Can from Meditrina. Very pale clear gold with lasting head. Pungent grassy aroma with hints of fruit and bread. Medium light crackery apricot bready sweetness with Medium heavy grassy long bitterness in with come residual lightly toasted malts. Light body fairly lively. Probably more bitter than it should be. Not really refreshing like a summer beer should be. Decent enough.

16 oz can from Half Time. Clear golden, foamy white head. Fairly bright aroma, grass, herbal hops, rice, lemon, and a bit of spice. Dry, grassy flavor. Good, but not outstanding mouthfeel. A pretty tasty pils, but not a top of style palate, we rich is really what I’m looking for from a great pils.

This one is rather interesting. Unfortunately there is plenty of DMS in both the nose and the taste. It imparts an unfinished or over-agitated essence to it. The finish has a surprisingly sharp bitterness that does not in any way seem related to any hops. This one needs more work. Ending on a positive note, I will say that this bear’s strength is its crisp body. Very nice texture and appropriate to the style.

von Trapp Dunkel Lager
Toasted nut on the nose that sticks around and blends well with simple syrup sweetness. Rich texture, not watery but also not at all heavy. No doubt this is all about the malt. There is enough bitterness to create a fairly clean finish-in this case the label is accurate. Really good stuff.

von Trapp Weissbier
Pours a hazy bold orange golden color with a finger plus of white foam. Nose is wheat heavy with some underlying fruit, apricot, citrus, clove, crusty bread. Palate follows and is pretty true to style with nice balance of flavors. Spicy yeast esters ride into a bitter buckwheat honey midpalate wrapped in light undertones of apricot, banana and lingering clove.

16 oz. can from The Beer Store. Poured a cola like brown, semi clear, with a fingers worth of creamy beige head. Caramel malt and nuts on the nose. Subtle earthy hops. Taste is lightly sweet. More caramel malt with a hint of chocolate malt and a little hint of hops on the swallow. Medium bodied with light carbonation. Went down pretty easy.

From the 16 oz. can dated 03/16/17. It pours a handsome looking amber tone with red hues under a long lasting off-white light tan foamy head. Big aroma of sweet caramel and toffee malts. butterscotch perhaps, molasses perhaps, and a low to no hop profile. The body is mostly medium but it has a hint of acidity. The taste begins sweet and malty but there is a bigger bitterness at the end that the 20 IBUs would suggest.

Bottle from Lisai’s CHester Market. Copper with slight chill haze lasting head and lace. Grassy honey toasted caramel aroma. Medium toasted almonds caramel honey vanilla sweetness with medium earthy spicy peppery bitterness in crisp finish. Light body lively fine carbo. It would be pretty hard to make one of these better than this. Excellent.

von Trapp Bock Bier
Poured into a lager glass, the appearance was a ruddy burnt amber fairly close to brown color with a slight transparency about it. Two finger white foamy head sustained for a good little bit and gently subsided leaving some light semi-ring-like foamy lace. The aroma had sweet to oven roasted tones of caramel, toffee, earth, grassiness, butterscotch, lager yeasty smooth sweetness, toast, some nuts and some light cereal grains. The flavor blended the malty tones to the grassy and earthy tones in a dried sweet manner. Lingering bready/malty qualities follow through in the aftertaste to ride on into the finish. The feel was almost medium bodied, seemed like it sat just a tad underneath. Lightly carbonated, this one felt pretty close to the projected ABV. Overall, really nice bock that is nice to drink this time of year, especially when we’re having this cold Spring that we seem to be having.

Squealer from Brewfest Beverage. Black with lasting small head and lace. Smoky aroma with hints of whiskey chocolate and purple grapes. Medium light very fruity sweetness with hints of chocolate. Dry smoky finish with mild woody bitterness. Medium light body, very "wet" without being watery. (Not sure how to describe, please BM me if there’s a better way). Sessionable, extremely quaffable. von Trapp Bock Bier
Ar: Medium aroma of melanoidin-rich malts, like Vienna or Munich, with the characteristic toasted, slightly tangy aroma; medium-intensity hops, very spicy and peppery, with a touch of resin; a hint of sulfur. Ap: Deep amber and clear; large light tan head with good retention, leaves a pattern of lacing along the glass sides, a ring of foam, and some suds. T: Rich, smooth melanoidin character; mildly sweet, with some light tannins; umami on the finish, with a slightly metallic hint; clean fermentation profile, really letting the rich melanoidin-type malts shine; bitterness is medium, with a peppery, very herbal flavor, and slightly astringent finish. P: Medium body with high carbonation, finish is dry. O: A pretty nice dark bock beer; the rich base malts come through pretty strongly, and the fermentation profile is quite clean; some of the metallic and tannic notes could be dialed back, though.

von Trapp Dunkel Lager
Draught at Salty Pig, 3/4/17.
Clear, milk chocolate with lighter amber tints and a small, beige head of low to moderate retention.
Grainy, caramel-laden malts also imbue light chocolate and slight red fruits in the nose as a bare, grassy, noble hop character adds a touch of levity. Mineral, yeast and bread sit on the end rather plainly, but do impart a freshness.
Soft, well-attenuated and leaning on the caramel malt for a light sticky sweetness as it mixes with the base malt. Lightly grainy and bready at times with low but moderately-engaging carbonation. Pretty standard, well-executed, traditional dunkel, on the lighter side. Won’t find any (American) hops here....

This definitely is one of those offerings that tries to appeal to both the IPA drinkers and the Pale/Pils/lager drinkers. I think it does an admirable job of providing the drinkability of the German Pils style, and foregoing the spicy hops for the Americanized citrus hops. Not bad. I need to try this one again and I may have to re-rate.

von Trapp Trosten Barrel Aged
Out of growler filled on February 18, 2017. Beautiful dark brown pour with ruby hues and a modest, short-lived tan head. Lacing. The aroma emits a definite barrel aging character. A Bourbon-like dark fruity sensation with a hint of smoke and a low to no hop profile. Muted sweetness. The body feels a little thin. The taste is hard to explain but the barrel-aging is abundant along with dark fruit, black cherry, booze (despite being 6%), and a low to no hop bitterness at the end.

von Trapp Bohemian Pilsner
Bottle pour into nonic pint glass. Appearance is hazy greenish-yellow with mild sparkle, finger-width white fizzy head with poor retention and sparse lacing. Aroma is bread, biscuit, light Munich malt, light fruit--grape?, and champagne-like yeastiness. Taste is strong cracker malt and light fruitiness, mixed with stronger European hop bitterness. Palate is light-to-medium bodied with lightly fizzy texture, average carbonation and dry crackery-bitter finish. Overall, I’m not high on the style as a whole, but there is a fair amount going on here, all things being equal.

Can. Pours clear dark amber with a one-finger, white, somewhat lasting head that leaves poor lacing. Aroma of malt, caramel and tangerines. Flavor follows nose, light to medium body, appropriate carbo, full mouthfeel in the finish which is lightly bitter but intensifies in the far finish. The finish contains an odd chemical flavor that is not that pleasant. Not again for me.

von Trapp Trosten Bier
12 ounce bottle from Pearl Street Beverage in Burlington, VT, drunk a few minutes out of the fridge in a Zywiec lager glass. Darkly translucent cola color, thick off-white lasting large-bubbled head which laces finely as it decays...lightly spicy (cinnamon) toasty aroma offers more than a little smokiness, a hint of vanilla...body is a bit sweet at the front, a bit less so in the middle and finish but still perhaps more sugary than most in this style, yet offering plenty of that dark roastiness and a very smooth lager body, with a touch of bitterness to finish and light prickly carbonation; could be a little fuller I suppose but this is small as issues go. All in all an excellent representation to this palate; I wish I’d bought more von Trapp stuff on my recent visit back east but you can’t have everything.

von Trapp / Hoppebrau Collaboration No.1
Also known as "Collaboration #1" with Hoppebrau. I poured my can into a mug (correct for the style). The appearance was a burnt orange almost brown color with a thin white foamy head that concaved to leave a little valley of a head in the middle. Moderate messy lacing. The aroma leads with the grassy bitter hopping, full and charging the malts in a nice smooth sweet malty lager yeastiness. Rich caramel, toastiness, nuts all come together to blend nicely. The flavor takes the malts nicely to the hops, blends sweet and lets the bitterness really collide well. Huge bitter hoppy burst into the malts in the aftertaste. Dry grassy bitter finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a nice sessionability about it. Good carbonation is felt all around. A bit more bitterness comes across than normally associated with the amber lager style, but hey, the brewers warned us, right? I’m not worried, are you? Overall, an amber lager hopheads could really like. I say try it if you see it.
