Based on the reviews from the London crew I stopped in here while visiting Birmingham. If not for the need to get home I could have stayed all night. With about 14 beers at any given time there is something for everyone. Rather than just dull milds the selection includes a mixture of locals and breweries like Oakham, Tring, and even a few German handles in case you want something with an international flair.

Prices were pretty much in line with the average pub. There are not any real bargains to be had but at the same time you are not paying £4.00 except perhaps on the highest gravity offerings.

Final stop during the RateBeer Black Country Bash, and easily one of the best. After about ten hours of fairly aggressive drinking I wasnít exactly in the mood for more beer, but the Oakham Citra Special on cask here was absolutely stunning. I could have continued drinking that beer well into the night - it was just that good and drinkable. Aside from that beer, the Wellington is a nice place. It smelled like they had recently put down a fresh layer of paint; kind of a double-edged sword, that. The staff was quick and friendly. Plenty of seating. Live music on the Saturday evening we were there. Good value beers. Plenty of interesting styles of beer available. I would imagine this place is a highlight of the Birmingham beer scene.

This large pub in the city centre is known for its extensive beer range, which includes lots of local and regional brews. There are 16 hand pumps listed on television screens around the downstairs rooms and they are constantly updated. Itís worth looking upstairs too as the bar there had two additional beers on draught when we visited. The pub is partly owned by the people who own the Craven Arms and in my view the latter is nicer Ė more cosy and friendly, whilst the Wellington can get very crowded. Itís rather hotel-like but it does have a nice roof terrace and itís handy to know that you can also access the Old Joint Stock via the back alley. When we visited it had been newly decorated and unfortunately the smell of paint was overwhelming. (Last visited 6 July 2013).

Big open airy place in the middle of Brum. Service was quick and the beers in good condition. The atmosphere was a bit cool and clinical and there was a whiff of paint fumes which didnít help but overall it is definitely worth a visit.

Visted during the Ratebeer Black Country Bash. Awesome spot right in the middle of Birmingham city centre. Nicely modernized space that unusually for England features air conditioning. Something like 12 beers featured on cask including the superlative Oakham Citra Special. Service was prompt. Prices reflected the central location. Overall, a must-visit if youíre traveling though the area.

One of the best places in Birmingham for a real ale.
Lovely old traditional british pub.
Friendly and nice staff.
Good selection both on tap and bottles.
A big screen tells you what beer they have available.

Visited several times, and for sure worth a go if you are in or close to Birmingham. Just love their black board, which get updated as soon as they put on a new beer, both in the pub and on the net :-) It was the first place, I noticed used this, years ago. Friendly staff, great variation on the beers, often very crowded, but very cosy..

Easily the best place for real ale, in fact its bar sports very little else out front, although alternatives are available behind. Itís very popular at the weekend so expect to stand, especially as food is an option here as well. Located in the heart of the city center it is an easy stop on a pub crawl of several of Birminghamís best listed ale bars. The decor is a little ordinary.

Probably the premier real ale pub in Birmingham. They have up to 26 regularly rotating taps and a small but decent selection of mainly Belgian bottled beers. Many of their cask ales are from small local breweries and as part of the Black Country chain, they feature a few BCA ales too. The place is rather spacious but finding a seat isnít easy due to its popularity. The staff are friendly and helpful! If you are in Birmingham, you must visit The Welly!

Lots of handpumps, so many choises so little time. No music and T.V., but you can chat over things and beer with other guest or staff. Very nice place to go.
