iím a bit of a sucker for pubs that are tucked away down alleyways and this is one such. Used to be really atmospheric and hard to find when I first visited years ago but itís now a Greene King pub so, although it still has a historic feel the ambience is much more corporate than it once was. Itís been extended over the years and thereís now a big patio which seemed to be largely populated by diners on a brief lunchtime visit. The beer range isnít just Greene King standards but not too exciting. There are a couple of house beers that may be rebadges. Service was very slow, mainly because the bar staff were largely occupied with taking food orders from the aforementioned large numbers of diners, which seemed to involve a high degree of faffing around. If youíve never been to Oxford before you should definitey take a quick look but itís not what it was.
Visited this place 23/10-11, with great beerfriends.
This very old town pub is a visit worth for the pub it self. It can be very difficult to find, but if you see a pink hotel, you are very close ;-)
Being a Green King Pub thats what mostly get there but they have a few guests as well..
