Shared a 473ml can at RBAG ’17. Deep golden with a thin white head. Nose - sweet malt, caramel and pine. Taste - medium malts with pine hops and a nice finishing bitterness. Not as juicy as the name suggests but I enjoyed it.

Bottle, from NSLC in Fall River. Pours a deep golden with a tight white head. Aroma is honey and florals with soft fruity undertones. Sweet honey malts, with tea-like perfumey notes, peaches, and a bit of mint on the finish. Moderately bitter. Interesting.

Garrison 20th Anniversary XXX IPA
Bottle, shared at Neil and Gloria’s lake house. Medium orange amber, clear, with a dense creamy off white head that leaves solid rings of lace as I make my way through the glass. Sweet fruity toffee aroma, equally malty and hoppy. Sweet malty palate, verging on sticky, with abundant resinous hops, undertones of tropical fruit, with a long bitter finish. Walking the line right between a malty IIPA or a hoppy BW, this is a well made Strong Ale no matter what you choose to call it.

341ml bottle pours a golden colour with a finger of white head that leaves some decent lacing on the glass. Aroma is citrus with some grains. Taste is a citrus hop bitterness with a light malty sweetness. Light bodied with good carbonation. Overall, a decent brew for the style, but lacking in the fuller flavours of other session IPA’s

Garrison Tall Ship Amber
Can. Clear golden amber pour with no head. I’ve been enjoying a lot of Garrison beers lately, but wow, this is not great. Grainy malt, a little metallic... Really don’t like this. Boring and bad even for an amber.

Garrison Juicy! Double IPA
Can. Clear pale orange in colour with medium carbonation. Aromas are of mango, exotic citrus fruit, and chives. Fairly tropical on the palate, but it’s the raw hop grassiness that really stands out. Additional notes of cut pine and light pale malt as well. Fairly heavy (slightly oily) mouthfeel, but with enough carbonation and bitterness to compensate. Not all that "North East" given it’s clarity and grassiness, but still a solid double IPA.

Garrison Juicy! Double IPA
Can. Clear amber pour with a thick white head. Aroma is bright tropical and citrus fruit, subtle resinous notes as well, really nice. Taste is tropical fruit, resin, slight citrus, some sweetness, slight bitterness, quite flavourful. Not quite the thick, cloudy fruit bomb I would expect from a self-proclaimed NE IPA, but still really nice. Rich, fruity, juicy and bright from the hops without tons of bitterness in the taste. Just wish it was actually unfiltered like it says on the can... This is weirdly clear.

Garrison Red Shirt Ale
Bottle via BreWedge. Amber in colour with medium carbonation. Aromas are of bready malts, caramel and mild citrus. Flavors are of caramel, black pepper, sweet orange and whole wheat bread dough. Heavy bodied, but not overly cloying. Old school North American pub amber, in a comforting way.

Garrison Hoppy Buoy American Style IPA
Bottle. Hazy gold in colour with medium carbonation. Aromas are of pine resin, pale malt, and lemon sweet tea. Flavors of sweet pale malt, pine needles, mellow white grapefruit, underbrush, and white pepper. Very old school piney and sharp citrus for me, with none of the tropical elements that were advertised.

Garrison Juicy! Double IPA
A good beer, yet largely unexceptional. Pours a nice pale amber, oddly clear for an unfiltered IPA. Nice head, not much lacing. Smell is mostly pine, with some tropical fruits mixed in. Taste is similar. Classic IPA flavours are balanced by a nice fruity-malty backbone. Palate is thin, but just a little syrupy. Nothing too special about this beer. Good for a summer’s day if you’re into drinking 8.0% ABV beers as session ales lol. Poured from a can into that Heineken glass. Maybe if I read the instructions on the can, which say, DRINK FROM THE CAN, my revirw might be different. Gonna have to make a trip to Garrison to find out why this beer’s supposed to be drunk from a can.

Bottle. Cloudy golden pour with a white head, good retention. Aroma is lots of tropical fruit with slight herbal notes. Taste is sweet up front, lots of tropical fruit, a little citrus and herbal bitterness at the end but not a great balance. Lots of hops and some nice flavours, but doesn’t come together very nicely.

Garrison Sugar Moon Maple Ale
Thanks, microakes! Has a bright amber colour, though not much head. Has a light maple nose, but on the palate it’s just a bit snappy, touch of maple, with a light crackery character. These are all fairly typical maple beer characteristics, but they are well-balanced and integrated with the base beer. Still sold not on maple beer conceptually though - those characteristics aren’t necessarily what I desire in a beer.

Appearance: clear red-tinged amber with two fingers of fluffy beige head, good retention and moderate lacing. (4/5) Aroma: mild, citrus, caramel, floral, earth. (7/10) Taste: moderate sweet, moderate bitter. (7/10) Palate: medium body, moderate carbonation, lingering bitter finish. (3/5) I was more than halfway hoping I’d get to make a joke about this being spelled with one too many R’s, but it’s actually not bad. The hopping stops short of being aggressive but is certainly present, though more on the tongue than the nose. A bit more emphasis on dry hopping would push this into world-class territory pretty handily - which, for a Red, is no mean feat. (14/20) 7/10 #ryansbooze ryansbooze.com

Aroma is caramel with some citrus and earthy tones with some cereal grains. Taste is a citrus and earthy bitterness with a caramel malty sweetness. Slight grainy mouth feel. Light to medium bodied with good carbonation. Overall, this brew has substance and flavour, not a gimmicky brew. Recommended for trekkies who are also beer lovers.

This has been sitting for a while. 2010 Still great. Pours dirty brown cola with small carbonation in the pour but settles out. Aroma is sweet caramel and toffee with raisin and grapes. Taste is still a little alcohol burn but it is very smooth and blends well with the raisin, grape and a little fig. Caramel and toffee sweetness. Really nice beer.

Bottle. Clear reddish-brown pour with a thick, creamy light tan head. Aroma is malty caramel, a little earthy, subtle citrus, biscuit notes as it warms, slightly metallic. Labelled as Garrison Red Shirt. Dark red boy, off-white head, nice lacing. Sweet fruity malty aroma, tropical fruit hops. A touch of bubblegum. Taste is rich, on the sweet side, but definitely has a subtle dry (I wouldn’t say bitter), balance to it. As an APA it’s kind of odd. As a red ale, it’s better than average.

Appearance: Pours a slightly hazy, orange hued body that turns a deep brown as the rest of the bottle is poured. Murky and hazy as an unfiltered beer should be. Big 3 finger head sits atop. Smell: Citrus, pine and a healthy dose of hops that aren’t forceful but nice. A little sweetness in there also. Taste: A good hop bite though not as strong as it might have been. Ripe grapefruit with an earthen feel to it. A little mellow in taste with a certain spice-like feel in the finish. Though not as aggressive as it should be, i found the taste quite enjoyable regardless. Mouthfeel: A nice lasting bitterenss that is felt everywhere in the palate and lasts long after the sip. Good carbonation with a solid body. Good balance between astringency and smoothness.

Garrison Wintervention Chocolate Imperial Stout
650ml bottle pours almost black in color with a finger of light beige head that leaves some spotted lacing on the glass. Aroma is chocolate and light roasted grains with some hints of vanilla and alcohol. Taste is a chocolate malty sweetness with a light roasted grain bitterness with some vanilla and alcohol in the finish. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Overall, a little thin in the body and a little too sweet for a stout, otherwise a decent brew.

Appearance: clear brown with one fat finger of light beige head, good retention and lacing. (4/5) Aroma: chocolate nibs, coffee, dark roasty malt, light nutty. (7/10) Taste: moderate sweet, moderate-high bitter. (7/10) Palate: medium slightly slick body, moderate carbonation, off-dry moderate bitter and mildly warming finish. (3/5) Well, I’m not sure: is this the same recipe as their Wintervention? I don’t think it’s identical, but it sure seems similar. To be fair, this has been aged for two years, compared to the fairly newborn Wintervention I tried yesterday. Certainly, this has none of the wet dog aroma I got from the Wintervention, and the palate is just slightly fuller. That being said, it would benefit from a more robust body and finish. The ageing seems to have mellowed it out somewhat, if nothing else, presenting it in its best possible form. Which is good, but not great. I’ll keep my other one in the cellar for another couplethree years and see what happens. (14/20)

Garrison Wintervention Chocolate Imperial Stout
Appearance: near opaque black with brown highlights at the margins, medium dense light beige head diminishing gradually to a thin cap, moderate lacing. (4/5) Aroma: chocolate nibs, coffee, dark roasty malt, light nutty, hint of wet dog. (6/10) Taste: moderate sweet, moderate-high bitter. (7/10) Palate: medium slightly slick body dropping off to watery, moderate carbonation, off-dry moderate bitter and mildly warming finish. (3/5) “It’s 20º below, dark at 4 o’clock & the holidays are over… Time for a Wintervention!” Indeed. I honestly don’t know how many more Canadian winters I can stand, but double digit ABVs might hold the key to increasing that number. Marginally. Except, funny thing, even though the ABV for this is well integrated and manifests only as a mild warming, the body is surprisingly thin. Given the somewhat enthusiastic flavours and alcohol load on this one, I’d expect (and prefer) a thicker body, but this almost feels like a (fairly anemic) porter. Warming doesn’t really improve this, either - as I noted above, there’s actually a hint of wet dog that actually starts to come to the fore, once you let this sit for a bit, so I find myself in the fairly unique position of recommending you don’t drink this Imperial Stout too warm. I’m actually surprised this isn’t better than their Martello Stout, but given this is nearly double the price per millilitre, I’d say drink two Martellos instead. On the up side, it’s not too sweet, so there’s that. (13/20)

Hazy copper brownish color with dense activity. Creamy beige 2 finger head, lasting around 10 minutes, with faint legs. Flavors of butter, caramel, liquorice, dark malts, burnt sugar, banana yeast, ginger, nutmeg, herbal spices. Sugary bread feel with red ale spices and sharp yeast. Oily full body with prickly and soft crispy carbonation. Medium strength finish, lingering smoky rye malts with butterscotch and gingerbread feel, and thick banana residues. The flavors are decent but numb and are quickly overwhelmed by the finish, while not excessive and well balanced, still feels faint and slightly watery, thus making it a bit dull and lacking freshness by also being too heavy on the tongue. Although the finish is very rich and of high quality. I’ve always though the Klingons drank stuff harder than this. With some tweaking this cloud be a very good product. Overall good quality craft.
