Blackwell Apollo II Saison
Tap at Erzbierschof Zurich. Pours cloudy amber, pale orange. Aroma is mostly saison yeast, but quite fruity. Orange. Body is medium with a soft carbonation. Almost no bitterness, little sweetness, quite dry. Short palate. Easy to drink, yet not super exciting.

Blackwell Mercury Saison
Tap at Erzbierschof Zurich. Pours almost clear amberish yellow. Aroma is very citric, artificial, like sour candy. Body is super late, watery, with ripe banana and yeast flavours. Tastes like a Hefeweizen gone wrong. Palate turns bitter. Weird.

Tap. Hazy golden color with white head. Aroma is Brausetablette-yeast-funk, wheat, some spicy rye. Taste is bananas, wheat, watery, with some spicy yeasts. Oily mouthfeel, but also watery. The aroma is interesting, the taste is too German-Weizen (but more watery) for me.

Blackwell Retro Weisse
enjoyed on brewery premise during a tasting: this is an excellent expansion of the Berliner Weisse style into the fruity region with a nicely executed no-boil creation. Nose is lacto-sour mixed with fruit salad, very sharp taste is instantly mellowed by pepper, pappaya, orange, citrus melange finished of by a perfect non-weisse mixture of lemon, salt, coriander and ample tropical fruit. This is definitely a beer I could be entertained by more than once especially given its very low abv.

Blackwell Apollo Saison
enjoyed on brewery premise during a tasting: cloudy white nice appearance, nose is fairly pig stable but no medicinal funk, mouthfeel is full and satisfying. Finishes dry with hints of brett lingering for a while and not a lot of hops competing with it. Some corn and leather aromas make it a very nice drinking beer.

Blackwell Die 4 ??? Wild Ale
enjoyed on brewery premise during a tasting: this one just absolutely went against my palate in a strange way. Nose is overwhelmingly glutamate with some vegetal and grass notes, taste of more glutamate like reduced mushrooms in a salt brine.

Blackwell / T-H-C Millie’s Amber Ale
enjoyed on brewery premise during a tasting: transparent brown ale, nose is oddly faulty, a little green, some hints of caramel, extremely timid and non-offensive. some amber malts come through with very low carbonation, palate is lacking texture and finish is a little watery. This one will need some more time to bottle condition until its faults are fixed.

Blackwell Brewer’s Reserve Ice Hoppy Pacamara
enjoyed on brewery premise during a tasting: very confusing nose of coffee, licorice, anis maybe some hop fruit like apricot? palate is entertaining interplay of licorice sweets and coffee-fruit. no noticeable toast or burnt aromas but finish is very hop-pronounced. Excellently balanced at a very high abv with a lot of different tastes going on at the same time in a chaotic manner.

Blackwell Brewer’s Reserve Arctic Tannenbaum
enjoyed on brewery premise during a tasting: This is a bender of tastebuds, dark with no head, not much carbonation and a nose of cough syrup, tree sap and vegetation. Aroma of tannins more tree sap and oddly medicinal remedy. Fairly vegetal palate but excellent vermouth and wormwood finish. Alcohol is surpressed but warms for a long time. The description might not give it away but this eccentric combination of flavors just somehow works.

Blackwell Brewer’s Reserve Dark Arts
enjoyed on brewery premise during a tasting: dark without any head, citrus nose with some solvent and a hint of roast, quite a lot of wood but no perceptible vanilla, mouth is fairly neutral with the right amount of sour to work out with the wood. finish is not sharp but rather mellow sweetness combined with the perfect amount of acid. A fine example of a sour stout but a little too simple for my taste.

Blackwell Brewer’s Reserve Demotape -1-
enjoyed on brewery premise during a tasting: smells a little like a camp fire but the day after, roasted young branches used to poke a fire. some caramel and surprisingly, none of that ashy aroma a lot of smoked porters or stouts seem to carry. bready toast aroma, finishes dry and chalky but with the chalk mingling in the general porter aroma quite well. aftertaste is long almost like an imperial stout or imperial porter but at a surprising 4.6%. This is a unique beer which certainly pushed my boundaries of smoked dark beers.

Blackwell Zeitreise Münster-Länder
enjoyed on brewery premise during a tasting: copper amber color, no head whatsoever, nose is an amazing mix of malt and prune and apricots, maybe a little caramel? aroma is acidity in perfect harmony with caramel and fruit. However, finish is slightly boring with nice lingering acidity but not certainly not overwhelming. excellent and unique to have such harmony of clean malt and acidity.

Blackwell Wild Raspberry 16
enjoyed on brewery premise during a tasting, less than ideal sample because of a bottling issue: seems very complicated on the nose especially given the low abv of the beer. Mix of balsamico, raspberry, cranberry, strawberry and general melange of berries. very nice and full carbonation provides excellent mouthfeel with perlage, finish is fairly sweet with lots of red berry, nose gravitates more towards pig funk with temperature rise.

Blackwell Sommernacht
enjoyed on brewery premise during a tasting: super nice transparent ruby color, very lively carbonation, all the way raspberry but never overpowering, no leftover sweetness, some farm barnyard nose. Overly entertaining, very nice session beer. The raspberry is focused on being sessionable and dry, never sweet or extract-like.

Blackwell Kaffee-Pausen-Clown
enjoyed on brewery premise during a tasting: this is one of those beers that puts a corner stone in a beer-tasting journey. bright citrus, some pig stable funk and some very bright light-roast coffee and spice all before even taking the first sip. super light and absolutely enjoyable mouthfeel with fizzy carbonation propelling yellow fruit aromas. None of the burnt stout or roast notes which are typically found in coffee beer yet the finish features extensive coffee-fruit notes of stone fruit, yellow berries.

Blackwell Mercury Saison
enjoyed on brewery premise during a tasting: light color, transparent look, nose of typical German wheat beer, lots of isoamylacetate, very watery on palate but long lasting finish of hops and belgian funk. definitely not my favorite because of the dissonance of an inviting nose, a bitter finish but a very water taste.

Lemon tart, acidic lime juice. Hazy, pale gold, massive, frothy, white head. Medium to heavy sour. More sour lemon juice, tart, lively carbonation, light bodied, very sour finish, almost get some wood flavours. OK Berliner Weisse, too sour, too one-dimensional. Bottle from Muehlestuebli, Steffisburg.

Tap at CBFZ 2016. The sourness and the stout are noticeable in the aroma already: Burnt, some chocolate, little coffee, and those Bretts. Mouth is basically sour only, with some salt, and an acidic palate. Works, but it is unusual.

Bottle: Served in a Chouffe glass: Brown to black beer with a brown head that disappears within seconds. Nose of funk, tart fruit, cheese, roast, some red fruit, slight hint of brown sugars, wood, apples, manure... Flavour is quite tart, light tart fruity, tart yeasty and a little dryness. Funky and herbal. Some lacto tones, specially in the beginning. Little vinous notes. Tart fruity funky aftertaste. Low carbo, watery tart mouthfeel, more than medium bodied. Good stuff!

Dry saison yeast, wood, sour grapes, white wine barrel. Hazy, pale gold, medium, creamy, white head. Light sweet initially but turning dry sour very quickly. Dry sours intensify, wood, oak aged white wine, saison yeast, dry, sour and bitter finish. Great classical Saison, very true to the style, well-balanced. Bottle from Beers’n’More, Zurich.
