Ruddles Best (Bottle, Can & Keg)
23rd June 2017. Found a 500ml clear bottle of this (BB May 2018) at the back of my fathers fridge. Really surprised I have never rated it before, cask yes, bottle format, no. Anyway it’s a reddy amber in colour and has a fast fading beige head. Malty molasses (mostly caramel like) rule the nose and taste, slight herbal twist in both the aroma and flavour. Bog standard English Bitter really, not the best, but certainly not the worst.

Craft Academy Bitter Sweet Black IPA
Bottle from the Grain & Hop Store, Cambridge. Cola brown, translucent. A bit of off-white head and reasonable lacing. Metal in the aroma. A bit of liquorice and chocolate but the metallic smell overpowers. Man this smells filtered to high heaven. Taste is... not bad. Great actually. Bittersweet with chocolate fudge weighing on the tongue. Finish is incredibly bitter, bordering on astringent. Heavily carbonated. Ok, it’s tasty. But it’s not a BIPA (haven’t marked it down for that), more like a stout/porter. And it’s got this artificial character I just can’t shake. I think the lads and lasses from the Craft Academy need to study harder.

Morland Old Speckled Hen (Filtered)
Had this from a bottle. When I poured part of it there was not much of a head on it, it had a reasonable bit of carbonation. The Colour is light/orangey brown. The smell is caramel, may be a bit of brown sugar. Quite a sweet initial taste to it, a bit of a tangy taste sits on the tongue after the gulp of beer, the malts really come through in the after taste. Pretty solid beer to be fair, from what I remember it is nice from the can as well (and on cask).

Greene King Strong Suffolk (Olde Suffolk)
330 mL bottle, I think shared by ebone1988. Him and the damn book. The pour is a clear medium brown color with a little garnet shining through and a light khaki head that falls to a ring, leaving a decent couple pieces of lace. The aroma had a good caramel and fruitiness to it. There is a lot of bready malts and a light influence of oak. It’s got a decent bit going on, but it’s not deep or complex at all, which is what I’ve come to expect from an old ale. The flavor is just about what you’d expect from the aroma. There is a caramel and bready malt, a light oakiness and a dry fruitiness. There is a little bit of a sweetness on the back, but it’s light and messy. The mouth feel is decently bodied with a softer carbonation and a lingering caramel and a light charred malt on the finish. It’s pretty decent, but not quite what I’ve come to want and expect. 7 4 6 3 13

Greene King Double Hop Monster (Bottle / Keg)

Taste is rounded malts, twiggy with some apple-like yeast character, touch of rhubarb maybe. Ok. (5-4-6-4-13 = 3.2)

Bottle at Station, West Byfleet. Nothing else left to try so was left with this. Floral grassy yeasty aroma - almost lager-esque. Dark gold. Creamy but thin white head, Bubbly. Initially sweet and malty before a hoppy spiced bitterness makes a half-hearted appearance. Light bodied. Watery. Lively Carbonation. Abrupt finish. The blurb on the bottle refers to, bold American pale ales, but that is was off the mark. Bland and bland gets.
