Berghoeve Warm Applaus Barrel Aged Ledaig Whisky

Berghoeve Warm Applaus Barrel Aged Ledaig Whisky
Bottle @ Anti-carnaval Tasting. Nice clear dark red to red-brown color, small to average sized off-white head. Aroma is heavy peat and band-aid. Taste malts, heavy barrel aging in the flavor as well: peat, band-aid, fingerpaint I used as a kid, perhaps a slight hint of smoke. Body is average, carbonation is low. Hmm not my kind of beer, too much peat for me to like it. It also dominates all other flavors imo.

Berghoeve Zwarte Snorre Barrel Aged Bunnahabhain Whisky
Bottle, pours black with almost no head. Wood, roast and whisky. Taste has liquorice, soy, whisky, wood, caramel, apple syrup, salty notes. Thick and rich, a bit sticky, very low carbonation (that’s fine with me). Good stuff.

Berghoeve Warm Applaus Barrel Aged Ledaig Whisky
Bottle from het Biermoment, BB 12 2017, 33 cl sample. Almost clear dsrk redbrown color, short frothy head. Aroma of burned peaty malt, ashy campfire and some sweet and raisiny caramel malts. Raisiny sweetness, dry smokey peat whisky, soft to medium bitterness, bit butterscotch. Reading the label, the beer contains coriander and juniper berry, which I didnt notice at first. Reminding me of Rochefort, where its hard to notice the coriander, as initially you dont expect it in a dark beer. Interesting blend of flavors. Im not a big fan of these dry and peated whiskeys, but for a 6% beer stuffed with spice and juniper berry, it has loads of flavor, without going all kinds of different directions. Nonetheless, its not my favorite combination of flavors.

Berghoeve Zwarte Snorre Barrel Aged Caol Ila Whisky
Bottle. Almost black. Dominant peat, iodine, ash and band-aids in the aroma. Full bodied, velvety, very low on carbon. Ash, peat and iodine dominating the flavor, not leaving much room for other flavors. Very nice beer though, with some warming alcohol.

Berghoeve Zwarte Snorre Barrel Aged Bowmore Whisky
Bottle. Almost black. Soft caramel and roast, but especially peat and pipe tobacco in the aroma. Not thundering, but nevertheless dominant. Malty sweet flavor, full bodied, but once again peat and pipe tobacco playing first violin. Oaky finish, alcohol fairly well hidden. Well balanced, very low on carbon. Well controlled barrel aging.

Bottle from het Biermoment, BB 09 2017, 33 cl sample. Slight hazy golden color, short frothy head. Aroma is slight spicy and flowery saisonish, but mostly sour green apple and lactic notes. Soft citric and lactic acid, bit sweet corny malt. Hmm, I dont know what they intended this to be. A low alcohol beer? A cider/saison blend? If you consider the ABV, its ok, but overall Im not impressed.

Berghoeve Onruststoker Barrel Aged Ledaig Whisky
Bottle from het Biermoment, BB 12 2017, 33 cl sample. Almost clear amber color, medium rocky head. Aroma has slight smoke, some peaty and alcoholic whisky and grainy malt. Feels a lot like a regular grainy high alcohol whisky nose, which I dont particularly like. Slight peaty and smokey in taste, bit dry, slight burned caramel, bit juniper berry. I have to admit that the whisky and the beer blend well together, although the beer itself is probably a bit on the light side in flavor. Still, the barrel aging is definitely not overdone. Its just not my kind of barrel and beer combo.

Bottle, pours dark brown with a beige head. Pretty peaty, salty liquorice, slowly making way for sweet notes, apple syrup, spices, smokey notes, with peat and liquorice returning in the finish. Quite a body for a relatively low abv. Interesting barrel aging, a bit too peaty/dominant.

Berghoeve Zwarte Snorre Barrel Aged Imperial Whisky
The beer looks like a stout should look like. The color of the beer is pitch black. It’s really dark. With a strong light, the beer is still black. No light shines trough. On top of the beer a minimal layer of rough almond coloured foam is formed. The foam collapses, leaving almost nothing. I guess with the right class some creamy foam can be formed. I can’t really say anything about the cloudiness. The smell is incredible. It’s really apparent that this is an oak aged beer. You even immediately smell that those were whiskey barrels. The smell is dark and strong, delicious and complex. The roasted malts give delicious bitter and sweet aromas of coffee, clearly chocolate, toffee. The maltiness is very strong, and even smells like a barleywine. I also smell rich, warming and rather sweet red fruits. Some raisin and plum. Above this all, there is a clear aroma of oakwood, giving a slightly sour touch that reminds of red wine. There is also a delicious warming, alcohol rich touch of whiskey, contributing to the chocolate and fruit aromas and giving a spicy and woody kick. Delicious. Hops are not really present. The taste is great to, but not as complex and rich as the smell. The oak aged touch is still present, giving a wine-like flavour. Dark red fruits, chocolate, hints of coffee. Especialy the malts and oak wood are clearly present. Hops are not that strong, but some bitter hop touches are tastable. More than in the smell. Sweets and delicate sours are in good balance with the bitters of the hops. Well balanced but spicy beer. The palate of the beer is perfect. The body of the beer is very full and the texture is thick. It reminds me a bit of port, with also has quite a high viscosity. The smell and taste also contain some port-like aspects. There is a delicious warming sensation thanks to the high alcohol percentage. Carbonation is very low, almost non at all. The finish is of nice length and contain some strong whiskey features. It really leaves an impression. I like how the beer gets better every sip. Great brew, great ageing.

Bottle from Biernavigatie, BB 06 2017, 33 cl sample. Slight hazy golden to orange color, short frothy head. Aroma of smoke, beechwood and spicy rye. Decription says "kruidig rookbier", which perfectly summarizes the aroma. In taste not much different, spicy, some malty rye notes and a subtle (beechwood?) smoke. Might be a bit thin in flavor, but overall well balanced. Good one.

Bottle [unlabeled bottle just marked as "sour saison", gift from the brewers, thanks Jurgen & Geralda!] @ home. A bit unclear orange golden color, no head. Aroma is a bit faint, at least I have a hard time describing it. Flavor reminds me of green apples and green apple peel, medium sourness initially but it quickly subsides to a light sour-bitter and rather dry finish. Decent body and carbonation. Room for improvement, but definitely a nice low ABV beer.

Bottle @ home. Opaque dark brown to black color, medium sized quite dense off-white to beige head that lasts for a decent while. Aroma is malts, a hint of dark fruits. Don’t get much more. Taste malts, again a hint of dark fruit, light hints of chocolate in the background and perhaps a distant hint of brown candy sugar. Decent beer but the flavors aren’t as ’full’ as I had expected and hoped.
