Moerlein FC Cincinnati Blood Orange IPA
Deep gold beer out of the can. Odd nose of wet grains and citrus. Sweet tart beer with some orange juice and citrus rind taste. The sweet from the blood orange (i assume) doesn’t blend week with the hop bitterness. Kind of a mess to me.

Moerlein Third Wave IPA
12 oz green can. Somewhat rude dull IPA nose. Rocky alabaster head. Taste is strong pointed IPA piercings. Whew, terribly on style nasty mah fah. Barely over 6%, this tastes like 8%. Stronger mouth coating medicinal blunt IPA with a perfumy edge. Bursting floral resin. Not sure if I can handle this viscous brew. I really think this stuff is penetrating the double impy IPA territory. Whew. I don’t like IPA and this stuff is a good reason why I don’t. Except for the mild flowery nose and its effects on the palate, this stuff is some of the nastier IPA around, so I guess that you will like it. GO FOR IT & ignore my numbers, heheheh. This lager lover is not impressed with the attitude of these IPA.

Moerlein Dunkleweiss
Draft to taster from notes. Pours a slightly hazy amber color with a small off white head. The aroma and flavor have banana, cloves, caramel, toffee, wheat malts with just a hint of tart character, nothing really pops with this one.

Moerlein Porter
Draft at the Lager House from notes. Pours a dark brown color with deep reddish highlights and an average creamy beige head. The aroma and flavor have roasted malts, chocolate, a light nutty character, some coffee, earthy bitterness to the finish, a sweetness that I see with Maris Otter, lighter due to the nitro, decent porter.

Christian Moerlein Bock Beer
From old tasting notes. Amber red color with a creamy tan head. Fragrant toasted malt aroma. Bittersweet toasted malt flavor is subtle yet tasty. Good balance and flavor make this a quality brew. It still has a way to go to compare with the bocks of Germany.

Pours a darker amber color with a white head. Citrus and pine hops dominate with some caramel malts. Flavor is strong up front of the pine hops with a nice blend of the caramel malts on the finish. Better than I thought it was going to be.

Moerlein Over-The-Rhine (OTR) Ale
Amber beer with a foamy light tan head that drops considerable lace. Nose of sour dough, caramel, and nuts. Flavor has a little fruity tang initially, which is surprising, followed by bread, nuts, and light caramel, all of which finishes with a slightly acidic bitterness that lingers. Many layers of flavor--pretty good beer.

Moerlein Friend Of An Irishman Stout
Pours black with a thin slowly dissipating beige head. Very "green" odor, with a sort of earthy maltiness. Has a bit of a bite to it, which is a bit jarring, kind of acidic with a lingeting sweetness at the end. Not bad, but not great either.

Moerlein Over-The-Rhine (OTR) Ale
appearance: pretty--reddish orange amber, creamy light tan head. aroma: caramel malts, some stone fruit, grassy to floral hops, and some herbal stuff going on too. taste: slightly bitter, pretty astringent, with some aspirin, light honey and caramel, floral and herbal hops. finish: lingering stone fruit and medicine, some toasted nuts. notes: Not…my favorite. Couple more bottles of this to try, maybe it was just an off night. Bottle from the Craft Beer of the Month Club.

Many thanks to my SecretSanta nimbleprop for this bottle! Black currant in the nose, wood. Fantastic deep Bourbon malty beginning. Deep, round and dry. Intense round and malty with lots of smooth wood. Bourbon without sweetness. Fresh wood, deep. Intense without being too alcoholic. Great intense deep malty Bourbon aftertaste. Fascinating!

Moerlein FC Cincinnati Imperial Blood Orange IPA
22 oz. bottle from Kroger. Pours a clear copper orange color with a small off-white head that settles into a ring and patchy film, leaving plenty of lace in the glass. Like the regular version, it’s a bit too far to the sweet side, with blood oranges, sweet caramel malts, tea, pine, earth, and a late metallic note. There’s also maybe some overripe stone fruit. Some residual sugars, too. Light-bodied, with moderate carbonation and a sweet, thin, metallic mouthfeel. Nothing special but easy to drink.

Moerlein Das Über Lager
Draft at Wiseguy Lounge at Goodfellas Pizza in Over The Rhine on October 6, 2016. Cloudy gold/amber hue, interesting and offbeat malty nose, good malty flavor with biscuit notes and some complexity, enough hops to keep things honest. A little light in body but an intriguing brew nonetheless.

Moerlein Se7en (Seven) Hefeweizen
Draft at Wiseguy Lounge/Goodfellas Pizza in Over The Rhine on August 2, 2016. Cloudy yellow/amber hue, assertive aroma of clove (mostly) and wheat, taste is also heavy on the clove. This is heavier on the clove than I personally prefer, even if it makes the beer more authentic. Adjust my rating to your own taste.

Moerlein Third Wave IPA
Twelve ounce can from Jeff’s Marathon, tasted on July 31, 2016. Medium amber color, nice firm bittersweet aroma with prominent piney hops and citrus, assertive bittersweet flavor with a lot of resin. Balance could be better but a good brew overall. This beer seems to be the replacement for Moerlein Northern Liberties as the brewery’s flagship IPA. I have to say the Northern Liberties is (was?) better.

Moerlein Thousand Weiss
22 oz. bottle from Brentwood Wine & Spirits. Pours a hazy reddish gold with a small white head that settles into a ring. Big blackberry character in here, with wheat, sweet dough, light banana, clove, plums, and sweet raspberries. Medium-bodied, with moderate carbonation and a sweet, fruity mouthfeel. Not necessarily tart at all, like the description suggests, but it delivers on the fruit, with nice body and balance. Surprisingly good. Successful experiment.

2.5
Moerlein Barbarossa Double Dark Lager
Draft at Moerlein Lager House. Rusty chestnut. Broken, but creamy, eggshell foam. Faulty aroma of Red Delicious apple peel, DMS, soggy bran flakes, hint of marzipan. Graceless fizzy carbonation films the palate with foamy residue. Vinegary acids combine with poorly defined malt which is further blurred by DMS. Notes of wet bread hurt the structure and bury the crisper earthy textures. Short-lived snappiness offers some relief from the pervasive DMS. Underattenuated finish is marred by soggy leaves, apricot, and a firm punch of Munich-derived toffee-drizzled hay. Here’s another dud from Morlein. As with their helles and pils, this calls for some fine-tuning.

Moerlein Purity Pils
Draft at Moerlein Lager house. Pristine yellow. Quick, fizzling white head. Curiously hopless aroma, with notes of applesauce, rock candy, popcorn and wet grass clippings. Very flimsy on the tongue. Soft maltiness loses itself in the sugar-water limpness. Profound absence of hops is magnified by the prevalent flabbiness of the malt, which strikes me as wet hay. No vividness or structure, whatsoever. Very sloppy attenuation is compounded by rampant DMS. Wet finish is dominated by applesauce and wet hay. An ironically named beer that’s riddled with impurities. Yet another lager-themed brewery that has major issues producing clean, defect-free beer here in the states. Sad.

TAR
2.9
Moerlein Fifth & Vine Oktoberfest Marzen
Draft at Moerlein Lager House. Dark golden. Snugly packed collar of white foam. Fairly clean, albeit simple, aroma of cookie, marmalade, wet hay and a light note of DMS. Expansive carbonation. A swoosh test produces foamy carbonic residue on the tongue. Pronounced fruitiness on initial sip is muddled by fuzzy DMS and a subtle twang of vinegary acids. Some salvaging crispness beneath the somewhat limp, wet paper malt. Subtle roasted nuttiness trails the firm toastiness as the acidity wanes. Juicy lemony hops sizzle, although their bright oiliness struggles to overcome the husky popcorn and white vinegar characteristics. Obscurely malty, yet well-attenuated finish, shows sugar cookie being eclipsed by wet hay. While vastly superior to most of the other lagers in their range, and certainly more characterful, there just isn’t much here that excites me. Very average.

Moerlein Connector IPA
Draft at the Lager House, served in a pint glass. Pours a cloudy copper color with a small off-white head that forms a lasting film. Pretty intense bitterness for the modest stats, with notes of citrus peel, wildflowers, grass, leaves, lightly toasted and sweet malts, and perfume. Light-bodies, with moderate carbonation and a really bitter mouthfeel that finishes dry. Bitterness lingers. Not bad, but not the most graceful IPA.

bomber shared that poured a thick cloudy reddish color. no head to speak of. the aroma was quite berry and mild wheat. the abv is hidden completely you get no alcohol burn at all. what you get in the flavor is some mild wheat up front followed by tons of berry flavoring. the blackberry melds well with the wheat. overall tasty but sweet, one was good two you probably would be smacking your lips.
