Narragansett Del’s Shandy
Can from Total Wine & More - McLean - I like a good shandy, but I didn’t enjoy this one. It’s all tinny mediocre wheat beer with not much crisp lemon. Disappointed.

Surprised I’ve never officially logged a rate for this one. Clear golden pour with white head that dissipates and fades. Medium to bright carbonation on the palate. Light bready malt notes, soft spice and not too much else going on. Nothing super offensive.

Pours a rich caramel red-brown from a can, some lacing. Rich spicy noble hop aroma along with a bit of toffee. Flavor is rich, definitely pick up on some of the chocolate malts, along with a light melon refreshingness followed again by some spicy hoppiness, almost like some rye in there without the sourness. I would say Saaz, but I’m not familiar with Perle. Very good beer.

Blah. A boring pale lager almost worse than the macros. Aroma was weak. Stale lager smell. Pour was a clear light gold with a one finger white head. Taste was just like a macro with a little more substance. Not much flavor with a sweet finish. Mild carbonation.

The aroma is a pleasant mixture of caramel and sweet berry fruits. The body is a dark caramel amber that is topped with a modest off-white head. It has a modest amount of bitterness. It is sweet and malty. Smooth and with average carbonation. Delicious!

16oz can at War Mouth. Pours clear pale gold with a foamy white head. Aromas of bread, sweet malt, corn. Flavors are similarly grainy, sweet malt, light hops, yeast. Light bodied with a short sweet finish. Much better than I expected, definitely a step up from the usual macros of the world, especially given the price. Need something to drink on a hot day that you don’t want to think about too much? This might be it.

Pint can from SL. Nose spice, wood, dark toffee, a little dough. Pour amber-caramel with a golden bottom and a perfectly dense, foamy beige head. Taste spicy dough, heavy Munich, earthy, low red berry, medium-sweet, low-medium bitter, cream, lemon spritz, light-medium pine and attendant spice, low but present resin. Strawberry, peach, wheat, very subtle nutty roast that’s more like spice. Much (lemony/citrusy) brighter than traditional Altbier, less bitter with hops used differently. This is an amber ale to me, but one with a very nice balance of IPA signifiers and lager melanoidins and fruit. Smooth and satisfying, with sticky lips. Too rich for quick drinking, but ultimately a winner, I’d be happy to have again. [2017.07.20: 3.4]

Narragansett Town Beach India Pale Ale
Poured from a 16 oz can into a mason jar. It has a basic but pleasant sweat sock and hop aroma. The appearance is a clear amber, just a shade darker than a lager, but appealing nonetheless. The taste is a smooth clear hop bite. Extremely easy drinking and basic, but enjoyable and good for a hot summer day. Good for coming home from a long day in Rhode Island where you revisited some old haunts and saw Rey Mysterio 619 one last time.

This stuff is very cheap, like 8 bucks for a 16oz 6pk. But honestly compared to macros of the same style its pretty good! Sweetish pale malt and corn aroma. Clean crisp taste; corn and a slight malt sweetness. A little chalky taste in the back end. Heavier bodied than the average beer of this style. Non offensive. A good session beer

From the 16 oz. pint can which was canned 05/04/17. Good looking amber brown pour with long lasting cream colored head. Good clarity. The aroma is most definitely sweet caramel malt forward with a clean, grassy hop cleanliness too. The body is around medium with some level of astringency. The taste tends to lean sweet with a clean, crisp finish.

16 oz Cain from Growlers to go. The ale poured a clear Amber color with an off white head and lacing. The aroma of bread and citrus greets you. This is balanced but on the light side. The medium body ale has average carbonation. The finish is clean with lingering bitterness. When we lived in RI we consumed many Gansett beers.

Ar: Pale crackers, some sulfur and corn; herbal, lean hop aroma. Ap: Golden and crystal clear; medium-large white head with moderate retention, leaves a nice cap of streaking foam and some trains of froth on the glass sides. T: Clean crackers with a bit of sulfur up front; the slightest hint of corn, with a bit of sweetness; a little toast; bitterness is medium-low, with a touch of herbal hop flavor; finish is a bit of chalk, more cracker malt, and a clean bitterness. P: Medium-light body with high carbonation; finishes dry. O: A refreshing American pale lager; has some flavor to it, while being overall quite clean and understated; well-made and easy to sit back and drink.

Narragansett Porter
Poured into a mug, the appearance was a black color with a finger’s worth of white foamy head that fell off at a moderate pace. Slight lace. The aroma had a nice blend of roast to sweet chocolate malts and coffee portions. Light vanilla, some caramel, touch of earthiness round out the end. The flavor blended the previously mentioned aromas fairly nice to slide right on into the aftertaste and follow through on the finish. The palate was almost medium bodied, seemed to sit just a touch under and having a good carbonation and ABV. Smooth yet balancing roastiness guided the feel nicely along my tongue. Overall, pretty good porter I could do again.

Glad to be the first to rate this! Super nice hazy amber coloured body with a great copper glow and a peachie tint, all with a thin and fast-dying tan head. Aroma of crisp malt, toffee, sticky figs and pitted fruits and a dose of toasted grain or perhaps oatmeal. Aftertaste shows almost no sweetness, some subdued grainy flavours, a dose of yeast and astringent notes and a smooth toasted malt flavour with a faint hint of caramelised sugars. Overall, a nice altbier that shows some grain and subdued toffee notes that has some moderate complexities and a bite of earth near the very end. Not a bad beer and a good one for breaking the monotony of hoppy beers and light lagers. I sampled this sixteen ounce pour on draught at Whole Foods in Pentagon City (Arlington), Virginia on 02-June-2017 for US$5,00 sampled at the end of my driveway.

Narragansett Bohemian Pilsner
Poured into a lager glass, the appearance was a murky copper color with a finger’s worth of white foamy head that held for a little bit and fell off at a good pace. Light stringy lace. The aroma had some light lemon rind bitterness playing with a little bit of hop spice and then delicate biscuit/bready malt base playing tightly to signature a fine blend all around. The flavor guided all of the previously mentioned aromatics together finely tuning the sweet to the spicy fairly nice. Aftertaste was moderately towards the biscuits and lemon. Finish was semi-smooth with a little bit of spice. The palate was between light and medium bodied with a fair sessionability about it. Carbonation felt fine. ABV felt good as projected. Overall, I didn’t mind this for me, but I did seem to think there was a bit more lemon than expected for the style.

Narragansett Bock (Helles)
Poured into a lager glass, the appearance was a semi-amber burnt almost copper color with a big rocky white foamy head that fell off at a mild pace. Stringy semi-foamy lace ended up sliding into the beer. The aroma had some caramel/toffee malts playing with a light biscuit/breadiness. Grassy to earthy hops flowing delicately underneath. The flavor was mainly malty with the hops not exactly playing a bit part in the overall taste. Aftertaste was malty with some metallic but really wasn’t too disheartening. Finish was semi-sticky yet acceptable. The palate was between light and medium bodied with a fair sessionability about it. Carbonation felt fine and somewhat low along with the ABV. Overall, if it wasn’t for the metallic character, I may have liked this a bit more.

Narragansett Lovecraft I Am Providence Imperial Red Ale
Can to snifter, the appearance was a ruddy burnt amber color with a cap of a little white foamy head that sustained and slid off at a good pace. Light lace. The aroma had some sweet clean caramel/toffee malts playing with a nice clean sweet grapefruit/citrusy hoppiness. Light pine slid in underneath. Then a little bit of tobacco/somewhat earthiness at the end. The flavor blended the prior mentioned aromas together somewhat gently - sweet to bitter to claim the aftertaste fairly nice in the ebb and flow along my taste buds. Finish was malty but clean and nice. The palate was medium bodied with a fair sipping quality about it. Carbonation felt good. ABV felt as projected. Some smoothness, but not quite as the hops do send some harshness along my tongue. Overall, now that’s a good American Strong ale. This was a bit of a surprise and of course I’d have this again.

Narragansett Autocrat Coffee Milk Stout
Poured into a nonic pint glass, the appearance was a milky dark brown close to black color with a thin cap of a little white foamy head that fell off fairly quick. Lace just slid right on off into the beer. The aroma had that Irish coffee creamer pretty bold and up front over top of some milk chocolate and light coffee roasty notes. The flavor was lenient to the sweet side and basically pounded the aftertaste with that Irish coffee creamer. The finish was sticky sweet. The palate was between light and medium bodied with some sessionability to crush as thought I hate to use this word, I have to admit yes, this one is ’watery.’ ABV did feel fine. Overall, and I thought Southern Tier’s mocha something or other was overly sweet, wow, uhhhhhh.....yeah, I wouldn’t do this one again.

Narragansett It’s About Time IPA
Draught at Worden Hall, 4/19/17.
Clear, bright golden-beeswax-yellow body shows good carbonation forming a small, modestly well-retained white head.
Light citrus in the nose redolent of meyer lemon, lime zest and a bit of white grapefruit is in turn joined by light pine, woody notes and finally bits of cereal and honey-like maltiness. It’s quite clean, doesn’t show a ton of juiciness, yet doesn’t show any real resin either. Obviously not meant to be a NE IPA but it still exhibits bright, not-overdone citrus with light nectarine/kumquat behind it. Rather malty for an IPA, not that there’s any strong caramel or crystal malt, but it achieves a good balance, preventing any pine/grapefruit from getting out-of-control.
Straightforward base malts in the mouth provide light cake and honey-like sweetness. Lightly juicy citrus with moderate bitterness helping balance the malt and a bit of cereal and other various grain-like notes toward the finish that add some more complexity. Clean, fairly dry and not too bitter with more grapefruit and light grassy character on the finish. Not exactly going to wow you, though I assume it wasn’t trying to. Just a very safe, but well-made and drinkable IPA. Texture is lightly malty to watery with moderate, somewhat loose carbonation.

Has a modest chocolate and toffee aroma. Black with just enough amber to be seen if held up to a light, The head has an exuberant start overflowing my glass but reluctantly settles to about a half inch. The head has a mild coffee milk appearance. The coffee taste has a bold start but is balanced out with hint of chocolate. Even with the bold dark coffee taste it does slide into a relatively light and clean finish.
