BFM √225 Saison
0.33 l bottle from ’Etre Gourmet’, best before July 2018. Slow gusher. Slightly hazy, golden amber with a large, frothy, almost stable, white head. Sweetish, sourish, quite funky, fruity and slightly floral aroma of lemon, gooseberry, oak, barnyard and some vinegar. Slightly sweetish, quite sour, funky, fruity and slightly floral taste of lemon, rhubarb, gooseberry, oak, some hay and quite a bit of vinegar, followed by a medium long, rather tart, slightly woody-dry and a bit grassy finish. Medium body, quite astringent and rather effervescent mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Quite complex, intense and refreshing, a bit too much vinegar maybe, but overall a really tasty beer!

750 ml green bottle, from Vinmonopolet. ABV is 11%. Beautiful reddish brown colour, small off-white head. Strong aroma of red wine vinegar and oak. Sweet and sour flavour, loads of red wine vinegar, also oak. Too sweet and sour for me. Not my cup of tea at all. Waste of money.

This flippy top bottled brew from a bottle shop was served at a cool temperature and poured a very small sized head of foamy fine to medium sized white colored bubbles that were mostly diminishing and left behind a softly carbonated body slightly hazy yellow colored body and a good lacing. The nice aroma was musty and malt hop. The mouth feel was tingly at the start and at the finish with a lingering malt hop aftertaste. The nice flavor contained notes of breads and hops. A decent one that I would consider drinking again.

(Draught at Chez Moeder Lambic Original, Brussels, 20 May 2017) Dark red colour with frothy, beige head. Fruity, sourish nose with red fruit, balsamic vinegar, oak wood and caramel. Fruity, tart taste with notes of red fruit, sour cherries, almonds, caramel, balsamic vinegar and a tart finish with a light sweetness. Low bitterness. Better balanced and with a milder acidity than the 2014 sampled a couple of days earlier. Really tasty and in excellent balance, considering its strength. Excellent beer.

Almost like a smoky biscuit. Vanilla and pepper definitely come through; otherwise, flavours of malt, smoke, chocolate, and nuts. Smells of potpourri, but in an appealing way, not your grandma’s-foyer-sort of way. Like most BFM beers, perhaps not to everyone’s taste and definitely not your typical imp stout, but I’m a huge fan

BFM Jeandy 10th Anniversary Moeder Lambic Original
Draft glass @ Moeder Lambic Fontainas. Extremely dark brown, touch black, deep mocha bubbles, creamy head. Nose is lovely big sour puckering thick vinegar cherry, plum, balasmic vinegar, vinegar malt. Body is acidic, vinegar, touch acetone, massively vinegar heavy but with big plum, red wine, cherry, finish is vinegar chocolate,... Thick balsamic vinegar body, near black licorice. Didn’t really get the smoked pepper. I adore this massive BFM sours. Very sour but with massive flavour.

Draft @ ML Fontainas.

25cl draft from tap at Moeder Lambic Fontainas, Brussels (6 V 2017). This sour barley wine with a blistering 11% ABV is dark amber coloured and has a keen hazy appearance. It has some sparks of reddish gloom and a light brown body. A long-lasting white-beige collar tops this wilde ale. The nose comes with an intruiging, somewhat "puke" and sour wine character. There is little yeast in the aroma as well, perhaps certain scents are brettish too, besides unripe white grapes peel. These make up for some weird flavours for sure. The mouthfeel is weird likewise: In one word, this could be compared with a spiritful rhubarb ale. The onset is very sour with an unusual vinegar body. This sour-faced brew contains a huge alcohol adding, making it a very unusual and even unappealing beer with a plastic palate. This vinegar barley wine is odd in every aspect, making the BFM Abbaye de Saint Bon-Chien interesting and intriguing, and both unsavoury and peculiarly cracked.

Bottle at home, 2015 vintage bottled 2016. Clear orange golden with fizzy off white head. Lots of hay, light spicy yeast, funk, white pepper, red grapes and a hint of wine, black currant, cassis, light bready malts. This is quite funky, and has a lemon tartness running through it. Light sweet, over light bitter and just medium sour. Medium bodied with fizzy carbonation. I love this, it’s pretty damn close to a good fruited lambic. Another underrated BFM gem.
