Birkenhead Premium Lager
Golden pale colour, light toffee & fruity flavour almost like appletizer. Minimal bitterness. Sweet and malty, not really any lager qualities.

Birkenhead Pride Old English Bitter
Ruby red colour. Head is off white, with lots of large bubbles. Aroma is malty-biscuit, toast and caramel. The biscuit character comes through prominently in the flavour. Medium sweet flavour, could probably do with a little more bitterness. Fairly light bodied and quite light ABV at 3.5%, but tastes more like a 5%. All round a satisfying bitter. I haven’t come across many examples of the style from SA brewers. This is a solid attempt.

Birkenhead Laughing Croc
A light amber beer with a sweet mild ale taste. It’s a blend of two or so beers and rather tastes like it, and not in a terrible way but it begs the question: why does this beer exist? It’s too sweet for a bitter and too malty for a pils but it only offers the sum of its parts and nothing more. Perhaps drinking this one well chilled would do it good but the label is talking up some nonsense when it states its appeal to the connoisseur. It’s like Frankenstein’s monster, just not nearly as cool.

Big improvement on their earlier stout, which was, to be generous, a terrible beer. This has got a mouthfeel and flavour profile that would be more fitting of a 8% ABV stout and that’s my main criticism - I want more oomph. But they’ve certainly crammed in the chocolate malts and I think they’ve done so convincingly; it drinks firstly like a stout and then the bitter chocolate flavours develop - the way it should be. Carbonation is fine and on the softer side, another good choice. Very dark colour and a nice creamy tan head, which develops a lighter cover after time. Pleasing to the eye. I’ve criticised this brewery savagely before and must now give them their due credit: it’s a good stout. Just give it a bit more warming alcohol and it’ll be a very good stout.

Birkenhead Dry Cider
Bottle from a Liquor City store not far from OR Tambo airport, bought in May 2016. Crystal clear golden color, big white head with good retention for a cider. Aroma of apple flesh, light sulphur. Taste has apple skins, light tannins, dry finish. Tasty and easy drinking.

Birkenhead Chocolate Malt Stout
Such a disappointment of a beer. Chose to buy this over a Young’s Double Chocolate Stout, a poor choice indeed! The beer pours a lovely pitch black with tan head which dissipates quickly. On the first pour the smell is distinctly chocolate but then it transforms into a terrible artifical chocolate smell mixed with cheap boozie smell. Very watery in the mouth and slight tastes of coffee and the sickly artifical chocolate taste. Wont ever buy this again

Bottle. Nice toasty stout with lots of good roasted malts and chocolate malt backbone. Sweetness could use a bit more balance.

Aroma: Medium roasty, coffee, light cherry, banana. Appearance: Very dark brown, clear body with red hues. Small, light brown head, fair retention. Flavour: Medium roasty, toasty, coffee. Medium-light sweetness, light bitterness (slightly accentuated by the roastiness). Light banana. Medium-dry finish, lingering sweet coffee. Final finish is roasty. Mouthfeel: Medium-light body. Medium carbonation. Overall: Quite fruity for the style. Needs that dash sourness to make it "spark" 500 ml bottle, poured. 13A. Dry Stout

Birkenhead Laughing Croc
Aroma: Medium toasty, chocolate, vanilla. Medium-light hops, fruity. Appearance: Clear, amber body. Medium, tan head. Good retention. Flavour: Medium-light bitterness. Medium-light sweetness. Light caramel, toasty. Light fruitiness. Medium dry finish, with lingering hops and caramel. Mouthfeel: Medium body. Creamy, medium carbonation. Very smooth. Overall: Nice. But a bit more bitterness will make it more balanced. The sweetness is cloying. The color is too dark for a bitter. Too much body. 500 ml bottle, poured. 8A. Standard/Ordinary Bitter

Birkenhead Malt Stout
Pours dark, almost pitch black with dark tan head. Head retention is low, but it managed to maintain a thin foam throughout. Aroma is molasses and malt, light roast with a sweet coffee. Tastes a bit sharp, but a nice sweetness and toasty and roasty finish. A slight bit too carbonated for my tastes, but this definitely gives a acidic bite to what would otherwise be quite a sweet beer. Well worth drinking this!

One of my favourites. All of you naysayers are clearly deprived of bear hugs and love. Only add the lemon for a hot African day, otherwise drink it straight. Slightly sweet with honey and citrus. My upcountry friends always have this on the top of their order lists of what i should buy and send them.

Birkenhead Honey Blonde Ale
Draft at brewery. Had this at a restaurant and it was diacetyl city, but here it is clean. But it is served with lemon. Smells refreshing, with honey graham crackers permeating. The lemon actually does add some nice balancing acidity for brightness. Light and fresh, not bad really.

Draft at brewery. Medium gold, not much head. Aroma is subdued in a taster glass. The biscuity malt character is nice but is this a pils? Its neither crisp nor hoppy but the finish is floral. It is too delicate.
