3 Fonteinen Straffe Winter
Hazed amber with a decent haze. Light balsamic and musty aroma. Like a balsamic acidic lollipop with a duller acidic finish. Notes: Bottled in 08 drank in ’16. I bought this bottle at the 3 Fonteinen while living in Belgium in ’09-’11 and brought it back with me. It was aging ~6 more years before opening for a bottle share at Eric’s, Dec ’16.

3 Fonteinen Framboos (Framboise)
2014 bottle from Ian opened up at the 2016 Ottawa Year-end Gathering. Murky red with no head. Funky with a light tartness, strawberry and raspberry, a bit musty. More Cantillon like in the enamel peeling and fairly acidic, mild+ carbonation and full body, quite fruity but have to be honest that it wasn’t what I was expecting. We have one more bottle to open at some point, hoping some age bring it back to 3F deliciousness.

Sampled from 2008 750ml bottle and shared by thomas hall. Pours a hazy caramel yellow brown colored brew with a fast dissipating off-white head that leaves behind a film top. Aroma of brown sugar, caramel malt, a hint of dark pitted fruits and oak. Taste is medium bodied, no carbonation with flavors of powdered caramel malt, brown sugar and dark pitted fruits. Finish is neutral with some oxidation and light brown sugar aftertaste.

Crystal clear golden beer without head to speak of. Aroma has white wine and barrel note with sour green apples. Taste is very mild for gueuze, there is sourness but not that much, some sweet fruity note and green apples. Flat carbonation with medium body makes it watery beer. Disappointed for sure.

Sweet, acidic, fruity flavour of lemon, grapefruit, orange, green apple, white wine, brett, horse blanket, caramel and oak with a dry, sour finish. Light body with a watery to oily texture and flat carbonation. Very nice, lots of complexity.

Carbonation is gone from this bottle. Brown color. A little sugar and some yeast. Rather than a faro, it is like a we’ll balanced Belgian ale. Even though the palate suffers, it still Has good flavo.

Hazy dark amber pour with no head. No carbonation at all. Really nice nose a hint of funk and malty sweetness. Taste is nice but you must wonder what it would have been like when carbonated. Malty toffee and some funk.

Pours a near clear ruby red with a pink head. The smell is intense kriek nose which is what one would expect and some cinnamon. The taste is a bit of Jolly Rancher cherry candy without the sweetness. Big rich oriel flavor with some herbal freshness ending dry and tart. Light in body with smooth carbonation.

A 750ml corked and caged bottle, bottled on 30th June 2015, and best before 30th June 2025. Poured into a Cantillon ballon glass. It poured a hazy deep ruby red colour with a thin pinkish head that faded fairly quickly and left only sparse to no lacing. Aromas were of strong cherry tartness with jammy fruit sweetness and oak. There are hints of raspberries, lemon zest and light funk. Tastes sour, tart, cherry, raspberry, oak, lemon zest and vinegar with a touch of funkiness. Light to medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Overall this was just great. Surprisingly the cherry was much more prominent than the raspberries and the funkiness was less than expected but, this was still extremely drinkable, tasty and enjoyable. On my must buy list.

3 Fonteinen Oude Geuze Golden Blend
375ml bottle. Pours a hazy ruby gold, with a smallish off-white head, which lasts well and leaves a little lacing. Leather, oak, sour cherry and citrus peel make for an enticing aroma. Strong sourness up front offers sour cherry and grapefruit, leading into a woody, leathery mid-palate. The finish is fresh and sour, with floral notes. As always with 3 Fonteinen, this is exceptionally delicious.

From notes. Enjoyed at a tasting Kyle finally made it to at Mickey’s on December 01. 750 mL bottle, 2005 vintage. The pour is a dirty reddish color with a thicker pink head and a couple spots of lace as it falls to a film. This is an interesting thing. There is a plastic VOC thing happening on the nose. There is a light rubber band thing going on that I’m not crazy about. There is a good amount of cherry and a nice tartness, but it’s just not as crisp and clean as I was hoping it would be. The flavor is much of the same. The cherry is a little dry and the VOCs and rubber band are still prevalent. The mouth feel is thicker and syrupy with a brighter carbonation and a lingeringly sweet and tart cough syrup thing happening that just doesn’t do it for me. Maybe this needs to be a little fresher.

From notes. Enjoyed at a tasting Kyle finally made it to at Mickey’s on December 01. 750 mL bottle, 2012 vintage. The pour is a nice hazy golden orange color with a thick white head that slowly recedes with a light soapy lace left. The aroma is pretty damn good. There is a nice dry oak and a good citrus acidity up front. A good mineral addition comes through with a lovely funkiness and a hint of brett. The flavor is much of the same. It’s balanced, sour, tart, citric, funky, and just everything you want. The mineral addition is a little surprising, but well balanced. The mouth feel is a touch heavy for what it should be and well carbonated. The aftertaste is lingering funkiness and citric acid. It’s a great beer.

3 Fonteinen Intense Red Oude Kriek

I think I have to accept that lambic styles are not my thing. There seems to be a potential for something that I would like and for that reason, I have been trying different lambics. This one was the most revered of them and also the one, I liked the least.

From notes. Enjoyed on draft at the Drie Fonteinen Restaurant on November 12. This one had an advertised age of 6 months. The pour is a dark orange, almost brown, with no head at all. This is syrupy and looks nothing like I was expecting for a lambic. The aroma is very sugary sweet. There is a strange bitter malt going on. There is a light Bandaid thing happening, but it’s just interestingly sweet. The flavor is definitely syrupy. This is sugar sweetness, a strong barrel, and just a strange flavor overall. The mouth feel is very heavy and syrupy. There is no carbonation and a lingering medicinal sweetness. I will never understand the lure of young, unblended lambics. Not my thing at all.

From notes. Enjoyed this on draft at the Drie Fonteinen lambik-O-droom on November 12. This is a 9 month old lambic. The pour is a dark coppery orange without a bit of head or lace. The aroma is incredibly sweet and earthy. There is a light metallic note to it and a strong wet oak. It’s really interesting, because it’s unlike any other lambic I’ve ever had. The flavor is much of the same. There is a light sourness to it, but it’s light. There is a heavy sugary sweetness that I don’t really care for at all. There is a light Bandaid thing happening on the finish that is a turn off. The mouth feel is thick and syrupy with a real lack of carbonation and a lingeringly sugary finish. This is definitely young. Damn.

Bottle at Moeder Lambic. A lambic I’ve really wanted to try for a while. Unfortunately I found it a bit too young, over carbonated and a bit too one dimensional in flavor profile, some barnyard funk, citrus flavors and straw. But not much else. Hoping that I will be able to revisit this soon and that I just suffered from an over carbonated bottle.

Aroma: Upfront is a smack of toasted poppyseed, popcorn, fresh cut hay & dried out straw, white grapes and oak rear their head as it warms. Taste: Big carbonation, subtle sourness, same bright, fresh flavours follow the nose, but we get some juicy pale fruit on the finish. Overall: Very unique geuze, super bright & fresh this would be perfect sitting outside on a sunny day in the countryside.

Thanks leighton for the .375 Pour. 2 finger dense frothy head nice lacing, 2 finger fades to a 1 finger line. Welp, this smells really amazing. Cheesy, eggy, lime, wheat, citrus, funk, lemon zest, just incredible. I haven’t had a Gueuze in a while so please forgive me. The flavor is okay. I’d like to get a bit more flavor out of this. The mouthfeel is A+. top notch. Velvety, dense, loaded with an explosion of CO2 but the flavor up front is light, lemon and fruit cake. At the finish though, you get lime juice, pineapple, wheat and white wine. As it sits for 5-10 minutes, it’s really really nice. The beer has opened up more. I wouldn’t say decant this one but perhaps pour and wait a bit.

2016 vintage

Funky barnyard and citrus fruits aroma.
Taste is very bitter, bitterness resembling that of grapefruit albedo, some white fruit pit taste (grape pits). Medium sourness. Rather long and unpleasant finish of pits and grapefruit albedo bitterness.
Overall I was greatly disappointed by this one. I guess I should not have drank it fresh without aging as it’s harsh and needs balance.
