Sambrooks Imperial Stout
Pitch black, big tan head and sticky lacing. Aroma is roasty, dark fruits, caramel. Taste gets deeper with the addition of coffee, chocolate, nuts, licorice and booze. Medium body, slick feel, soft carbonation, bitter finish. Overall, a decent stout, quite tasty and complex, easy to drink beside its ABV.

Sambrooks Battersea IPA
Hazy golden/amber, medium fluffy head, some spotty lacing. Aroma is very fruity, with strong caramel. Taste doesn’t get much more, but it’s an allright ale, quite malty, with caramel, nuts, grass, citrus, very bitter. Medium body, thin feel, lively carbonation, bitter finish. Not bad.

Cask conditioned at a Wetherspoons. Amber with cream head. There is a cereal malty sweetness to this, quite plummy fruity with a caramel, toffee’d background. The sweetness lingers. It’s fine.

Sambrooks Session
Handpull cask at the Seven Stars, Carey Street, London. Straw, clear with soap-bubble white head. Big grapefruit aroma with some sweet pineapple juice, applesauce and browned toast. Bittersweet hoppy taste, more grapefruit on the way down. Long citrus aftertaste. It’s not complex but what it does, it does well. A refreshing hoppy pale at a very sessionable strength. Good one Sambrooks.

Sambrooks Battersea Rye
Cask at The Green Dragon, Leek (JDW) A clear deep amber colour with a medium off white head. Aroma of nuts, some brown bread, slight red berries, a little apple and subtle spicy, earthy hops. Taste of nuts, brown bread, some caramel, slight red berries, a little apple, a hint of sugar and subtle spicy, earthy hops. Light to medium bodied with a soft carbonation. A soft, slightly sweet, earthy hop bitterness in the finish. What is it with Sambrooks beer which make it so sweet! This has got a soft, earthy bitterness in the finish but overall it’s a low quality rye beer. Easy drinking and smooth but meh.

Sambrooks Powerhouse Porter
You wouldn’t call this distinctive but it pretty much ticks all the boxes. Dark but not opaque with a decent thick head and a restrained flavour of slightly overdone toast, it is a typical London porter and none the worse for that. Recommended but so are many others.

The aroma is quite sweet, sugary, cola, boiled sweets and fruit cake The taste is drying, woody, leather, cheap cola, treacle, bit of dried fruits, chewy malt and damp leaves with sweetish, sticky finish. Medium body and soft carbonation. A bit muddled and chewy. OK, but I would rush back for another.

Sambrooks Session
April 2016? Cask hand pull back at the Red Lion, Walsgrave, Coventry where Raish got gay-bashed for dancing to Apache Indian all those years ago. Raish wasn’t gay but it was that kind of place; (suspected) gays, grebos, longhairs, students shaking the rag week tin- all were liable to be threatened with an affectionate knife blade between the shoulder blades on the streets of Coventry back when. This is exactly the kind of beer I want to sit in a pub garden and drink all day on one of those rare early summer/late spring sunny days we occasionally get in England. Heaped foaming gold with a vague dust of sediment. Aroma of dry conifer needles and orange. Juicy dunked biscuit, baked bread, tangerine and old dried rosemary herbal hop taste. Perfect nick. Soft and alluring. In that lovely gap between lager and GA. Not an explosion of garish citrus but harshly underrated.

Handpull cask from the Crown & Shuttle, Shoreditch. Reddish brown, translucent and without much head. Redcurrant, crystal malt with some vegetal herby cressy notes that some poorly put-together beers have. Malty and slightly sour taste. Long medicinal finish. Ugh.

Sambrooks Scrumdown
Cask half-pint on 14th Feb 2017 in ’Knowles of Norwood. Red hue to the dark brown body, the head a beige affair that hung around (like on a hookers shoulder). Malty aroma and taste, maybe a handful of Rye thrown into the kettle? Starts like it’s going to be fairly sweet, then tails off to a semi-bitter finish. Not the best Sambrooks beer I have had. Something not quite right about it.

Cask at the George IV. Not sure in what way this is a stout, it’s dark red-brown with a thin head and I’d have guessed more at an old ale or ESB. Light choc aromas plus a hint of fruity malt. More cocoa notes on the palate plus a bit of roasted malt, over a lightly bitter-sweet body with a hint of fruitcake. Bitter and light roasty notes linger in the aftertaste.
