bottle. Pale golden with small head. Light with sweet pear juice, some really mild white wine barrel. Light earthy hops in the finish. The whole thing is really mild in flavor, one might say subtle, while another would say bland. I'm not entirely sure which camp I fall into.

bottle. Brown with small head. I'm not a coffee guy but this captures what I like about coffee -- the coffee bean flavor without the acidic nature. Some roast and light cocoa. Really good flavors. Interesting brew.

On draft at HopCat. The pour is a foggy golden yellow with a thick white head and a pretty solid lace. The aroma is definitely lemonade and a kiss of wheat. It’s really interesting and hammers home that I’m not crazy about shandys. The aroma is sweet and lemonade that rolls heavily into a wheat. The grain and wheat control and the sweetness from the lemonade doesn’t do it for me. The flavor is much of the same. Sweet lemonade and a heavy wheat addition. The mouth feel is watery and light bodied with a messy carbonation and a lingering wheaty lemon finish. No thanks.

Wolverine State Vers L'avant
12 ounce bottle into lager glass, bottled on 4/7/2017. Pours fairly crystal clear medium golden yellow color with a 1 finger dense off white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of pear, white wine, oak, cracker, and white bread; with lighter notes of vanilla, pepper, and herbal/grassy earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance of pale malt, pears, wine barrel, and light earthy hop notes; with solid strength. Taste of pear, white wine, oak, cracker, and white bread; with lighter notes of vanilla, pepper, and herbal/grassy earthiness. Light herbal/grassy bitterness and wine/oak tannin spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of pear, white wine, oak, cracker, white bread, vanilla, pepper, and herbal/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice robustness and balance of pale malt, pears, wine barrel, and light earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/bitter/spiciness balance, and zero astringent flavors after the finish. Perfectly clean on lager flavors, with zero yeast notes present. Light dryness from bitterness and tannic spiciness, increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately bready/grainy, and lightly sticky/tannic balanced mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 5.5%. Overall this is a delicious pale lager style. All around nice robustness and balance of pale malt, pears, wine barrel, and light earthy hop flavors; very smooth, clean, and easy to drink. Pretty simple, but on point for execution. Very balanced between clean pils malt, pears, and wine barrels; with just enough earthy hops to round it out. A very enjoyable offering.

Bottle served in a glass, this beer was a clear light to less than medium gold in the glass with some faint orange hue, the pour presented a white cover that was almost a finger thick, it left nice spots and small fingers of lacing on the side of the glass, the nose had aromas of chardonnay wine (light fruit), notes of pear and peach skin, light malt, white wine, faint grass hops that had a bit of a earth note, a little vanilla in the background, and light fruit sweetness, the flavors were pear fruit and wine, light malt, a little hops and wood (barrel aging), very faint vanilla, and a little sweetness, the finish had a less than medium hop bitterness and there was a dryness left on the mouth, the mouth feel was light, it was creamy and had soft to average carbonation, there was a nice crispness to this drink, I thought the lager, chardonnay barrel and pear mixed pretty well, usually, I find lager and fruit sort of off, too sweet and do not like it, this drink was a little interesting and good, the carbonation was softer than your typical lager probably because of the aging in the chardonnay barrels, I found the chardonnay to be out front just a bit leaving the lager and pear still noticeable, I thought this was a nice drink.

From notes. The appearance was a deep brown color with a tan foamy two finger head that slid off at a mild pace. Light stringy lace. The aroma had some dark bread, dark fruits, some roasted nuts, earthy and grassy hops, sweet oats, and a light toffee at the end. The flavor blended fairly well between all of the previously mentioned aromas sweetly. Aftertaste was bready sweet along with the dark fruits. Finish was smooth and sweet. The palate was between light and medium bodied. Somewhat sessionable as the ABV wasn’t quite noticeable to the build of the beer. Only after consumption I saw the ABV and thought to myself, was it really 9.5%? Overall, I liked this one a lot for me but have to think that’s one smooth doppelbock along with the crushable aspect going on.

Poured into a lager glass, the appearance was a deep copper color with a finger’s worth of white foamy head that fell off at a mild pace. Some stringy lace. The aroma had some caramel malts, nuts, dark fruits, dark bread, light cocoa powder with some grassy and earthy hops. The flavor matched the aroma fairly nice blending the sweet to the hops nicely. Light aftertaste of the dark bread and malts. Same in the finish. The feel was roughly medium bodied with a decent sessionability about it. Good carbonation. ABV felt appropriate. Overall, pretty nice bock that I’d have again.

Reviewed from notes. The appearance was a somewhat dark amber color with a small off white foamy head. Mild dissipation and left some messy lace. The aroma had some grainy sweetness, light toffee. Some grassy semi-bitter hops, but fairly delicate with some citrusy effects. The flavor had a sturdy bitterness coming about somewhat pulling down that grainy sweetness. Mild aftertaste of the same with a semi-sticky sweet finish. The feel was about medium bodied, perhaps just a touch under with a decent sessionability about it. Carbonation felt fine. ABV felt fine. Overall, India pale lager? I guess. Would I have this again? Maybe when I’m back in Michigan. But nothing to seek and destroy on a daily basis.

Reviewed from notes. The appearance was a semi-dark copper color with a film of a little white foamy head. No lace. The aroma had some toast, toffee/caramel malts, some chestnuts and apples. The flavor was towards the sweet side with a developing little bit of dark fruit playing with the apple sweetness. Decently blended aftertaste rolling into the finish. The feel was just a tad under than medium bodied with a decent sessionability about it. Good carbonation and the ABV felt appropriate. Overall, I’d have this again during football season if I lived in Michigan. I didn’t mind this beer one bit.

12 oz bottle. Quiet pour with minimal carbonation and a bourbon, dark fruit, and molasses aroma. The beer has an opaque dark colour with a thin tan head and fair lace. It has a bourbon start with hints of dark fruit expanding into the middle. The finish is long with sweet notes of molasses, only a faint hint of hops, and an extended warm alcohol glow at the end. Lager mouthfeel.

Aromas bread and sour fruit. A little caramel. Color is a fairly dark amber with a small off-white head. Taste is just slightly sour; sweetness is medium despite the candi sugar used in the brewing; bitterness is light to medium. Carbonation is medium to just a touch lively, which works well with this beer. Finish is medium length with some sour fruit and candi sugar. Not bad; it’s a bit different than most beers; I find the little bit of sourness interesting. While not especially complex it is a bit intriguing.
