Hyde Park Brewing Company Reviews

Hyde Park Maibock
Reviewed from notes. The appearance was a milky yellow to copper color with a slim cap of a white foamy head that fell off into oblivion. No lace. The aroma had some soft sweet bready malts, somewhat like dough, gentle grassy hoppiness, not necessarily bitter, just there. The flavor was lightly sweet with a fair wet doughy aftertaste and finish. The feel was almost medium bodied but sat just a tad under. Felt fairly smooth along my tongue. Overall, I didn’t mind this for me, but then again I just expected it to be a normal hellerbock and nothing more than that.

Hyde Park Chaos Dry Stout
Reviewed from notes. The appearance was a dark red/brown color with a finger’s worth of white foamy head that fell off at a moderate pace. Light stringy lace. The aroma had some roasty coffee beans up front, pretty bold and ended with some earthy hop dryness. The flavor was dry and roasty through the coffee beans. Super dry coffee aftertaste and finish. The feel was about medium bodied, maybe a touch under with a decent sessionability about it. Light carbonation. ABV felt appropriate. Overall, pretty nice dry stout, worthy of having again.

Hyde Park Barrel 9 Irish Brown Ale
Reviewed from notes. The appearance was a fairly dark red almost brown color with a finger’s worth of white foamy head that fell off at a moderate pace. Light stringy sliding lace. The aroma had some mild roast with some nuts, light dough, banana and earthiness, somewhat like leather. The flavor did a decent job of blending the prior mentioned aromas together fairly nice. Sly aftertaste of banana, nuts and earth. Finishes fairly quick. The feel was about medium bodied with a decent sessionability about it. Mild carbonation. Good ABV. Overall, nice enough brown ale worthy of more pours for me if I could get it again even though where did that banana come from, different, and unsure if it was intentional.

Hyde Park Chaos Dry Stout
Sampled at Tap NY 2015, 4/25/15
This is a fairly simple stout, with dark brown pour and the dark/roast malt components you’d expect. It’s just fine, but there just isn’t a ton here.

Draught @ Brewpub: This one pours a pale yellow. There was almost no white head and no lacing. The aroma is lighter: malts and some adjuncts. The taste is OK, but certainly nothing to write home about. Some malts and earthy notes.

Hyde Park Winkle Lager
Draught @ Brewery: This one pours a clear, light golden color. There was a very small white head and almost no lacing. The aroma is mild. Some malts, maybe some floral hops. The taste was definitely light. Some malts, floral hops, and an aftertaste I couldn’t quite figure out.

Hyde Park Rough Rider Red Lager
Draught @ Brewpub: This one pours a fairly clear amber color. There was no head or lacing. It has a lighter aroma. Mainly caramel malts. Anything else? I couldn’t tell. The taste is a bit malty sweet. No hops to speak of. Not well balanced at all.

Hyde Park Von Schtupps Dark Lager
Draught @ Brewpub: This one pours an opaque, very dark brown color. There was a very small tan head, and almost no lacing. It has a lighter aroma. Chocolate malt and earthy notes. The taste is decent enough, but a little light. Roasted chocolate malts and a hint of bitterness. Decent enough.

Hyde Park Mary Ps Porter
Tap at Brewery. Color was deep brown, like a porter should be. Aroma was weak, not the strong tones of coffee, or smokey. Smooth and not heavy, which I liked. It makes for a very easy session beer. Flavor was better, but more like an ale than a porter. Not a strong beer for its class, but I have had far worse.

A: Deep Amber/Orangish Hue, Passes Through Some Light, Mild Light Brown Head Ring, Some Lacing S: Sweet Malts, Caramel T: Caramel, Toffee, Malty M: Mild Carbonation, Light to Medium Bodied, Mildly Sweet, Watery Overall, an underwelming oktoberfest that just didnt have enough flavor...not to mention that it is mid January and you still have an oktoberfest on tap says a lot too.

A: Red/Golden Straw Hue, Passes Some Light, Great White Head, Great Lacing S: Malts, Bready, Floral T: Malty, Resin, Mild Bread, Mild Floral M: Great Carbonation, Light to Medium Bodied, Bitter, Mildly Dry Overall, the beer looks impressive throughout but that is its best quality. The beer did not balance well as you are oveerwelmed by the hoppy bitterness and left with it.

Had this while in lower NY or was it near UConn? In any event this was malt dominated and dare I say refreshing?

3.4
Hyde Park Barrel 9 Octoberfest
Draft after the disaster of the Schwartz. A lovely clear golden. Crisp and clean to start with caramel and buttered malt tone to build and ultimately finish. While not a spectacular example of Oktoberfest, a quaffable, decent pint.

Hyde Park Von Schtupps Dark Lager
Draft at the brewpub yesterday with lunch. Nose of light cocoa. Slick and shimmering black in the glass. I sent it back due to the overwhelming decay and funky rotten vegetable taste that overtook the second half of the mouthfeel. I nearly spit it out. I asked the waiter if they had cleaned their lines lately. He looked at me strangely. I stated that I thought that it was off a bit. He stated that it wasn’t. My first thought was then..."so you regularly serve sub par beer" I asked for the Oktoberfest.....While they didn’t blink when I asked to exchange the beer. They did come back and ask if I liked the Oktoberfest. I stated that it was "OK", and the waiter replied "yes it is truly excellent isn’t it?" I nearly threw a fork at his face.

Hyde Park Hefeweizen
On draught at the brewpub. Arrived a the table a cloudy yellow straw with a ring for a head. Pleasant aroma of banana with notes of fresh lemon. The flavor is more lemon than banana with some malt as well. Very smooth on the palate and refreshing. Nice summer ale!

Hyde Park Chaos Dry Stout
On draught at the brewpub. Arrived at the table black with a ring for a head. Very pleasant aroma of coffee and chocolate. The flavor is malt, lightly roasted with a bit of chocolate that is washed by some mild sourness. I’m not sure if its supposed to be there or not, but there is definitely a light sour twang. Mild bitterness at the finish. Medium bodied.

Hyde Park I.R.A. (India Red Ale)
An amber ale with a thin off white head. In aroma, a light grassy hops and caramel malt. In mouth, a biscuit malt with light British hops, a bit astringent. On tap at TAP NY, April 28, 2012.

2.2
Hyde Park Barrel 9 Irish Brown Ale
On tap at the brewery. Pours a clear ruby to crimson brown with a medium large beige to tan head. Nutty roast bitterness, funky dirt, infections. Stinky, eggy, and sulfurous. Medium bodied, sweet and smoky, nutty. Very disconnected. What is this? Very strange. Dark oxidized sweetness. Thin and sweet. Lingering smoke on the finish. Quite a wreck.

2.3
Hyde Park I.R.A. (India Red Ale)
On tap at the brewery. Pours a clear red amber with a medium sized white to beige head. Toast and malt, soft hops, sweet malt and oxidization. Probably not good when your hoppy beer smells of oxidization while still on tap. Medium bodied, tastes of salty sweet tarts with a dirty bitterness. Really weird. Why is it salty? Rather empty. Long bitterness that tastes like sticks. Sadly, this was the better of the two beers I had there tonight.

2.8
Hyde Park Light Rye
On tap at the brewpub. Pours a clear gold with a thin white head. Crisp grain and lemon, sweet candy. Sweet, malt and grain. Sweet and somewhat empty. Not bad per se, but there’s little to no rye to be found here, so I guess “Light Rye” didn’t just mean a light beer, but also that it’s actually a bit light on the rye as well. Lightly sweet and grainy finish.

3.5
Hyde Park Barrel 9 Scotch Ale
Draught @ Brewpub. This one poured a ruby tinged amber color. It was fairly clear. There was a very small off-white head on it that left no lacing. Nice aroma. Mainly a smokey, malty nose. The taste was also good. It was slightly sweet, smokey and very malty. A bit of hops in there for a nice balance. A rotating offering, hopefully I will be back in the area when it comes up again!

2.5
Hyde Park Mary Ps Porter
Not a lot of aroma. Was not as dark a color as I was expecting. Instead of something approaching a jet black it was more of a really dark brown. Not a lot going on on the palate but has some maltiness on the finish. Pretty boring for a porter.

DiarmaidBHK
1.9
Hyde Park Special Old Bitter
Pours a fairly faint yellow with a thin head and leaves some lacing. Not a lot going on in terms of taste. I was expecting some sort of hop expression but all i got was this astringent thing. Very disapointing!

3.4
Hyde Park Rough Rider Red Lager
Not a ton of aroma. Pours ruby red with a thin head. Very pleasant malt taste which seems to suggest licorice without being cloying. Finishes clean. This would make a nice session beer.

Hyde Park Winkle Lager
a bit better than the big easy blonde. Not much aroma here. Taste is a bit cleaner but not terribly hoppy which is too bad. Finishes fairly clean. Could make a decent lawnmower beer. Of course I don’t own a lawnmower.

2.1
Hyde Park Big Easy Blonde
Pours light yellow with very little aroma. Leaves no lacing. Taste is bitter but not in a good way. Not much hop or malt action here. This stuff is drying out my mouth.

3.3
Hyde Park Von Schtupps Dark Lager
Location: Draft at the Brewpub, 10/2/10

Aroma: The nose is fairly sweet, toffee, roasted malts, and a touch of fruit
Appearance: It pours a fairly dark brown-black color with a bit of tan head
Flavor: The taste is fairly sweet up-front flowing into a roasted malt finish
Palate: It has a fairly light body, but isn’t watery at all, it has a smooth feel, and low carbonation
Overall Impression: This was probably my favorite thing that I tried here, a fairly enjoyable and well-made brew. I thought it was a solid Schwarz, and I enjoyed drinking it.

3.1
Hyde Park Rough Rider Red Lager
Location: Draft at the Brewpub, 10/2/10

Aroma: The nose had a good amount of spice, a bunch of caramel malts, and a bit of hops
Appearance: This beer pours a clear caramel orange color with a small beige head
Flavor: The taste is also spicy and caramel malts mostly with a bit of bitterness
Palate: It has a somewhat spicy mouthfeel with a lasting tingle on the tongue
Overall Impression: I found this beer to be a decent enough overall. It wasn’t great, but it was good. Something I’d drink again at this place based on what is available here, but not something I’d go out of my way for.

3
Hyde Park Special Old Bitter
Location: Draft at the Brewpub, 10/2/10

Aroma: The nose has caramel/toffee malts along with a bit of hops, a fairly light nose
Appearance: This one is a clear orange color-red beer with a head that leaves light lace on the glass
Flavor: The taste is fairly balanced, subtle, with a light malty sweetness and some hops as well
Palate: The body is light to medium, it has an alright mouthfeel, but it thins out a bit as it goes
Overall Impression: Overall this reminded me of a something between a simple, standard ESB and a low hop English style IPA. I didn’t love it, but I found it to be sessionable enough to enjoy with my meal.

3.2
Hyde Park Barrel 9 Dunkleweizen
Location: Draft at the Brewpub as Chocolate Wheat, but it appears to be the same beer based on j12601’s review, 10/2/10

Aroma: It has a malty nose, some roast, some chocolate, and just a drop of wheat
Appearance: It pours into the glass a clear brown-orange color
Flavor: The flavor is rather malty, it’s interesting, and it’s similar to the nose
Palate: This one has a light-medium body, it is drinkable, and it has a decent feel
Overall Impression: This one is more malty then wheaty. It almost feels more like a Belgian Dubbel then a German Dunkleweizen to me, as I didn’t get a ton of wheat in this one. Anyway, this one was interesting for sure. While it wasn’t a great beer, it has some interesting characteristics, and it was a good effort.

2.4
Hyde Park Winkle Lager
Location: Draft at the Brewpub, 10/2/10

Aroma: A light and dull aroma of grains and corn, fairly typical of a boring pale lager
Appearance: The pour of this one is clear, golden in color, and with no head
Flavor: It has a malty sweetness up-front with a finish of hoppy bitterness and something quite off
Palate: It is fairly light of body, and feel that lasts on the tongue just doesn’t quite work for me
Overall Impression: This one is not exciting at all, probably my least favorite thing that I tried at the Brewpub. It is rather dull and typical of the mediocre examples of the style, and it has a rather odd aftertaste. This just really isn’t very good.

2.7
Hyde Park Big Easy Blonde
Location: Draft at the Brewpub, 10/2/10

Aroma: It has a yeasty nose with some light citrus
Appearance: Pours a clear gold color with almost no head
Flavor: Lightly flavored with some citrus and yeast, balanced but dull
Palate: It has a light body, is somewhat crisp, with average carbonation
Overall Impression: Overall this wasn’t a terrible beer, it just isn’t particularly exciting either. Not something I would order again, but if you like unassuming beers, this one might be up your alley.

Hyde Park Barrel 9 Dunkleweizen
On tap at the brewpub, and being called "Chocolate Wheat" now. Pours a Clear brown with copper and orange highlights under a large beige head, which falls off fast. Aromas of faint cocoa, sweet tart wheat, metal, and roast. Flavors of soured cocoa, metal, wheat, a tart sweetness. Weird. Finishes with some roast, cocoa, chocolate, and tart wheat. Better than expected.

2.5
Hyde Park Krystal Weizen
On tap at the brewpub. Pours a mostly clear orange brown with a thin white head. Burnt sugar, banana, smelling a lot like some sweet extract homebrews. Thin to medium bodied. Vegetal flavors and old bananas. Sweet with a metallic tang, old cardboard and caramel flavors. Slow old malt on the finish, more caramel vegetal flavors with some lingering banana. The vegetal flavors and aromas increase as it warms, so as tough as it was to put down cold, it became nigh undrinkable the longer I delayed.

3.1
Hyde Park Von Schtupps Dark Lager
On tap at the Hyde Park Brewery. Pours a deep black with a medium sized beige head. Metal and chocolate on the nose. Toast and light grain. Toast and coffee in the body, thin and watery. Grainy and a bit of chocolate and some light cereal flavors. Sightly off plastic and vegetal flavors that are standard for HP’s beers. Not as bad as the rest of them though, it seems the darker malts often cover up some of the more glaring flaws in many of their lighter offerings. Soft sweet finish. Drinkable at least.
