Grey Sail Captain’s Daughter
12oz can from Paradise Wine & Spirits in Old Saybrook with a 7/24/2017 can date. 2 weeks fresh! Pour is pale yellowish-orange - a hazy ipa color without the full hazy-ness. Head is off-white with a lot of streaky lace. Aroma has big tropical and citrus fruit. Pineapple. Mango. Oranges. Light sweet malts, some candied fruits. Lovely up-front hoppy nose. Taste is more candied fruity, citrus, tropical with melon and papaya, some sweet malts. Tangy and candied. A bit over-dry hopped presence adding depth. Medium bodied or maybe even less, surprising for a DIPA, with constant carbonation, a smooth solid blend and a touch of an alcohol burn. Finishes sweeter than bittersweet and tangy candied fruity. An unexpected combination comes through solidly well. Perhaps a touch too sweet with the candied fruit presence, or could be great. 15.8

Pretty bland. What flavor there is is mostly grain, and there’s what seems to be a mild off taste which I can’t quite describe at the end. Won’t buy this one again.

Grey Sail Pour Judgement IPA
Here’s a beer that is identifiably on the hoppy spectrum, perhaps an APA or an IPA one might say, but laced with that East Coast sensibility by which there’s citrus that isn’t in-your-face grapefruit, and it is juicy but still resonant with malts. Fine drinking. Hits heavier at 6.5%. On tap at Bidwell Tavern, Coventry, CT.

12-ounce can pours cloudy straw-yellow with one-inch-thick off-white, whipped cream head and lacing. Aroma: citrus medley (all the usual Citra hop scent and taste characteristics that you’d expect), pine, floral. Flavor: pineapple, mango, passion fruit, grapefruit, kiwi fruit, orange, toffee, pine resins. Mouthfeel: medium-to full-bodied, lingering bittersweetness. Deceptively drinkable with so much alcohol. Personally, I prefer this to Heady Topper, which I find overly astringent from their hop cocktail. This beer is not so.

Grey Sail Flying Jenny Extra Pale Ale
Poured into a becher pint glass, the appearance was a hazy bronzed copper color with a finger’s worth of white foamy head that fell off at a moderate pace. Sly messy lace. The aroma had some smooth soft citrusy hops a bit sweeter than expected with barely any bitterness. Malts seem somewhat smooth and sweet too. The flavor was a bit sweeter than I thought it would be, still acceptable, as there’s nothing really off. Aftertaste was a blend of the sweetness of the hops and malts. Finish was malty. The palate was between light and medium bodied with a fair sessionability about it. Carbonation felt good. ABV felt appropriate. Overall, pretty decent APA, maybe a bit old school or perhaps an old can, not sure, there wasn’t a date on the can.

Poured into a mug, the appearance was a pale yellow color with a finger’s worth of white foamy head that slid off at a moderate pace. Sly lace. The aroma had some Belgian yeasty to bready malts. Light coriander, some clove, sly grassy hop tones, and a little bit of citrusy sweet to bitter quality. The flavor was moderately sweet with a sturdy spice background playing with the Belgian yeast/breadiness. Aftertaste had some of the sweetness and the spice. Finish was fair as it had a decent sweet breadiness with a slight clove. The palate was between light and medium bodied with a good sessionability about it. Carbonation felt fine. ABV felt appropriate. Overall, pretty nice Americanized witbier that I could come back to.

Can to lager glass, the appearance was a golden crisp color with a finger’s worth of white foamy head that slid off at a moderate pace. Trickling lace. The aroma had some sweet corn blending with some grassy and piney hops. Little bit of hop spice at the very end flowing over some bready malts. The flavor was moderately sweet with the hop spice coming in and allowing some bitterness riding along to flow on into the aftertaste and finish. The palate was between light and medium bodied with a good sessionability about it. Carbonation felt fine. ABV felt fine. Overall, pretty good India pale lager. I’d have again.

Surprising how well the very dank (onion and basement) presence works with the dry grassy pilsner malt. Nice touch of grapefruit, kiwi and pine. Lookout the 8.5% is well masked due to the complexity. Very enjoyable but a bit different than the first one I had three days ago from another four pack.

Grey Sail Leaning Chimney Smoked Porter
Poured into a becher pint glass, the appearance was a dark brown color with a light off white foamy head that holds it’s own as it dissipated. Light messy foamy lace. The aroma started with a dried grassy hoppiness. Then some peat and subtle smoke. Robust dark malts. The flavor leans towards the smoke with an ample amount of blended peat to grassiness really gripping my taste buds in a ruggedly dry fashion. Some slight meatiness comes in as it warms. Ends up pushing into the aftertaste and on into the finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a fair sipping quality about it. Low carbonation. ABV felt appropriate. Overall, took a little bit but the sweet to smokey flavor only came out as it warmed. Maybe again.

Shared 16 oz. can poured to snifters showing a black/brown hue, with abundant, tan froth, and spots & ribbons of foamy lacing. The nose was roasted, chocolate, malt, and woodiness, with a slight scent of fels naptha-like soapiness. Medium bodied, with low carbonation, the taste retained a bit of the soapiness, presented more of the expected peat smoke, along with roasted & earthy bitterness. Washed out some in the texture, and finished dry.

Very tasty stuff. I?ve had a couple Grey Sails before but this one is wonderful. Reminds me of some of the better Ontario IPAs in style. Lots of grapefruit and tangerine with tiny not of pine that makes this prickly like, well, a pine cone... Wonderful mix. Cloudy orange pour with good head and lacing. Light bitter finish. Growler from Milk and Hops, Chelsea. Unclear golden-orange color with a thin white head and some spotty streaks of lace on the glass. Aroma comes off a little much diacetyl. Makes it difficult for me to pick out the other components, but I got a little fruit, grass, and spice. Light sweet, with a clean medium bitterness. Taste is less flawed than the nose. Clean, medium body, light dry on the close. Drinks like a much less than 8.5℅ beer. Actually quite like the mouthfeel of this one, even if the aroma and flavor feel flawed. I might have to try this one again (maybe the canned version instead of the draft) to see if this is what it is usually like, because the other reviews seem much better.
