Bottle with tderoeck and JefVerstraete. Very bold golden with a creamy head that dissipates rather quickly. Aroma is faint, but there’s some hay in there somewhere along with vanilla. Taste is a little sugary, with orange cheesecake and a bit of lemon tart.

Belfort 9° Bruin
New Belfort beer commissioned by a hobby brewer in Lennik, follow-up to the blonde tripel version since June 2017 - as a Belgian blonde beer needs a brown counterpart, of course. From a 75 cl bottle with cork shared by Craftmember, cheers! Thinnish, egg-white, relatively quickly collapsing head over a translucent amberish-tinged chestnut brown beer. Aroma of hard butterscotch candy, cooked turnip, dried apricot, banana, caramel, coriander seed, cold tea (herbal effect from the dry-hopping I guess), burnt sugar, toast, bubblegum. Banana ester with a hint of pear in the onset, sweetish but not overly so for this style, softish carbo, supple mouthfeel, not feeling like 9% ABV. Some residual brown sugars over a caramelly malty middle, butterscotch-like, but something cooked vegetable-like as well; toasted malt bitterishness in the end accentuated by this herbal, almost tea-ish hop presence, but still ending in caramelly sweetishness; alcohol remains well hidden. Technically accomplished and unusually dry-hopped for a Belgian ’massieve ale’, but could do with more personality as far as I’m concerned - in other words, sitting at about the same level of quality as its blonde predecessor.

Tap. Pours quite hazy reddish chestnut, medium creamy beige head, great lacing. Aroma is loaded with dark dried fruit, Belgian spice, oak, Vinous notes, cotton candy, smoke, candi sugar, toffee. Flavors is quite sweet, medium bitter, super complex. Full boost. I meant body,, but boost works too. I am at boost 8, not driving tonight, which is a good thing. Fuck, I love Burlington.

Abtsolution drinks incredibly easy for a Quad. This collaboration has some nontraditional additions (lactose, barrel-aging), but it totally captures the essence of the Quad. Dark brown color. Fat malt-forward nose. Usual array of Belgian flavors. Date, fig, raisin, cherry, prune, plum, black currant, caramel, and brown sugar flavors. Rich and soft feel - full-bodied. It would be a real pleasure to taste another bottle after some age.

Not a bad quad, full of figs and dates, dried cherries and clove, with a firm hop bitterness on the back end and a spicy, slightly bread-laced fade. Runs a tad sweet, but an underlying tartness offsets the lactose. Texture seems a bit slack for a proper Belgian, but the alcohol is well hidden and the flavors provide enough complexity to have another pint.

Bas-Bieren Limerick
Finale faible. CONCLUSION : une bière qui nous fait pleurer .. it’s a long way to Limerick ... (6/3/4/2/8)

Plummy brown hue with a thin light tan head. Amazing nose of faint cinnamon rolls with doughy pastry and a kiss of cinnamon candy but with beery tones of deep maltiness and oak and vanilla and plums/dates and a touch of cocoa and light rye whiskey and a kiss of earthy malt. Smooth flavor that’s deep and Belgian malty with a nice touch of oak and gentle whiskey, light pastry like tones and light cocoa, and a light raisin and warmth finish.

Late evening, what’s-the-hotel-bar-got beer. Pours hazy gold, creamy white froth. Smells like sweet honey and (phenolic) spice. Bittersweet, peardrop center, herbal-bitter, zesty-yeasty and tingle of alcoholic warmth. Bitterness lingers a while, with the warmth. Sweetness is relatively restrained. Well put together.

Bottle at home. pours clear, golden blonde, medium stable, fluffy white head. Smell is white bread, but not much more. very weak scent, really. Taste is medium sweet, starts of having some honey aspects, bit malty ( bready, doughy ) and a very elegant floral spark. mild dryness from the yeast. There seems to be a very minor off-thing going from the yeast , but it’s hardly detectable to me. Mild bitterness. Not bad, not great. Appart from the mild yeast-condition, i’d call this a touch better than average, but well, it’s there, so... Less sticky sweet than most in the style. OK carbo and MF.

At Het Spijker, Ghent. Pours clear golden with a big, foamy, white head. The aroma contains - obviously - ’gagel’ (Bog Myrtle or sweetgale), herbs, spices, hops, yeast and pepper. It tastes light to medium bitter with a spicy onset, and light sweet. Some pepper in the rather astringent finish. Slick texture, fizzy carbonation. Different in taste than other beers, but I can’t say that I enjoyed it a lot.

Stepa Double (sugar-free Ale)
The dubbel in this sugar free series and therefore the follow-up to Nog Eéntje, the sugar free beer for diabetics I remember from another era, developed by and in collaboration with the brother of Dirk Naudts, the man who started the now legendary ’Proef’brouwerij. Also sweetened with extracts from the South American stevia plant - I remember owning one of those a long time ago - and containing only 0.3% residual sugar if their website is to be believed. Thickly cobweb-lacing, off-white, dense and moussy head, remaining almost completely closed for a very long time, over a lightly hazy deep mahogany brown beer with reddish-coppery hue. Aroma of raw brown sugar, children’s medicine or indeed aspartame (the precursor to stevia, in a certain way), chalk, caramel candy, ’Koetjesreep’ or Nesquik ’ersatz’ powder chocolate, red cabbage, candied date, soap, antacid tablets, mud, stewed pear, dried plum, apple sauce, industrial honey. Sweet, honeyish onset, candied date, apple sauce and a dash of banana with a dim sourish undercurrent for balance but still a bit cloying, the cloyingness quickly washed away by a fizzy, further souring carbonation effect, a tad overcarbonated for a dubbel but still smooth and slick, if not a bit resiny in mouthfeel. Caramelly malt sweetness prevails in the middle with slight nutty hints here and there as well as a sharper, bit grainy undertone with a thin metallic edge to it somewhere; leads to a malty finish with still a lot of this residual sweetness - feeling much, much more than 0,3% actually - as well as this slight metallic accent hanging around, some earthy and spicy but ’aromatically deaf’ hop bitterness, some warming, ’jenever’-like alcohol (which should not at all be this obvious in any beer below 7-8%) and a vague echo of this chalky and magnesium-like, near-chemical, bitterish undertone that was there from the start. I remember Stevia leaves (when the plant was still available as a plant on the Belgian market - thanks to the same guy who commissioned Nog Eéntje and, after that, this very beer) having that same medicinally-magnesium-like bitterish aftertaste and this weird, not all too pleasant side-flavour has been well communicated here, no less so than in the tripel version. Sweet dubbel with the same magnesium-like side notes as its stronger blonde counterpart and that weird side flavour is exactly what ruins this for me - and probably for a lot of other beer lovers as well. I understand the good intentions - as well as the less commendable commercial ones - of this range, but the combination of overt sweetness (Stevia is a lot sweeter than even sugar) with this unpleasant medicinal bitter side flavour without too many hops to intercept this, seems completely out of balance and to me personally is rather indegistible, though admittedly I did expect even worse from this. Still: this is basically the same beer as that Nog Eéntje, with a somewhat tweaked recipe and a tad less alcohol, so I will base my rating here on a comparison with its own ancestor - resulting in an ex aequo.

Delhaize Brett on Wood - Hungarian Oak
7-4-7-3-14. Aroma: lots of bitter tannines, sour apples and some funk. Not very abundant but interesting. Too sharp for me, would have liked it softer and more sour or funky. Taste the shame: sour and bitter, more yeasty towards the end of the 75cl bottle. Not too bad: it even grows on you while finishing a quarter liter bottle. Somewhat complex but a little watery too. Might be a little cheap but still better than an average belgian. I have a feeling Delhaize favored the commercial ( prize ) aspect of the beer more than the quality; knowing that the beer has retired, maybe they shouldn’t have. By that I mean: maybe it could have been a really great beer.

** Aged for around 4 years ** Deep amber red color with minimal off-white foam. Aromas sweet of ripe fruits, such as cherries, plums, and figs followed with sweet malty backbone. Palate, medium to full body with smooth oily texture leaving sweet sugary finish. Taste, rather sweet, fruity with cherry and plum notes as well as caramel and light boozy touch. Overall, fairly nice, for some reason does remind a bit of delirium red for the cherry/ sweet fruity notes, although not as heavy as I thought it would be. but still rather nice, would be interesting to compare it to fresh one.

Very nice looking orange and large bubbly head. Soft fruity aroma with light grassy herbal hop, biscuit malts. Very mild. Good but unoriginal. Ar: White grapes, very vinous; bright citrus and pineapple, very pronounced; some tart acidity, lemony and wine-like. Ap: Golden yellow and hazy; small white head with medium-low retention, leaving a colony of suds, a thin haze of foam, and a solid ring. T: Tart and lemony; lots of white grapes, almost like a sauvignon blanc; moderate hay and low barnyard; lemon, lime, and grapefruit rinds; bitterness is low, with a lean, leafy hop character; on the finish it is chalky and lightly acidic, with lingering pineapple, white grape, and lime. P: Light body with high carbonation; finish is dry. O: This is a world-class saison; it has the dryness, brightness, and quaffability of a great saison; added in is a complementary wildness--pineapple, barnyard, and acidity--and some excellent hop flavors; the white grape character is really unique, too.
