Modern tap room in city centre. Real ale / craft beer is served in the bar on second floor and there is a seperate bar serving continental lagers on the first floor. Only visited ale part. Taps were split approx. 50/50 between own beers and guests. The beer that I had (Wheat & Juniper was OK but nothing special.

This place was a totally unexpected pleasant surprise. I bumped into it while trying to head across Wakefield from the Hepworth Gallery to the train station. Fernandes is a two-level establishment. The top floor is a traditional-style brewpub. The interior is lovely, rustic. The ceiling beams are exposed, there’s plenty of nooks to sit in. There’s about 12 beers on cask, many from Fernandes’ own in-house brewery. Other local micros featured. The barman was fantastic, very friendly and happy to give samples. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to visit the downstairs bier keller. It’s allegedly a foreign beer bar that offers German and Belgian brews. The hours of the keller are more limited than the upstairs brewpub. As I don’t know exactly what’s offered downstairs, the actual number of taps and bottles currently listed may be short-changing this place. Overall, this place is a real gem. Too bad it’s tucked away in a town I’m unlikely to visit again soon!
