Huber Bock Beer
12 ounce bottle. Pours a translucent cola brown color capped by a small creamy beige head. Caramel malt nose redolent of marinated beef. Sweet light roasted malt flavor has a creamy mouthfeel. Lots of sweet caramel and toasted bread flavor in midtaste. Subtle hop bitterness in finish. Lacks the depth and complexity of most German bocks, but good nonetheless.

Weird pale yellow. Malty aroma. Taste is of corny malt with a metallic hint. It is cheap, but I have a job, so I will buy something else in the future.

NGB Gluten Free Lager
Overall not totally undrinkable, especially if you’re gluten-free like me (only recently); however, this is my 1st GF beer--and after this one I’ll be trying the others. The 1st 1/2 of it I drank from the bottle, which tasted better than the 2nd 1/2 from a Pilsner glass (to see the color). Like many of the other reviews I’ve read, yes: watery, thin, notes of apple cider, slightly floral, big bubbles that disappear quickly (instantly vanishing head)--close to flat--finishes like not much at all is there. But there’s still a light pleasantness to it that I would enjoy in Spring & Summer with fruit (watermelon comes to mind) or a salad. It’s kind of more like a cross between a mineral water & beer. To me, it wouldn’t stand up to richer foods like pizza, except maybe a veggie pizza :)

Can. The following is a compilation of a dozen peoples’ thoughts who shared this brew with me at my first (and perhaps last?) Malt Liquor Dexterity Games Tournament to celebrate my birthday. Keeping in mind that most of the participants are not regular beer raters, here we go: clear pale yellow, aroma of eggy fart and dirty dishrag, sweet corny and gross, I would prefer an actual axe to the head thanks, 11/100 well done, just awful, it certainly tastes strong but 11%??...come on man, sulfur and soap what’s not to love?

Keeping in mind that most of the participants are not regular beer raters, here we go: clear ruby-pink, smells and tastes like Robatussin cough syrup, come to think of it, I’d rather just drink the cough syrup, melted cherry slush, junior high smooches, best served cold or not at all, toilet cough syrup, Nyquil’s new brand, it’s like your love it’s bad medicine, PREMIUM cough syrup, is Robatussinesque even a word? erythromicin suspension for my ear infection is better than this.

Can. The following is a compilation of a dozen peoples’ thoughts who shared this brew with me at my first (and perhaps last?) Malt Liquor Dexterity Games Tournament to celebrate my birthday. Keeping in mind that most of the participants are not regular beer raters, here we go: nearly colourless, certainly the palest of all the swill we’ve tried tonight, aroma reminiscent of marzipan biscuits, flavour is sickly sweet like tequila and cardboard, there is some alarming black schmegma at the end of the pour that is truly foul and smells like adhesive tape. Sweet sixteen not all night, like prostitute member of the champagne family, really really yucky, I hate my life right now, welcome to the newly lowered bar, probably better to snort this, tastes like bubbles on a wet box (and not the good kind).

Bottle pour. Appearance is dark brown with tinge of red--almost opaque--with finger width creamy beige head with poor retention and trace lacing. Aroma is light roasted malts with mild chocolate. Taste is bittersweet roasted malts, chocolate and light coffee. Palate is medium bodied with thick, smooth texture, soft carbonation and chocolatey-roasted malt finish. Overall, the elements are all there but everything is a little on the light side.

Huber Bock Beer
DATE: February 17, 2017... OCCASION: Friday relaxing with Shan... GLASSWARE: Celebrator doppelbock pokal... pours a velvet-black body... the head folds to a thin ring of off-white cream... light roasted, punchy malts evoke chocolate and dry fruit... the body is reasonable, untextured, soft at the start and flourishing at the finish.... a beer that sips like it would be fine straight from the body, but could be okay treated in glass... grape, raisin, bitter malts, cereal grains and caramel--a toned-down 40 oz. to some degree, but less harsh...easy-drinking, lively, and weightier than the average lager, but not a bock in the power profile... not familiar with Huber, but having found this one through a mix-twelve, I am no worse for wear...

Minhas Chocolate Bunny Stout
Rhinelander Boatswain Chocolate Stout, 22oz bottle from Trader Joe’s, in a Sam Smith pint glass. Faint aromas of chocolate malt, vanilla, caramel, wet earth and a trace of candied plums. Pours oily black with generous effervescence on the glass and a finger of foamy tan head that dissipates in a matter of minutes. Uncommonly starchy malt up front, not unlike spaghetti water, followed by light roast coffee and earth with sweet chocolate, caramel and vanilla notes emerging on the finish. Medium- to full-bodied on the palate. Good carbonation, decent balance with lightly mouth-coating sweetness. For the $2.00 pricetag you can certainly do a lot worse, but the biggest criticism I can make here is simply that there isn’t much intensity to this brew. The aromatics are nice, but weak, the flavor is nuanced and appealing, but starchy and weak, and other than the assertive carbohydrates there’s really nothing memorable or unique to distinguish it from any other major commercial or craft dark beer on the market. It’s just generic, starchy dark beer, which is probably exactly what a person should expect when they buy the store brand? Lesson learned.

Axe Head Malt Liquor
Initially poured from 40 into a pint glass (just because I sorta feel I have too…), but then drank the rest from the bottle as it actually should taken down. Appearance – The beer pours a golden straw color with a tiny fizzy white head. The head fades very fast to leave a hint of foam on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma of the brew is strongest of a mix of corn, hot booze, and a little bit of caramel. Taste – The taste begins much less boozy then I was anticipating from the nose with it being mostly of a corn taste mixed with some sweetness of corn syrup and caramel. As the taste advances some of the sweetness fades all while the corniness gets stronger and is joined by some musty tastes. Toward the end some of the booze hits the tongue, but overall remains rather light (for a malt at 11% abv.) and ends up leaving one with a stale corn taste to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel - The body of the brew is on the slightly more watery side with a carbonation level that is rather high. For the high gravity malt liquor the feel is spot on and helps to create a more easy drinking brew overall. Overall – For an 11% malt I was expecting a booze bomb, but really it was not all that hot. It certainly was more easy drinking then I was anticipating.

Can in COS. Nose is a horrid apple and rotten fruit with corn and skank. Black can with silver cat. Taste is moderately sweet and way less offensive than the aroma. As you drink it gets sweeter and more phenolic, alcohol, pepper. Not bad for 11%. Better than many shitty American brewed Belgian beers. I’ve had worse

Solo Lager
Poured out of a 330ml bottle with a painted label. The says "A Superior Experience", and it is, if you’ve never had a beer. Ever. Pours out the colour of apple juice with no head or lacing at all. The taste is sour, rotten citrus fruits. I really can’t detect much else. Maybe they should have called it a Wild Ale. This beer cost me $1.00cdn and it was an impulse buy because it was in a buggy right next to the till. So, buying this beer for quality is a lot like buying the the National Enquirer for truth.

Mountain Crest Lighthouse Light Lager
Poured from a can into a pint glass Appearance – The beer pours a light golden color with a fizzy white head. The head fades super fast leaving almost no lace on the sides of the glass. Smell –The aroma of the brew is mostly of a corn smell mixed with a little bit of a musty aroma. Taste-The taste begins with a sweeter corn syrup taste mixed with a little bit of a grain. As the taste moves on some lighter flavors of caramel and even more corn come to the tongue. In the end one is left with a somewhat more sweet corn cereal taste to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is very thin and light with a carbonation level that is rather average. The thin body is prime for the sweeter and subdued tastes of the brew. A little higher carbonation would have been slightly better for the lightness of the brew, but even so, the feel was alright overall. Overall – For a 4% abv. brew that clocks in at only ~95 calories I am not going to expect a flavor powerhouse. Nothing is really off in the taste, but nothing is really on either. It is sort a standard light brew overall.

NGB Gluten Free Lager
NGB has a thin, white head, a clear, bubbly appearance, some white sediment chunks, and no lacing left behind. The aroma is of odd medicinal, grassy syrup, and the flavor is of those elements, with a strange "zing" to it, at the end of each sip. Mouthfeel is medium, and NGB finishes medium dry. Tastes like a health food store item. RJT

Minhas Imperial Jack Double IPA
22 ounce bottle (as "Rhinelander" Imperial Jack) picked up at Woodman’s in Beloit for the ridiculous and mind-boggling price of $2.50 and consumed cold from the fridge from a Flying Fish pint. Pours a small to moderate white head atop a light amber, very clear body, leaving bare hints of lacing as it decays with moderate speed...weak sugary nose - brown sugar and maybe honey, a hint of thyme, some plastic qualities...surprisingly not as sweet on the tongue, though still a bit sugary - some woody/dry qualities throughout, a bit of caramelized malt, just a touch of sourness and acidity...dry finish, somewhat syrupy mouthfeel, low to moderate carbonation. I was kind of expecting horrible after my last couple of Minha’s experiences, so with those low expectations...well, it’s passable at best.

Minhas Oktoberfest (2013-present)
Draught pint at Fib’s North in Brodhead, Wisconsin, October 2nd, as "Pecatonica Oktoberfest". Dark amber with little head, even when swirled...sweet brown sugar and toasty notes on the nose, a touch of oregano, pretty solid and expected for what it is...alas it falls apart in the mouth, being overly - almost aggressively sweet at the front, and quickly fading into a very dry and bitter metallic/mineralic finish - rust on limestone...watery body, slightly high carbonation level. If I’d known at the time that this was brewed at Minhas...ah well, they didn’t have a great tap selection to begin with.

Minhas Thumper American IPA
22 ounce bottle (labeled "Rhinelander Thumper IPA") picked up at Woodman’s in Beloit for the exorbitant price of $2.50 (yes that’s right) and consumed cold from the fridge in a Fitger’s pint glass. Pours an off-white smooth head that dies slowly leaving no sign of it’s passing in the receptacle above the clear fine-bubbled amber body...aroma is resinous/piney and unfortunately a bit buttery (diacetyl), promising something sweet and gooey...on the tongue perhaps not quite as bad as I feared, but very sweet nonetheless, syrupy and near-cloying with not even close to enough bitterness or malt to balance out the pure sugariness; while it does dry out slightly at the finish, it remains a tough go and this bomber ain’t gonna drink itself, and that was it’s only chance to be consumed. I guess there’s a reason they’re selling this line for about half the price of the next-cheapest bombers...I remember when I moved back here 3 years ago, I was excited to find that there was a Rhinelander brewery, the name has always had magic to me from childhood and young adulthood visits "up north". Well, so much for magic.

Boxer Hard Root Beer
Visual: 6pack of 330ml. Pours dark root beer brown with large soda CO2 bubbles clinging to the side of the glass, no head, clusters of active streams.

Nose: big artificial root beer soda, cane sugar (lvl-8)-pungency

Attack: thicker-slick mouthfeel, crisp burpy soda CO2

Mid-palate: (lvl-8-sweetness), cane sugar, artificial root beer flavouring, big nutmeg numbness,

Finish: molasses sweet, huge vanilla, mildly cloying, onset of heartburn.

Summary: The taste and mouthfeel is that of a soda instead of a beer, giving me a impression of a Barq’s/A&W/Mugs, mostly artificial (no wintergreen/sarsaparilla/sassafras). It does however taste rather good with the vanilla, molasses, cane sugar, and blend of other subtle spices. This is easy to kick back with a meal or just to quench your thirst. Warning though, it is sweet like a soda and may those who are prone to it heartburn.
