The Commons Urban Farmhouse Ale
Clear light golden with a lasting thick white fluffy head. Dry farmhousey dusty hay on the nose with a kiss of black peppercorn and light fruit skin. Crisp pale malt flavor that’s Belgian ish and dry and slightly funky, clean, a touch peppery, and a light fruity pale malt finish. Clean and elegant and simple, but delicate and pale malty.

The Commons Urban Farmhouse Ale
Big bottle from Mile High. This beer has a barely hazy gold body with a gigantic, pillowy white head. It sure looks like a real Belgian beer. Incredible funky, peppery, fruity, barnyard aroma wafts from the tulip glass. A kiss of pilsner malt rounds out things with a light, spicy hoppiness. The mouthfeel is smooth and spritzy. Excellent yeast character continues in the flavor with suggestions of pineapple, pepper, and hay. A semi-sweet malt body gives impressions of cracker, but dries out quickly. This is an expert saison that goes beyond just your average American take on the style. Everything from the mouthfeel to the nuances in the yeast character clearly shows attention to detail.

The Commons Myrtle
170517. On tap at The Catfish in Fitzroy. This is my first beer from this brewery and I had this as part of an Portland brewery tap takeover during Good Beer Week. Very good sour ale with plenty of funky tartness up front and it carries all the way to the finish. Light in colour with a small head that quickly vanishes. Sour fruit aroma with a touch of vinegar thrown in for good measure – surprisingly smells pretty good. Thin in the mouth which I what I was expecting. Long dry finish.

The Commons / Grains of Wrath Pay No Attention To This IPA
16-oz cans. Pours a cloudy bright pale yellowish gold with a light fizzy whitish head that goes away fairly quickly. Big tangy sweet nose, showing lots of mango and guava along with plenty of pineapple and orange. Creamy medium body with lively carb. Lightly toasted caramel along with plenty of tropical fruits on the palate, balancing out with some lemon zest and a little bit of white pepper near the finish. Long dry aftertaste with some fruit pith. Really refreshing and delicious.

The Commons Walnut Belgo-Porter
Pours dark brown, bit of beige foam on the top, more like a skirmish though. Aroma has some roast, little sourness and burnt malts. Taste has more acidity, feels actually quite sour, with this burnt rye bread in the background, together with some - yes again - nail polish. Relatively weak body, roast is strong and lots of chocolate, bitter and not sweet, wheat adding these sour notes. Overall interesting, not sure I want to drink a lot of it though.

Hazy, pale. Thin head. The aroma is mellow, actually. Gingery on the palate, touch of pale malt. Good balance. The malts are a touch flabby and that makes it finish weak but there’s good here.

The Commons Petite Classique
Pale yellow, slightly cloudy pour with fine white, smooth foam that lasts. Fruity musty nose right from the start. Some sharp spice and bready malt in the background and maybe a whiff of tartness. Medium body, sharp on the tongue with active fizz and a slightly sour white wine finish. The peppercorn catches up as the beer warms, strongest in the end. Mineral notes evoke the Dupont style. Very refreshing and drinkable at 4.1% ABV. The flavors are complex, with the pepper and the mineral notes combining well, but the malt and oatmeal give it a smoothness that mutes the stronger elements. It’s a wallflower of a saison, but it’s worth inviting onto the dance floor.
