Had dinner upstairs. Food was good. We were served by at least five different people. Huge amount of staff on Tuesday evening. Went to toilet downstairs and noticed taproom side which had kind of dive bar feeling. Large tap list, had a flight. I think they do flights only till 7pm. Some of the beers are very good.
Came here on 5.3.2018. Very nice red brick building, high ceiling, very professional dark interior and merchandising shop. Brewery is downstairs with an additional bar attached. 9 beers from their main range and 4 beers from their sour beer range on tap. I had a Pernicious (IPA), which was ok. Overall a good place but not outstanding. The overall score of 99 is misleading.
Visited a couple times on vacation. Draft selection was extremely large. Probably about 20-25 of their beers between the upstairs and downstairs bars. Flagships and one offs. Flights were not offered as they cut them off at a certain time, regardless of how busy they are. I found that slightly annoying. Bartendress downstairs was very informative and the best, while the servers I had upstairs were slow and forgetful. Bottles and cans for sale in a gift shop. Food, when it finally did come, was very good. I’d return, but not if I was in a rush or on a time schedule.

There is no denying that a plethora of beers can be found here, and that’s sure to please most RateBeerians. If adjunct-laden underattenuated Belgian-style ales masquerading as "saisons" are your thing, or novelty Americanized sour beers or innumerable variations of brutishly hopped IPAs are what you’re after, then you will very likely find your nirvana here.
To be fair, despite many of the (mediocre) German styles that are brewed here, they do not come with any bells and whistles, which is nice. And I will certainly give praise where it is due, so whomever is in charge of the Czech pils and Zwicklbier deserves a pat on the back, because they are well-constructed, very cleanly brewed and sincere renditions that feature noble hops and aren’t dry-hopped. Same goes for two of the (bottled and seasonal) Belgian goldens "Lunatic" and"Bedeviled", which are clean, well-attenuated and nicely balanced (particularly Bedeviled!) and feature noble hops and pilsner malt. But this brewery has yet to show me that it can produce a number of ordinary styles well. For example, if they brew a porter, they’ll do what most breweries are doing and throw an unnecessary twist on it like adding chiles or cacao nibs or serving it with nitrogen, and/or ramp up the alcohol to appease the BEER BRO crowd, which is rampant in Asheville. 7% for a robust porter? Gimme a 5% chocolate malt bomb and I’d be all over it. And bottle-condition that puppy, too, please. Most of the Belgian ales here are not only spiced and sloppily assembled, but most of them are above 7%, which makes this Wicked Weed a less than ideal place to enjoy a session.
So, yeah, if novelty beer (and ticking) is your thing, then welcome to heaven. But if you’re looking for soulful beer that’s a joy to quaff, this isn’t your place. While it’s definitely the best brewpub in Asheville with the nicest atmosphere and food menu (I have never eaten here), that’s not really saying a whole lot in a town that thrives on mediocrity (at best).
Very cool place with really interesting tap-list. Service was good. There are no flights after 7pm, which I find is a total pain in the arse but you are free to try anything, which almost (but not quite) makes up for that. I would rate everything that I tasted as above average at least and some stuff was really good. My faves were the Iron Lady black IPA and the Barrel Aged Milk and Cookies imperial stout, both of which were top notch. No idea about the food, as I was here for the beer only. Prices were OK. Definitely on the must-visit list for Asheville.
Pretty sweet place - seems a bit expensive, but really good beer and food. The wifi wasn’t working for some reason. I was surprised there wasn’t more funky stuff on tap - I thought that was the thing about this brewery.
Visited on a weekday at lunchtime with the family. I assume it’s a different vibe at night, but this was a lunch work crowd with a smattering of families. Food was solid - I had a pork belly sandwich and delicious blue cheese cole slaw. Got a sampler with mostly ipa’s and pales - they only had a few sours on and none of the big ones. Cool place, but it’s all relative - I would live in the Funkatorium if I was from these parts.
Really hip brew pub. It does get really packed at peak times, but the value of the brews is great! You can rarely find sours for what they charge at this place. Seating is a mixture of indoor, upstairs, down stairs, and outside. Try catching a show at the Orange Peel next door after a few beers at the pub. :)
