The beer looks very nice. The color of the beer is a nice golden yellow. The beer looks very clear, but some particles can be seen in strong light. On top of the beer a nice layer of soft white foam, quite rough, is formed. The bulk of the foam collapses quite quickly. A very thin drape of foam is left. The smell of the beer is nice. It is my first Bière de Garde and I already like it. It has some Belgian blonde things in it and some extra hops. The beer is very gentle, but very nice. I smell some nice gentle malts, giving some sweeter notes. Besides this there are some fruity and bitter hop aroma’s, containing some citrus touches. It reminds me a bit of some of the Leffe Royal beers. There is also some alcohol in there, and some woody things. The taste of the beer is also nice. I taste some nice fruit flavours, with some hoppy bitterness and malty fruitiness. There are also some wood touches. It is a nice strong aroma, with delicate fruits. The balance between robust and delicate is quite nice. It is a special beer type, but I’m sure I’ll drink it more often. The palate is also good. Medium body, smooth, medium carbonation. The finish is long, slowly fading and contains some alcohol. Lovely.

Bottle from Lidl. Bargain 12 packtastic. Slightly pedestrian Blonde, but it’s not all bad. Sweet, honeyed notes. Treacle and apple pie, ladled onto generous cardboard.

Bottle from Lidl. Great value are all of these. Very pale colour, but still has that Blanche/Wit prettiness. Taste is a let down: over sweet, over lemony, like a tart. Flat cardboard underbelly. Little to distinguish it. Pretty poor.

750ml. Caramel ,caramel and maybe a bit too much Caramel. Aren’t Biere de garde’s meant to be rustic and farmy funky ? . All I really got was a very malty caramel and butterscotch texture and a somewhat fruit estery (orange , dried apple ) character . The bier was also headless after like two seconds in my Cantillon glass.

750ml; I bought a few 750mls of this beer after stopping @ Lidl needin to desperatley use a nearby toilet a few weeks ago while driving . I don’t shop @ Lidl unless 1) They have a limited run of boozy Belgian giftpacks or 2) I happen to be killing two birds with a stone , needing the crapper and then in my mind facetiously being like .."lets see what beer "gems" they have in today" . I like the Witbier style and so was happy to locate this beer in a strange location ..between frozen welfare pizza and cheap Polish meads. This beer was or is , spicy , orange peel textured , dry and lighly crisp. The type of 750ml beer that could be sank in 5 miniutes on a sunny summers morning .

Bottle from Lidl. Bargain. Pale gold, thin bubbles, angelic short white top. One dimensional strong ale. Thin, tangy booze, with sticky, cheap white wine feel. Ok, but a low ranking Tripel.

Aroma: citrus and herbs notes (you can already feel an alcohol premiere). Appearance; Golden color with hazy liquid and minimal white head. Taste: Light sweet/bitter notes and light sourness Palate: Medium body with oily liquid and flat carbonation. Alcoholic long finish. Overall: Not the first french beer that gives me that alcoholic feeling. There are stronger beers that hide the alcohol much better.

Aroma: Medium cereal notes Appearance: Golden color with a light hazy liquid and a white head. Taste: Medium sweetness and a light bitter touch. Palate: Medium body with a pretty oily texture and average carbonation. Bitter short finish. Overall: I liked the bottle (33cl), so I bought it not expecting too much but I got a sweet surprise. The sweet touches without the feeling of too much alcohol has been a first and something to remember. The finish leaves a short memory (maybe the weakest point).

Taste from bottle at All Points North tasting Edinburgh. Appearance - golden with a decent head. Nose - light lemon and bread. Taste - more of the same. Palate - light bodied with a creamy texture and a fairly good finish. Overall - not ipa in the modern sense. Lacked the fruity high points you’d expect.

Abbaye de Vauclair Blanche
Bottle, from Lidl. Hazy lemon gold, thin but lasting white head, moderate condition. Muted sherberty lemon citrus and faint corriander spice in the nose, quite thin and dry in the mouth with an even more restrained citrus note mingled with a little graininess. Some gentle lemon lingers briefly in the finish though that is replaced by a final dry spiciness. A cross between a blanche and a blonde. A blande.

Can - clear pale yellow, initial white head soon disappears, from high carbonation. Lemony aroma, slight ting on tongue, otherwise quite smooth. Little body to taste, bit thin and watery. Nothing much here, but easy drinking.

February 2016. Alive with funky banana, clove, Anna’s Swedish biscuits and rabbit hutch hay midway between American wheat and kristallweizen. It’s basically a turbo charged kristall for the park bench engendering a funky buzz fast. I like it enormously. Tufting lager looks. High banana and fresh hay nose. Sometimes I forget why I like beer, this reminds me why.

Gayant La Goudale
Review: 50cl Can of La Goudale Biere: ABV: 7.2% Coming in a very interesting shiny can that had a lot of distinctive black lettering. Stands out, even if its not obvious what exactly it all means! On appearance got a hazy amber orange colour that produced a pretty large frothy white head, which does die over time but maintains overall, albeit small. Some lacing. Nothing special to look at. Smells of caramel and the usual blond aroma of yeasts, sweet malts, grains and with a bit of citrus, nothing special. No hanging around with this beer, on initial taste you can immediately get the alcohol, straight in with an aggressive taste………lots of yeast and citrus lightning up the taste-buds! But no real discernible after taste. All in the front taste. Not nice, too harsh on the palate. Very bitter. Fuck me, its hard. Disgusting even! Second can much more manageable. Deep tasting hops. Sweet Malts Tastes much better. A slow burner. Creamy bodied In the end I kind of liked it, don’t know if the alcohol kicks in and the initial shock with the first can but it was ok, albeit the second can, similar to a Belgian strong pale ale.

The more recent amber coloured version (since 2015) of the classic blonde Goudale, one of the more popular and well-known bières de garde from northern France. From a 75 cl bottle, coming from an Auchan supermarket. Thick and frothy, snow white, stable head over a clear, lightly coppery-hued, deep amber coloured beer. Aroma of hazelnut butter, soap, dried banana, turnip, dried apricot, raw carrot, iron, toasted bread, almonds. Sweet onset, banana and peach with a sourish redcurrant touch but residual white sugar lingers as well, soapy and slightly oily mouthfeel with a faint metallic ’sound’ to it; caramelly malt sweetness with very mildly bittering toasty edges. Soapiness persists through the finish with an earthy hop touch and vague alcohol warmth, but the sweetness lasts the longest. Clean and therefore rather ’bland’ Belgo-French ale, typical bière de garde ambrée, nothing wrong here but frankly a bit boring - yet still better than the original one to my taste.

Bottle from Lidl. Clean golden colour, big white head dies down, but lasts well. As expected, this is sweet, there are odd, quite sugary, notes on the long finish, with a very faint hoppy bitterness creeping in at the end. Overall, taking the price into account, this is OK!

330 ml. bottle split by 2. Clear golden, unstable white head. Nose is cooked vegetables, bad pale lager, very metallic, watery in a mineral way. Taste is metallic, unpleasantly oily, corn, cooked vegetables are slightly more in background, plastic, vegetable oil,... Body is watery in mineral water fashion, metallic,... Unpleasant overly industrial beer. Very disappointing.
