Locals will always refer to this joint as Jimmy’s (the name of the Woodlawn Tap’s original proprietor). Not many places to drink in Hyde Park, but let’s be honest, U of C students aren’t a big drinking crowd (this is, after all, a school for future powerbrokers, not party animals). That being said, it is a laid back joint that may be the closest thing to a feeling of ’neighborhood’ that you’ll find in this anomaly of an intellectual enclave not really found anywhere else in this city. Average beer selection, but good burgers and the only place in town where heady discussions of Rousseau and Locke take precedence over those of the Hawks and Bears. Yeah, I might be a nerd but this place is still one of my favorite places to have a pint and I’ve fond memories of it.

This is your typical neighborhood dive bar. There isn’t really anything special about it but it attracts a nice crowd of students. Selection is pretty mediocre. They usually have about 10 beers or so on tap and none of them are of high quality. It’s a shame that they never seem to have any Goose Island on tap, because that would be pretty good bang for your buck. A pitcher of a lower quality beer will run you something like $9, which is pretty fair I guess. Unfortunately they only take cash here, which I find pretty disappointing as someone who prefers to use plastic. Service here seems pretty attentive. I haven’t tried the food, but it looks like your typical bar food, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing at 1 AM when nothing else in the area is open.

A dive bar near the University of Chicago campus in Hyde Park. They have your average selection of beers on tap with some extras in bottle. It seems like the going rate for a bottle of any beer is 4.50. The food is better than average but is still your typical bar food.
