Cask at the Three Judges, Glasgow late October 2017. An excellent pint. Good head and what you can see through is clear 😊 Wonderful aroma of, surprise, plums but a sharp clean taste. How a porter should be imo.

B&T Golden Fox
Cask handpull at The Pembury Tavern Hackney as Banks & Taylor Golden Fox, 4.1%. Very happy looking cartoon fox on the yellow pump clip. Golden yellow, pretty clear, still with a bubbly off white head. Aroma is rounded bready malts, light straw and pale wood. Body is smooth with soft carbonation. Taste is straw, little lemongrass, light astringency, some woody spice in the finish. Not bad, decent drinkability. A middling golden bitter. (5-4-5-4-13=3.1)

Near-opaque brown beer with a thin head. The (light) smell and taste are both malty chocolate with a dash of caramel. A bit lightweight and watery but decent all the same.

B&T Born Free
Handpull cask at the Elm Tree, Cambridge. Clear gold, with the tiniest spots of white head and a bit of lacing. Flowery hop scent with touches of honey and blood orange. Bittersweet taste with some citrus juice. Fairly uniform until the finish when it turns slightly more bitter. A touch of soap in the aftertaste but this seems to disappear the more I drink. A pretty good golden beer from a brewery I haven’t had in a while.

Cask conditioned at The White Horse, Banbury, Oxon. Black with cream head. Good grief this was sweet, plummy certainly, over-ripe Victoria plums, floral, perfumed. I wasn’t over keen on this.

Cask. Pours golden pale straw. White top and lasting lacing. Aroma cheesy yeast. But it is the taste that most disappoints. Medium sour. Medium bitter with some saltiness. Body light to medium. Texture sticky. Carbonation soft. Finish soft and long due to oil on the palate. A beer that fails and refuses to leave.

Cask. Judging by reviews from those whose judgment I respect, this is a beer that divides opinion. Aroma has some quality mandarin and orange peel is actually there. Appearance is orange copper body and white lace top mostly lasting. Taste is full bodied with bread malts balancing the fruit and a bitter finish. I think both Beowulf and Grendel would approve.

B&T Shefford Plum Mild
Cask. Aroma modestly fruity but hardly plum plump. Pours very dark with creamy white top. Taste is more licorice malts than plum so plum porter fans back away. But one should acknowledge that its body, look and flavours are achieved in the low abv mild range. That takes skill.

Cask (Elm Tree, Cambridge)
Salty preserved spiced plums aroma, sweetish, and definitely has the plum fruitiness. Totally liquoricey taste, harsh and slaty and chemical. Anna gets some elastoplast in the finish, and too much liquorice. Finish is definitely smoky and phenolic. A bit rough. Way too liquoricey, I’m sure they just threw in spiced dried plums into the brew.

Cask handpump at The White Horse, Banbury, Oxon, Sunday 5th March 2017 Pours very dark brown with nice cream textured and coloured head. Soft, easy drinking mild, not necessarily picking up plums but I guess that is the fruitiness I’m getting, a little thin (watery) smooth, ok. A6 A4 T6 P3 Ov13 3.2

Spring Spoonsfest 2016. End of barrel but I’ll take it. Wispy diaphanous blonde that could pass for a wheat it’s that murky. TCP yeast and conifer with a corn-like biscuit finish. Lactic and nutty peanut hints. Shrub, grass and monkey nut nose. Hint of pith. Probably decent fresh. Some German lager herb and sesame.
