Almost certainly the best bottle shop in town. I’m actually kind of surprised by some of the scores here...

It’s not a terribly big store, but they have a lot of great stuff here. Certainly plenty of local offerings from Portland (Maine in general) and throughout New England. They also had a lot of nice imports, cool stuff from De La Senne, Omnipollo, To Ol, etc. Decent selection of ciders (tons of Eden stuff).

Prices here were pretty fair. The two gentlemen working when we visited were quite friendly and helpful. They had some interesting and harder to find offerings.

One odd policy thing (and it’s not unique to this store): I asked if they would split four/six-packs into singles. They said typically yes, but not on the rarer stuff. Bars do this all the time too. No tasters or half pours or whatever of that special beer, full pints only. Oh well, first world problem there.

If you only visit one shop in Portland, would definitely recommend this one.

Located near a Hannaford supermarket not far from the Great Old Bear. small parking lot but not very busy when I visited. More focused on European craft with some solid regional and local craft. Prices are decent compared to what I’ve seen. I didn’t interact much with the clerk but he seemed cordial helping out a couple of other customers. I would go there if I was local and looking for that new Mikkeller and Evil Twin.

Visited in August 2014 at 5 or 6PM. Easy-to-reach store near the R295. The guy at the cashier didn’t say hi and barely look at me. I was alone with my gf in the store and he never asked me if I needed help during the 20 min i was there. The only time he spoke to me was to ask me if I wanted a box for my bottles after seeing my credit card. I haven’t ever received such a poor service in a specialized beer store. Ok, beer selection... At least it was nice. Selection is a mix of american and import beers. Not a lot of local stuff. I found some beers I didn’t see elsewhere. The store himself is sharp and clean, bottles are well placed, large aisles. Despite the service, it was a good pit stop on my last day in Portland.

Decent sized store, almost everything warm and in the sun. Indifferent service, i ended up not buying anything and buying it all at whole foods.

Bier Cellar is the best bottle shop in the Portland area. We swung past after driving out to Allagash & Bissell, which made sense. Inside it is actually quite small, but they have managed to pack it full of quality beer. A good range covering: Maine, New England, national and particularly international stuff. Everything is laid out well and is easy to navigate. The guy working there was knowledgeable and chatty. The only bad point is that they can’t keep any of the best local stuff (Bissell, Foundation etc) in stock due to popularity! But it can’t be helped. Prices seemed pretty decent actually. A solid establishment.

Reminds me of WLV in Chicago, because the main focus of this store is obsecure Euro ticks you won’t find elsewhere. Clean space, and I like how the beers are arranged. Price is a bit much. Lighter focus on the locals than I would like. Cashier made some odd personal comments. Probably a spot for locals only not a destination.

This is a fun beer shop to peruse the fantastic selection and grab some bottles to go. Easy to navigate as the aisles are well layed out and the bottles are clearly marked. And it’s not just beer here but also a nice cider and mead range. I only chatted briefly with the cashier but friendly guy. Definitely get here if looking to stock up before leaving Maine.

I’ve stopped in here a few times because it is convenient off 295 in Portland. My most recent trip was last week on the way up to Augusta for work. Great selection of Maine brewed beers. Banded horn, Marshall’s wharf, Funky Bow, Maine Beer, Baxter, etc Nice selection imports as well as domestics with easily 500 labels in house. Some wine and mead as well as a section for cider. It was a late Sunday afternoon and the guy behind the counter was helpful and seemed knowledgeable. I managed to find a dozen or so new beers to try without much trouble. Pricing seemed a bit higher than I’m used to, but could be a Portland thing. I wouldn’t hesitate stopping in next time I’m in the area.

Visited on a Sunday afternoon. Nice little shop, clean and well organized. The selection is good, not huge but with plenty of good choices and no rotten beer. Some highlights include very fresh Maine Beer Co beers, Cidre Dupont, lots of Prairie and some good Mikkellers. Staff was helpful and knowledgeable about beer. Prices were reasonable without being cheap. Good place to fill up on some beers before heading home.

Setup like a high end wine store. Very clean, wood shelves 3 high, description of each beer on an index card on the shelves. The owner was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. We talked a lot about beer styles and distribution - very helpful. To compliment the bottles they also have some glassware from local breweries and books about beer. Craft brewery signs decorate the walls. The selection is kind of small but mainly top tier beers and breweries organized by country. -- Definitely worth stopping here if you are in Portland.
