Myths and Legends Lion’s Pride Special: Oak Chips & Grand marnier
Draft at M&L. This is their Lion’s Pride 80/~ Ale with additional oak chips & Grand Marnier liqueur added. It has a ruddy brown color in my 8 oz. glass, with a tight English ale-style head. A strong, pleasant smell that mostly suggests brandy. It’s more like a Grand Marnier with soda than a Scottish Ale, no smokiness or peat. I do kind of like it after all. The oak chips combined with the hops give it a slightly offside bitterness. Reminds me of the Innis & Gunn naked beer, but the mouthfeel is "thicker" for this one.

Bottle. Vanilla with roasty malt. Light oak with some whisky. Flavors are subitle but well balanced. Vanilla comes off as a bit artificial. As I understand it this was a homebrew contracted to a Urban Legend by a local beer group. By that standard it’s pretty decent. The ba vanilla stout game is tough to compete in. I’ve had worse from legit breweries.

Taste: Big roasted coffee, toffee, dark malts, chocolate, nutty, semi sweet, sticky, creamy but not heavy finish. Same with the rich nose. Black, opaque, tan foamy head with broken ring of lace. Medium body than full. Smooth and easy to sip.

Dark brown appearance, with a hints of orange and red when flashlight tested. Smaller, but stable tan head. Nice lace. Mild roasted malt and citrus scents. Hints of chocolate and herbs. This is one of those black IPAs that the scents do much for me. I know it’s not bad, but just my thing. Light citric sweetness in the front. Fairly acidic, I’m thinking from both the hops and perhaps some black malt. Fairly spritzy feel. Some coffee and dark chocolate in the finish. Linger is a bit bitter and acidic.

On tap at Lunar Brewing Co., and snifter served showing a coppery amber color, with a frothy layer of off white foam, and sheet-like spray as lacing, The nose was slightly dank, fruitiness of citrus & pit fruit, and some malty sweetness. The taste was similar, medium bodied, with okay carbonation, a pronounced & lingering bitterness that was rind-like & earthy, kind of hidden alcohol, and slight tanginess to the finish. Not spectacular, but a decent enough DIPA.

22 ox. bomber (batch #238) pours an opaque dark brown/black with medium mocha head and rings of lacing. Aroma is dominated by coffee and other roasted malts with a touch of vanilla. Taste is sweet, with plenty of sugar and cream to temper the coffee bitterness. Body is medium to full with slight but adequate carbonation and a creamy mouthfeel. Alcohol is well hidden, with a touch of coffee bitterness, not booze in the aftertaste. The brewery calls this an Imperial Stout, but I would have guessed sweet stout or imperial porter. I was expecting a dark, complex headbanger, but ended up enjoying a simple big dark coffee beer, which I’ll gladly try again

On tap at Lunar Brewing Co., and snifter served showing a rosy, copper color, with a finger’s width of white head froth, and web-like cling to the lacing. The nose was slightly dank, with esters as light cherry & berry preserves, and not so much of the touted citrus. Medium bodied, with good carbonation, the taste was similar, adding some earthy bitterness, and light, Barleywine-like booziness. Not perceived as altogether fresh from start to finish, but a respectable DIPA, nonetheless.

Bottle I had pre-purchased before it was made. Don’t know if I’d do that again but interesting way to fund a beer project. A lot of haters surrounding these beers and how the whole project went down but its here might as well try it. Poured into snifter flat black with min tan head. Aroma strong fresh barrel nutty booze. Light carb med bod. Taste light bitter pretty sweet smooth choc malt intense barrel char that hangs. Not a lot of hazelnuts in this. Overall a good brew that you should try and judge for yourself...

Dark, nearly black pour with generous head that slowly dissipates. It’s nearly unscented. Decent carbonation level. As far as taste, this brew really didn’t have any outstanding qualities. It’s a fair porter, just not one I would visit often.

Urban Legend Barrel Aged Cold War
Blue wax bomber from the 4/15/16 release. 175/200. Black pour, slight beige head, aroma is well whiskey and roast. First sip and my though was ’tastes like they used sh*tty Koval barrels. That was before reading the label which confirmed that. Not sure why breweries continue to use those small super young barrels. The resulting beer always has a cheap, harsh overly boozy whiskey flavor with plenty of acetone. Underneath that the was some nice roasty and dark fruit but the barrel treatment killed it. Mouthfeel was decent, creamy and silky but that’s about as far as I can go to compliment it. I don’t know how a brewery can taste this and put it in a bottle and justify $25. The entire batch should have been dumped. They’ve either never tried a good ba stout or think they are fooling people that haven’t. Buy some better barrels and try again.

On tap at Lunar Brewing Co., and snifter served displaying a black/brown hue with a finger’s width of tan head foam that didn’t last too long, leaving some spots & ribbons of light lacing on the glass. The nose was roasted, mocha notes, with some caramel sweetness and vanilla. Medium to full bodied, with moderate carbonation, the taste continued the aroma notes, added some dark fruit, hefty alcohol presence, and included a roasted & earthy bitterness that combined with a finishing tartness. Pretty tasty, but a pricey pour.

12 oz glass at U. L., $7. Strong smell is intoxicating, yet smooth, perhaps some oatmeal in the grist. Black Ale still offers a bit of brown highlights, and a thin tan head. Taste combines the best of a coffee liquer and a fine motor oil. That’s a coffee roast, of course, with notes of vanilla and just a little stout sourness. A bit of astringent malt aftertaste can be a bit of a detraction. Overall, though, a fine impy stout experience that suits sitting at the end of the Taproom bar as well as it does shopping at home during a cold, snowy evening.

On tap at Lunar Brewing Co. and snifter served, displaying a fairly clear, ambered gold color, with a finger’s width of soft white head foam, and doily-like cling to the lacing. The aroma was slightly dank at first, then malty sweet, almost candy-like, dried/pit fruit, with some citrusy notes. The taste showed booze and some Barleywine nature up front, then citrus, and maybe a little resin, less sweetness than the nose, and an earthy, rind-like bitterness that also projected some citrusy astringency, and lingered in tandem with the alcohol warmth. Medium+ bodied, and somewhat dry finishing, with maybe a bit of amped malt impression, but fairly good "IPA balance".

Poured from the bomber, brown with red hue, white collar, smells like hops and booze. I have to say I’m a big fan of strong red ale and Sanford and son so these two things being brought together is very exiting to me, very reminiscent of champagne and ripple being mixed to make cham-pipple!? Or Aunt Ester’s face and cookie dough being brought together to make gorilla cookies. I miss Redd Foxx, he was my hero growing up. Make a beer to salute George Jefferson and I’ll buy that too!
