Bottle from BFM brewery brought by Matt (thanks) - Color: clear dark brown amber beer with no carbonation and really small white foam. Smell: candied fruits, sourness and oak notes. Really well balanced. Alcohol finish. Taste: full body with amazing sourness attack, oak notes and candied fruits, candied grappes, and wine notes. Amazing attenuation. Wow. Aftertaste: astringent and sourness. Amazing. - no word.

BFM Abbaye de Saint Bon-Chien (2015)
Bottle sample @ Vini Birre Ribelli ’16.

Thank you for sharing Sebletitje & tderoeck! Sampled 750 ml. bottle @ Vini Birre Ribelli 2016. Dark amber, little head. This one came across more like an aged batch of Saint Bon-Chien as opposed to fresh batch, thinned out & nowhere as jammy as I am used from a fresh batch, very nice beer but not as glorious as the previous 4 batches were fresh for me. It looks even like an older batch, weird. I think that this one was a bit longer in the making than usual. Nose is mellow acidic vinegar, lemon, zest, red grape vinegar, lemon, sour oak, balsamic vinegar. Body is basic near flat rich acidic vinegar, sour oak, thinner than used from a fresh bottle of these, no jammy quality, rich vinegar, bit oak, puckering. Body is basic vinegar, acidic, almost no carbonation. Good but I expected more greatness to be honest.

375 ml. bottle sampled @ Vini Birre Ribelli 2016. Dark orange with no head. Nose is very sour, vinegar, sour, wood, more vinegar, dash nail polish, brutal. Taste is hugely acidic, very sour, vinegar, huge oak, fruit, oak, vinegar fruit, getting zero ginger, overall this is just highly delicious woody vinegar basically. Slick, thinner body, vinegar,… Calling this a Barley Wine feels almost like a joke, not only is this is sourer than any version of Saint Bon-Chien that I have ever had, this is one of the sourest beers I have ever had, this physically hurt to drink, it really burned in your throat, good but sadomasochistic to drink, not sure if even I could manage a bottle of this.

Bottle sample @ Vine Birre Ribelli ’16.

Bottle sample @ Vine Birre Ribelli ’16.

375 ml. bottle sampled @ Vini Birre Ribelli 2016. 2016 Vintage. Paler amber orange with no head. Nose is strangely sour, very harsh going to nail polish, vinegar, wine, glue, almost chemical sour. Taste is good, is sour oak wine, puckering, vinegar, acidic vinegar cherries, wine vinegar, crazily puckering sour, huge wood, vinegar. Thinned out body, vinegar, acidic, vinegar grapes. Great huge oak, vinegar oak taste, balsamic, very nice but stupidly sour as well.

375 ml. bottle sampled @ Vini Birre Ribelli 2016. 2015 Vintage. Hazy citrus golden, little off-white head. Nose is mellow milky, lactic, zest, mineral, easy, yeast dominates a bit. Taste is strange milky cornflakes, overly yeasty, strange, soggy cornflakes forward, some white sugar, lacks complexity, muddled yeast, not overly exiting, low grapes. Body is milky, yeast, cornflakes. Not very exciting, definitely expected more from this one, too muddled, largely yeasty. Not too exciting.

Super winne, wytrawne, dobrze zaznaczone drewno, ziemia. Posmak krótki i wytrawny, zostają skórki winogron i agrestu. Najlepszy BFM jak dotąd.

BFM Cuvée Alex le Rouge
Very bark clear brown with tan head. Aroma is interesting, chocolate and pepper, some red wine, unusual for an imperial stout. Taste has a lot of roast, chocolate, and coffee, but the dominating wine notes seem to distract from that. As a classic imperial stout, it’s not very good. As a cuvee, it is interesting, but the combination of chocolate, coffee, ash, and sour notes is not the best. It’s obviously a beer of a very particular niche, and I’m not sure how many people would truly enjoy it. I prefer a classic example myself...

Large Format - Very rich red/brown color and very cloudy as well. Some yeast at the bottom of the bottle. Very complex flavors going on. Get hints of caramel and cherry. Only a mild tartness on this beer but that could be because of the age. I have had some of the other years and this is always a great beer.

BFM La Dragonne
don’t let yourself be fooled, this is a fairly weird one. You might actually have to follow the label on preparation steps. Placing this beer in the "Spice/Herb/Vegetable" really doesn’t do it justice as it is a Glühbier, meaning that it is supposed to be consumed hot. Compared to other examples of the style such as Liefmans Glühkriek or Locher Glühbier the BFM La Dragonne does not try to overwhelm you with sugary sweetness. Instead it finishes with a surprising amount of hop bitterness for a warm beverage while the aroma is mostly lead by the added spices (cinnamon, gingerbread, cardamon, maybe juniper), hiding any typical BFM flavors or most beerness for that matter. The only disappointment comes from the lack of mouthfeel on the palate. Its lack of sugar and tannins, which typically provide Glühbier and Glühwein with their mouthfeel leaves you with a watered down sensation between an interesting nose and a pleasant finish...
