Boliarka Svetlo
500ml can from the shop, drunk at home. Pours clear with a fast-settling frothy head, some lacing and a brief bead. Faint aromas of corn syrup, hay and bread. Relatively flat in the mouth with lower than average carbonation; some bread and biscuit flavours are released. Mild bitterness with minimal hop presence, a touch of sweetness. Overall, just another sub-par Eastern European macro lager.

Balkansko Svetlo
500ml can from the shop, drunk at home. Pours clear with a frothy white head that endured for a minute or two, lacing while the head lasted, no bead. Aroma of corn, wet cereal and with slightly floral and biscuit notes. Medium carbonation releasing malt and corn syrup flavours in the mouth with hints of toasted bread. Light bodied but not watery. Little sugar and a medium bitter finish. Overall, slightly better than average for a Bulgarian lager.

500ml can from the shop, drunk at home. Pours clear, but almost opaque with a thin frothy pale brown head, plenty of lacing, no bead. Dark brown in colour. Light aroma of toast, caramel and corn. Creamy mouth feel with mid to high carbonation and flavours of toast, cereal and bread. Crisp finish with well-balanced bitterness. Overall, a fairly ordinary dunkel, but nevertheless, a welcome change from the raft of supermarket lagers and pilseners, and refreshing enough to be drunk all year round. Sadly, it remains one of Bulgaria's seasonal dark beers.

500ml can from CBA, drunk at home. This Boliarka product is clearly a different brew from the 3.5% beer of the same name brewed by Lomsko Pivo. Pours clear with a thin short-lived frothy head, minimal lacing, some bead. Mid straw in colour. Some hay and bread on the nose, with corn and wet cardboard. Lively in the mouth at first, but soon giving way to aggressive hoppy bitterness and little real flavour. Overall, not a terrible 3% lager, but a 3% lager is rarely a good thing at the best of times.

Boliarka Unpasteurised
500ml bottle from the shop, drunk at home. Pours clear with a long-lasting frothy head. Amber in colour, no bead, considerable lacing. Aroma of nuts, smoke and some corn, hay and slight fruit. Creamy in the mouth with straightforward bitterness from the start, but soon receding, and then a little thin. Overall, an acceptable alternative to the usual raft of instantly forgettable Bulgarian lagers.

Can from the local shop, drunk at home. Mid amber, slightly frothy head that settled quickly but clung to the glass. Complex subtle hops predominates from the first sip, some hay, and bread, slightly spicy. Better than average for a Bulgarian lager.

Bottle at Nora’s in Sofia. Picked up at Billa. Pours clear yellow with a frothy, pure white head. Simple pale, grainy malts in the one, with some vague lemony accents. Lightly sweet, with more simple, dry pale grains, hay, biscuits, faint grass. Light bodied with average carbonation. Somewhat dry in the finish, with further crispy grains, straw, biscuits. Quite a basic pale lager, but it drinks pretty good.

Can sourced from, and drank in, Dryanovo. Pours crystal clear yellow-gold with a mellow, goamy white head. Very light crispy cereal aroma, with just inklings of hay. Light sweet flavour with pleasant bready notes, more cereal, hay. Light bodied with average carbonation. Somewhat bland on the finish, but still pretty clean, with subtle biscuity jotes, light bitter straw, hints of grass and cereal. Pretty drinkable, though very simple lager.

Can poured at Tom’s during tick hour. Golden pour with a patchy fizz head. Straw heavy aroma. Dry straw flavor to pair. Expected taste results from a international pale lager, but a little on the weird side for me on this one.

500ml green and white can, as Diana Lager, bought in Thessaloniki, Greece and brought home. Poured into a glass tankard. ABV 3% Clear golden yellow body, small froathy head with very low retention, no lacing on the glass. Aroma of malts, cereals, very faint. Sweet and very malty taste, blant. Thin watery body, low carbonation. Totally boring.

500ml can as Diana Premium Lager, bought in Thessaloniki, Greece and brought home, poured into a glass tankard. ABV 4.1% Deep golden yellow colour on the body with one finger of white head on top, froathy, diminishing quickly, leaving just traces of lacing around the glass. Aroma has malts, fresh grass, some refreshing lemon notes. Taste of malts, cardboard, hay, quite sweet but with a good enough bitterness on the aftertaste. Thin body with okay carbonation. Overall okay, I expected worse.

Canned 500ml. -Dark brown/almost black coloured, big and long-lasting beige head, caramel and cheap honey in the nose. Sweet caramel, light roasted malt and light coffee with notes of corn and alcohol in the finish. A way too sweet and quite strong alcohol notes for 5%ABV.

Can at home in Gabrovo, Bulgaria - picked up at the offie across the street. Pours perfectly clear yellow-gold, lightly effervescent with a soft, white froth head. The nose is all pale cereal grains with slight accents of white paper and lemon rind. Light sweet flavor with mild bitter hay, grain husk and citrus peel, plus more basic pale, grainy malt sugars. Light bodied with fine, massaging carbonation. Crisp finish, slightly bland, with more somewhat papery pale cereal, mellow dry white bread and hay. A fair session pale lager.

Poured from the 600mL glass bottle. The beer is a typical bright, pale gold color. Some light grainy malt up front. There is a good amount of bitterness here considering the style and the brand. Finishes with a kind of off taste and grass. Mouthfeel is average. Nothing noteworthy. Definitely not something I would seek out by any means, but you could do a lot worse I guess.
