Excellent Pub, the only place I know sells Citra on draught regularly. They don’t serve food but they will provide plates, knife and fork if you want to order in. My favourite Pub in Birmingham for good beer.

Great pub on the city centre with a wide range of beer from every corner of England and further .. Top condition of the ales on tap and a very good service ! This pub really worth a visit for selection, atmosphere , service and quality .. On plus I can add the honesty of the staff that kept aside my iPhone when I left it on the bar and got out .. Thanks again !

Another top pub in Birmingham. Good to see it is still going strong. Large selection of ales and I love the way they supply plates and cutlery for you to bring a take away to eat in! A place to rub shoulders with brewers and fellow beer geeks.

Amazing. Great pub. Great atmosphere. Live screens showing what’s on cask. Mixture of old and young people. Proper real pub. I love it.

This has been an institution in the Birmingham Real Ale scene since it started up a few years back. It’s set in a great position between Victoria Square and the Commercial area. There is always a lot of choice, although the usuals are building up now, so the changing beers have become a little less. No food is served, but you are free to bring in your own. The place is generally pretty full at most times of day and seating can be difficult to sort out. The Bar is also pretty packed at times, although the electronic board helps in choosing the beers.
Updated Rating Dec ’12. A bit of an improvement in here, the carpets have been cleaned, it’s had an air through and the beer quality seems to be better. An improved mark from me and is now my new favourite in Birmingham.
Update Dec ’13. The beer quality is definitely top notch now and the ambiance much improved. It remains our favourite venue in Brum for 2013/14.

City centre boozer. 16 cask ales, 3 ciders. Ales come from far and wide as well as the Black Country range & other West Midlands breweries. Should be beer heaven, but atmosphere is a little bit lacking.

What can I say about this magnificent institution that hasn’t been said before? An extensive list of ever changing, top-quality real ale and ciders, a spot-on atmosphere of no music and good conversation, and a knowledgable staff with a passion for beer. This truly is a real-ale utopia, and now that they have the roof-top terrace the drinker even has more space to enjoy their tipple. The only downside to The Wellington is that it’s so dependably brilliant that if you’re a Brummie like me it demotivates you from going anywhere else and you have to drag yourself away!

Big cask list, lots of variation, but I kinda felt they stretched themselves thin with so many casks and the condition suffered a bit. Nice patio if you aren’t too offended by smoke. Staff ranged from average to Not very bright, though all were friendly. Decent place, but Post Office is a step above this.

Visited as the last port of call before the train home on the RB Black Country Bus Bash - 06/07/13. Central location and about a 5 minute dash to New St station. The place smelt of paint fumes on our visit following a refurb, a minor grumble peculiar to our visit but obviously can’t be helped. Old meets new in terms of 16 ever changing cask lines and all beers displayed on TV screens. There were around 13 on during our visit, largely midland based micros. Black Country Ales always feature as regulars. The pub itself was fairly long and narrow with a patio to the rear. Service was very good for what was a vibrant city centre pub, banter on offer from the youngish bar staff and they were prompt in serving and keeping waiting time down. Live music was setting up but thankfully we were leaving before Lonny Donegan and his mates got going. If you’re going to put music on keep it to a venue with multiple rooms so sanctuary can be found - please! Great pub, good range, top service.

Based on the reviews from the London crew I stopped in here while visiting Birmingham. If not for the need to get home I could have stayed all night. With about 14 beers at any given time there is something for everyone. Rather than just dull milds the selection includes a mixture of locals and breweries like Oakham, Tring, and even a few German handles in case you want something with an international flair.

Prices were pretty much in line with the average pub. There are not any real bargains to be had but at the same time you are not paying £4.00 except perhaps on the highest gravity offerings.

Final stop during the RateBeer Black Country Bash, and easily one of the best. After about ten hours of fairly aggressive drinking I wasn’t exactly in the mood for more beer, but the Oakham Citra Special on cask here was absolutely stunning. I could have continued drinking that beer well into the night - it was just that good and drinkable. Aside from that beer, the Wellington is a nice place. It smelled like they had recently put down a fresh layer of paint; kind of a double-edged sword, that. The staff was quick and friendly. Plenty of seating. Live music on the Saturday evening we were there. Good value beers. Plenty of interesting styles of beer available. I would imagine this place is a highlight of the Birmingham beer scene.
