This IS my go-to place in madison for beer. Whenever im back home in northern IL, i always make a tip up here to stock up on good beers to bring back to NM. I have been going here for many years. the beer selection is huge! prices are great. not much in terms of service (nobody around to help out-pretty much serve yourself) however, you cant beat the prices here.
Several visits from the late 90s through the mid 00s - today was my first time in at least 6-7 years. Typical Woodmans, only a bit larger than most if not all of the others except perhaps the Kenosha location. Might be the largest selection of Wisconsin micros I’ve seen in one location, and prices among the best you’ll see. One weird and slightly irritating note: while they have lots of singles, they’re grouped in several distinctive (and non-swappable) areas, i.e. you can’t get a mix of New Glarus and Capital singles as they’re separated. Not a big deal to me, but worth noting.
Typical Woodman’s- a nice beer selection. A decent amount of Wisconsin beers that I don’t see in my local watering holes. New Glarus fruit beers were actually cheaper here than at the brewery. Friendly help on a Saturday afternoon. Best thing about Woodman’s (besides the beer) Bucky Badger Cheese popcorn.
As grocery stores go the selection at Woodman’s rivals an average liquor store. Places like Chuck’s might have an edge but for price Woodman’s cannot be beat for regular beers from the likes of Lake Louie, New Glarus, and Ale Asylum.
The beer takes up about two to three rows and ranges from the local to Belgian, British, and beyond. Very rarely will you find a limited release but for stocking up on the latest Thumbprint or a case of Belgian Red Woodman’s is the place to start.
The rest of the store is given over to other liquors and wine if you want to do additional shopping. I don’t spend much time on that end of the store however so I cannot tell you much about it.
Grocery store liquor shop. Food was in the grocery store... very large selection of locals and domestics. Not a ton of the hard to get imports. Asked about some rare beers and was surprised with a little gift barrel aged from CA. People could barely understand what beer you were talking about though. decent prices.
This place has the largest selection in Madison by far. Also, by far the cheapest. Sometimes much much cheaper. However, it is kind of dumpy, with many undesirable people. But, since the place is so cheap with such a selection, can’t help by go here most of the time for beer.
From june 22, 2008, was ported over to the wrong Woodmans. Gammon Road location. As with every woodman’s I’ve been to, huge liquor store with plenty of beer to go around. A smattering of beers were available for a build your own six pack (in the cooler) for $9. Plenty of Wisconsin breweries carried here, including a few I can’t find at my local Woodman’s (Oak Creek) like Fauerbach, Falls and Viking. Nothing special here in terms of service, just a big selection of beer at decent prices.
