Blue Heron Paint The Town Brown Ale
Reviewed from notes. The appearance was a semi-dark copper color with a finger’s worth of off white foamy head that slid off and formed some spotty lace. The aroma had some toast, roasted nuts, floral and piney hops and some earthiness at the end. The flavor moderately blended the sweet to the roast with the bitterness of the hops making a decent play in the overall scheme of the balance of things. Fairly nice aftertaste of the stated aromas. Finish was somewhat sweet. The palate was about medium bodied with a decent sessionability about it. Decent carbonation. ABV felt fine. Overall, pretty good brown I wish I could get again.

Blue Heron Irish Red Ale
Reviewed from notes. The appearance was a semi-dark copper color with an off white foamy head that slowly dissolved. Spider web lace. The aroma had a clean sweet caramel/toffee malt, some cherry sweetness, floral hop character and a little bit of earthy/herbal hoppiness. The flavor was moderately sweet with a little bit of red delicious apple coming in for a decent blend. Aftertaste was semi-sweet along with the finish. The palate was between light and medium bodied with a pretty good sessionability about it. Carbonation felt fine. ABV felt fine. Good smoothness along my tongue. Overall, I think I liked this one for me as it really wasn’t much of an Irish red. Sure is different if anything.

Blue Heron Cheeky Brown Ale
Reviewed from notes. The appearance was a sturdy thick brown color with a finger’s worth of white foamy head that fell off at a good pace. Light stringy lace. The aroma had a good blend of toast, caramel/toffee malts, light nuts, little bit of cocoa powder. Ends with some grassy hops. The flavor leaned towards the sweetness of the previously mentioned aromas. Mild aftertaste of the malts. Sly toasty finish. The feel was between light and medium on the body with a fair sessionability about it. ABV felt as projected and the carbonation felt good as well. Overall, pretty good brown ale worthy of more pours if I could get it.

Blue Heron Engagement ESB
Draft. Dark amber/brown pour. Super fruity in the smell and flavor. Fruity hops are abundant, some berry notes, malt comes in as it warms. Not a typical esb, more like a hoppy amber ale of some sort but decent.

Said it was 11 percent at the brewery. Complete sugar bomb. Still has some nice yeasty notes, but no subtlety. Not on par with a Belgian Ale in any way. Homebrew. OK.

Tap at BH. Big fruity English Ale yeast tastes. Has a true-ish English feel, at least unique from the other beers on the menu. A little zesty and in your face though, lacks much subtlety. Pretty standard offering at the end of the day. OK.

Blue Heron Brandy Oaked Black Belgian Wheat
On tap at the GTMW 2013
The line at Blue Heron was pretty short and low key so during a lull I stopped by to see what was going on. This is an interesting experiment that almost works. That said I would no issues ordering a pint if I were ever in the vicinity.

Aroma / Appearance - The rich black base is sticky with sheer legs which is amazing for a 6% beer. Brandy, cola, and wheat mix sweetness and malts. The wit aspects feels as if they’ve been taken over by the French oak.

Flavor / Palate - Wheat and malt drive a strong first impression. The brandy emerges within a minute or so. The result tastes more like a mixed drink than a beer. Perhaps this should have been one of the Kuhnhenn Carnivale taps.

Blue Heron Stormy’s Revenge IPA
Draft at brewpub. Hoppy aroma. Amber body with little to no head and no visible carbonation. Leaves good lace, however. Hops are balanced with a considerable malt backbone. Some pepper. A little bit of harshness on the finish, but not in a bad way. Very tasty. Gets a little sloppy as it warms, but a very good effort overall.

Some citrus or grapefruit flavor. Pretty dry finish. Carbonation seemed a bt high. Overall, thought it was good tasting, better than average. A little bit if breadlines, some yeast flavor.

Blue Heron Stranger In The Dark
On tap at GTMW. Poured deep brown with a dark creamy beige head. The aroma picked up sweet vanilla and chocolate with a nice, soft feel to it. The flavor found toasty chocolate and black malts at the core, with some malt-inspired sourness on the edges.. became a little sharp on the finish. Medium-bodied with higher, filling carbonation on the palate.. good except for some odd sourness.

Blue Heron Possibly Wobbly
On tap at GTMW. Poured murky peach with an easily-resuscitated beige head. The aroma was decidedly warm and English-inspired, with toffee and bready malts leading.. spicy fruits, black pepper, and a hit of clove around.. warm and welcoming. The flavor found warm toffee malt at the core, with caramel showing as the drink progressed.. fruity bitterness and peppery alcohol through the otherwise sweet, warm finish. Medium-plus bodied with just the right amount of carbonation on the palate.. very good stuff!

Pours a dark cola brown colored porter with some dark copper highlights and a fast dissipating off-white head that leaves behind minimal lacing. Aroma of toasted dark malts, a hint of dry English-style hops, molasses, and some vanilla. Flavor is medium bodied, very little bourbon presence but plenty of toasted dark malt and vanilla flavors. Finish is quite smooth, nice balanced toasted dark malt, chocolate, vanilla and a touch of dry hops. The bourbon oak aging really balanced out the flavors compared to the base Pandemonium Porter.

On draught at the Blue Heron brewpub in Marshfield, Wisconsin. Pours a clear copper amber colored ale with a thin off-white head that quickly dissipates and leaves behind some spotty lacing. Aroma of multi-grain malt, mostly rye profile, a hint of crystal and citrus zest and a touch of floral hops. Taste is medium bodied, average carbonation with flavors of multi-grain malt with plenty of rye, toasted biscuit and a hint of toffee. Finish is semi-dry, mild bitterness with a balanced aftertaste of a crisp bitterness and rye bread flavors. Though one of the highest concentrated rye malt I’ve ever encountered, this one was very decent.

Blue Heron Grapefruit IPA
Sampled on draught at the GTMW 2011 in Madison, Wisconsin. Pours a semi hazy orangish-amber colored IPA with an average sized off-white head that has some nice retention. Aroma of citrus zest, grapefruit, and more citrusy hops to shake a stick at. Taste is medium to full bodied, intense grapefruit and grapefruit zest that over-powers the multi-grain malt flavors. Finish is both tart and citrusy, leaded with grapefruit presence that made we wonder if this could be the next breakfast drink to replace my morning grapefruit juice. Would love to try this one again.
