3+ years aged. Heavy deep dark brown hue with a thin light tan cap. Big rich roasty black malt nose with dark cocoa and a gentle licorice/molasses note, a kiss of coffee and burnt brown sugar. Smooth sweet flavor with some black malt roastiness and a smooth velvety licorice coffee undertone. A tad earthy sweet and velvety licorice-ish and cocoa-y.

Left Coast Hop Juice

Pizza Port / Artifex / Left Coast South County IPA
650ml bottle from the Malt Shoppe in Tosa. No bottle date, but have never seen before. Copper orange pour with an off-white head leaving nice streaky lacing. Aroma has pine and citrus and caramel, leaning to the orange juice side. Taste is of sweet caramel, tangy orange juice, and some chewy resin. Plenty of berry showing up, down through the glass. There is something a little off in the flavor, which may be the combination of the berry with the rest. Medium bodied with little alcohol presence. The blend is decent but not really better than that, and the carbonation is constant. Finishes to the sweet side of bittersweet. This seems to have good parts, but does not come together in the way that it could, and thus is just ok-to-solid. 13.5

Left Coast Voo Doo American Stout

Pours brown, bit hazy. Roast coffee, vinous, viscosity is high, beer sticks to the glass. Nice chocolaty stout, roast and chocolate are blending great, a bit of fresh coffee - apparently coming from malts. Good roast lingering for quite long. Liking it.

Left Coast Asylum Belgian-Style Tripel Ale
A great tripel is like a flavor/texture starburst; this one is like a stomp through a swamp. First of all, it looks scary: it’s murky, brown, sewage-like, without enough carbonation to at least lend it a transcendent bit of zest. On the palate an initial inviting citrusy element quickly succumbs to outright bitterness. An earthy, vegetal bitterness that overwhelms. I’ve had quite a few bland/dull tripels - - it’s a tough style to excel in. This one is not bland/dull - - it’s an unbalanced murky mess. Maybe it was on the shelf at the Total Wine in Vegas for a couple years - - I can only hope that’s the problem - - because this borders on undrinkable.
