Granite City 43 Bells Dunkelweizen
5%ABV. Dunkelweizen. Tapped out dark brown. 28°SRM. Nose has light yeasty, spicy aroma, more like hints at it rather than actually showing through. You get feeling that the brewer was either going for safe and commercially approachable or paying undue attention to the bottom line when figuring out the grain bill. Upon revisiting the nose, there is caramel banana and hint of bubblegum. Mouthfeel is watery and beery. Palate had some fruity sour, some ume, wheat flour flavor.

5.2%ABV. Altbier. Tapped out clear dark crimson-brown. Mouthfeel is beery and light. Palate is light sour, hint fruity, carbonated and wheat toast. Hint of nutty flavor. Hops are noble. Finish is light and beery.

Granite City Batch 1,000
7.2%ABV. Double IPA. Tapped out deep cloudy amber. 16°SRM. Nose is light and beery. Not much in the way to hop aroma. No bright floral or citrus aromas, mainly sweet wood like cherry. Mouthfeel is relatively light and almost beery with only light soap. Palate is graham cracker, light honey, hint of maple sugar. Hops are woody, pine sap, light resin. Finish is medium with a resinous linger that comes back again. Overall for me not very satisfying. Not quite 2 dimensional but suggests it with sweet and bitter.

On tap at gc eagan, pours a clear pale golden with a large white head. Sweet malt aroma, light honey and bread, mild grassy hops. Upfront bitter grassy hops with some yeast, finishing with a bland semi sweet malt that fades to the end. Ok, not an amazing pils but drinkable enough.

Granite City 43 Bells Dunkelweizen
4/01/2017 (draft at Granite City in Maumee, Ohio): I don’t love Grantie City beer, but I don’t dislike it either; it’s all just mostly okay and mainstreem. I was happy to see something new being offered on my last visit, so that’s what I went with. The Grantie City 43 Bells Dunkelweizen has a turbid dark gray color and that appearance is a clue to the flavor... It’s a lot like they took their regular hefewiezen and added charcoal. It’s wheaty with notes of banana, clove, and bubblegum, but then there is a dry, ashy maltiness and the darker color. Overall, it’s a decent beer.

Granite City Serrano Pepper Bock
4/01/2017 (draft at Granite City in Maumee, Ohio): The underlying Granite City Bennie Bock is a pretty solid beer. It’s malty and clean, not overly sweet or string, but easy to drink with enough nuttiness to keep it interesting. So what happens when they add Serrano chili peppers? It is still very much the same, but with a really nice chili pepper heat. It starts out as not much at all with the first sip, but builds and builds with each sip. It is very good, but was getting pretty hot after only getting through a 4 fl oz sample. I really like it and they did a good job with this beer, but I’m not sure that I’d really want to drink an entire mug of this one!

Blind tasted with 5 other pale lagers. Beers were: 1. Dog Tag Legacy Lager, 2. Amber Harde, 3. Granite City The Northern, 4. Rammer Jammer Beer, 5. Amber Johannes, 6. Ale Asylum 12 oz. Curl. All raters rated them 61 345 TIED 2.

355ml bottle, brewed at minhas. Clear pale gold pour. Aroma is spicy and buttery. Flavor is sweet and papery, bit of plastic, not great.

Post tasting thoughts:
I know granite city is a poorer brewpub chain so going to minhas for a contract was a bad decision.

A dull and lifeless bock...perhaps because the flavor was lost when they poured it in that frozen glass. Why? The best thing Granite City serves, but that isn’t saying much.

Granite City Seven Pipe Oak-Aged Scottish Ale
On tap at Creve Coeur. It poured a cloudy copper color with an off-white head. The aroma was of malts, toffee, vanilla and nuts. The taste was similar to the aroma with more malts, toffee, vanilla, some bourbon, and nuts. It was medium bodied with light carbonation. The finish was dry and had a little bourbon in the aftertaste. Decent.

3.4
Granite City Zug Zwang Vanilla Porter
Downtown Indianapolis location. Pours a clear light brown body with a small wispy brown head. The nose is fairly heavy sweetness with a decent vanilla note, a little chocolate and coffee. The flavor is on the sweeter side, enhanced by the vanilla, with a light chocolate malt middle. Finishes a bit watery and weak, but this is by far the best beer on offer this visit.

2.7
Granite City Batch 1,000
Pours a hazy copper body with a one finger foamy beige head. The nose is citrusy hops, with some caramel and toasted malt. Flavor wise, the hop level doesn’t reach DIPA levels in the slightest. This is all about the caramel malt sweetness, which doesn’t really work for me. Medium bodied with a light touch of alcohol, soft fizzy carbonation and a lingering toasted malt finish. Pretty bad try at a DIPA.

2.6
Granite City Prairie Vixen
Pours a clear light gold body with a small fizzy white head. The nose is lightly estery with a touch of banana and clove, a little lacking in yeastiness for a hefe. The flavor is similar, a little thin, with just a hint of banana. Little to no yeastiness at all. Light bodied with a thin body and fizzy carbonation. Not a great hefe at all, should just call this an American wheat.

Granite City Zug Zwang Vanilla Porter
Pours a jet black with a thin head. Aroma is chocolate and roast malts with some vanilla and earthy notes. Flavor is chocolate, roast, and a touch of vanilla. The vanilla is subtle enough to add some character without overpowering. Still, it has a bit of a cola taste. Body is light. This isn’t bad.
