Bottle @ Gastropub Kleipeda, Kiev. Hazy rich yellow with medium sized foamy off-white head, doughy aroma, low carbonation, sweetish malty taste, full body, abrupt finish with malt aftertaste. Quite nice.

Kolor: bursztynowy z niewielkim pomara?czowym odcieniem, m?tny. Piana ?redniej wielko?ci, drobno p?cherzykowa, bia?a. Nie jest zbyt trwala. Aromat s?odowy, karmelowy, wyczuwalne dro?d?e i nieco alkohol.

Wheat yellow unfiltered beer with small white foam. Aroma of, malt and yeast, in a way reminds traditional Lithuanian farm house ale. Taste quite light and easy to drink. Has notes of yeast and pale malt to it. Over all nice refreshing beer

Kurklių I.O. Boiko
Bottle. Unclear pale brown body. Almost no head. Heavy malty nutty aroma. Hints of citrus. Very bitter flavour, almost harsh, sourish, yeasty. An interesting experience, but I have had better Lithuanian beers. Thanks to Finn for sharing the bottle. (At home, 12.09.2014)

Hiivainen vehnäinen tuoksu, pirteän hapokas suutuntuma, kuohuva ja samea, vehnäoluen tyypillinen maku, jättää raikkaan hiilihappoisen kirpeyden jälkeensä. Piristävä löytö.

Kurklių I.O. Boiko
0.5 bottle. Very hazy, dark orange/light brown color and no head to speak of. Sweet aroma not surprisingly composed mostly of rye, honey, and bread. Taste is very sweet as well and also marked by the presence of rye and honey, pretty simple but pleasant. Light body, thin texture, and soft carbonation. Finish is medium long at most and is a diluted version of the taste. Overall the beer has an interesting and enjoyable taste but it is watery and lacks a proper palate.

Piwo żytnie, bardzo cienkie, wręcz wodniste. Żyto wniosło bursztynowy kolor i zmętnienie, plus lekki posmak ziemisty. Cała reszta pozostaje eurolagerem. Słabo, acz pijalnie.

butelka 1l. Fajne piwko, świeże, smaczne i zdrowe :). jednak oceniam je trochę niżej od innych litewskich niepasteryzowanych niefiltrowanych piw z kótkim okresem przydatności i reżimem przechowywania w niskiej temperaturze choć i tak warte polecenia.

Pop top bottle. Pours hazy orange with a small white head that dissipates quick. The aroma has some rye bread, honey, grapes. The taste has some sweet fruit, spicy rye, funky finish.. Nearly a wild yeast finish.

Cloudy amber beer. Palate is fairly dry and crispy. Mildly spicy malt with a subtle banana ester. Unfortunately also soapy things. Minerals and subtle citrus. Finishes crisp. The soap really detracts.

Bottle (at Bambalyne). Head is initially small, frothy, white, mostly lasting. Body is dark yellow to light amber. Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (toasted grain, cereal), lightly to moderately hoppy (flowers, herbs), with notes of lemon taffy, gum, kumquat. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, moderately bitter, slightly raw/husky. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. This would prove to be the last drinkable beer of the trip to Vilnius...from here things went tragically downhill as beer after beer at bar after bar would be nothing but glassfuls of sadness. This particular beer started off better than it finished, initially promising to be a halfway decent Belgian-ish golden ale, but as it warmed it devolved into a slightly saccharine and somewhat raw beverage that I could not finish my glass of. Perfectly fine if you drink it fast and cold without thinking too much about it, though, which is about as good as you can expect.

Kurklių I.O. Boiko
Smalls a bit unusual for a beer, but pleasant: bread and barnyard (straw). Pours orange, cloudy with minimal head that quickly disappears. Bitterness is low, but pleasant, beer is lightly sweet, with notes of black rye bread. Medium body, flat carbonation. Definitely not for hop-heads, but for me it’s really ok due to the unusual "countryside" aromas - not the best Lithuanian beer, but really decent. 50cl bottle.

Kurklių I.O. Boiko
Bottle at Bambalyne in Vilnius, best by August 2013.
Hazed golden orange body.
Tall-building white head collapses into a ring.
The best-looking beer of this Lithuanian visit.
Similar in appearance and aroma to some type of Belgian farmhouse golden ale.
And it actually smells quite nice: wheat, pale grains, tropical fruit, wax, spicy phenols.
Juicy / pulpy / semi-sweet orange approach.
Sharp, bracingly dry finish is thin / airy / marshmallow-y.
No strong flaws, very interesting and fun to smell and taste.
All flavors and aromas are very expressive.
Low acid / low bitterness / low sugar.
Very effervescent.

Dry earthy fruity mealy aftertaste with orangey papery notes. Decent, but a bit thin and harsh. (1l bottle, Bamb Alyne, Vilnius.)

Pours muddy pale, almost like urine with white cap on top almost like... Aroma also behave like genie - once you open a bottle at one moments it’s here at second - you see him from the back far away. I feel some freshly mowed lawn or rhubarb in aroma and nothing more. To me it is heavily sour, no sweetness nor bitterness, I even don’t feel hops at all. Certainly not my beer. Foam was only what pleased me.

Kurklių I.O. Boiko
Bottle. Small head, golden colour, pudding-like hazyness. Sweet aroma full of bready malt, very slightly toasted, toffee, flowers, honey notes, yeast and a subtle lemony tartness. There is also an interesting sharp note in here, maybe coming from the yeast, maybe from the rye. Soft and pleasant taste finished by a light bitterness. Yeasty and bready flavour with a nice aftertaste of wet wood. Another very good rural beer from Lithuania!

Piwo z żyta, niepasteryzowane i niefiltrowane. Bardzo świeże i pachnące zbożami. Mętne i to bardzo, nieprzejrzyste, a w odcieniu pomarańczowym. Jedyny minus to szybko znikająca piana.

Kurklių I.O. Boiko
In short: A dry blonde beer with a nice countryside farmhouse character. Excellent
How: Bottle 1L flip-top, consumed fresh the day of purchase from a bar in Lithuania, despite MartinT insisting that I don’t buy it
The look: Cloudy yellow-blonde topped by a small white head
In long: Nose has a strong presence of that typical barnyard Lithuanian farmhouse ales signature. The aroma also displays something what resemble sun dried wheat (although I was told it actually uses rye). Taste is more or less the same, countryside field, sundried wheat, rye-ish spiciness, lemon muffin, lemongrass, yellowed grass, spicy twist in the grassy and citric hops. Well carbonated (a rarity with Lithuanian countryside ales). Finish is rather dry. I could drink gallons of this beer. I’m a Saison-whore, I love attenuated session beers with a rustic/countryside character, so those Lithuanian farmhouse blonde beers are right up my alley, and this was one of the better one. I bought this bottle from the beer bar in Panevėžys to bring for our hotel tasting, none of us had ever heard about this beer and we were all very surprised by this fine beer, but not as surprised as my friends when I revealed to them that they are my secret admirers, they had no idea.

Bottle purchased from Rasputin Food and Wine, Ipswich, UK (sold as ’Ukrainian live beer’). On opening bottle, beer smelt off, poured a very cloudy orange, aroma OK on pouring. However taste was delighful and proved to be a most enjoyable, drinkable beer

(Rating #4246)

Kurklių I.O. Boiko

Kurklių I.O. Boiko
My Bottom Line:
Generous rye and spicy hops are completed by haystacks and banana esters in this compelling brew.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A creamy head of foam covers the cloudy pale blond.
-Hops also contribute mint-like freshness and wild coniferous angles. This is hoppier than the average Lithuanian traditional brew.
-The flavor profile and mouthfeel can be reminiscent of some Bière de Gardes, if you are looking for something to compare it to.
-The soft, fluffy effervescence makes this very drinkable.
-This is very drinkable if its idiosyncrasies don’t scare you.
-The herbal hop bitterness is leveled to the rest of the brew’s medium intensity.
-The aroma is a tantalizing experience. Definitely countryside, but not like any Saison or Bière de Garde I’ve ever had. The Lithuanians really do things differently and have their own, unique beer culture.

Really nice pour! Great head, dense mostly with a little froth. Incredibly bright gold color. Aroma of lemon, hay, lactic acid. Flavor was moderately sour, with a hint of bitterness almost to the clashing point. Pepper. No sweetness. Light bodied, very light in the mouth but not spritzy per se - even has a creamy element in the palate at first. Very drying beer.

Bottle, 5%. I thought it said J.O. Boiko. Citric aroma, hint of fruit. Very cloudy, milky orange colour. Small stable white head. The flavour is slightly sweet, there is some wheat to it. Not very spicy or anything, perhaps a hint of clove. Good full mouthfeel, but a little slimy.

1l bottle (Iki, Vilnius) (6:3:7:4:13=3.3)
Pale orange, cloudy, brief head. Initial wit-like aroma. Pleasant carbonation, crisp in the mouth. Banana-ey taste, but also loads of delicious tingly hop bite. Lovely noble hop finish.
Rerate: Bottle (?) (7:3:6:3:13=3.2) - similar to before. Respect for the quality. Then again, the guy’s a great brewer, I shouldn’t be surprised.
