Kuhnhenn Bourbon Barrel Mead
Bottle at home. Pours a clear golden color with no head. The aroma and flavor have big barrel character, bourbon, vanilla, oak, honey sweetness, I like many of their meads and this is good, just not the wow factor that others have.

Kuhnhenn Blueberry Eisbock
Bottle graciously shared by doodler. Stop doodling and start noodling! Fairly clear brown appearance with little head. Aroma is straight up blueberry preserves with some caramel and brown sugar. Mouth feel is a bit goopy but not horrible. Sure, it’s sweet and high boost but it sure is hidden well. A treat to try.

Kuhnhenn Rose Currant Mead
2006 bottle from the brewery, shared 5/20/17.
Good pour, leaving the sediment that has accumulated behind. Deep golden in color with high clarity and light legs left behind.
Peppery spice in the nose is joined by a good brace of honey that is equally balanced by light acidity. Age imparts a light vegetal quality but it’s soft, passing and not flawed. Pepper and mineral with shockingly no booze, sharpness, alcohol or strong ester at all. Honey still remains clear and fresh.
Light-to-moderate richness remains with soft, lightly sweet but very well-balanced notes of baked apple and soft wood tannin. Tart, spice and vegetal notes linger with a very strong black pepper character. Incredibly balanced and drinkable. It says 16% but that hardly seems perceptible, let alone possible here. That Bret and Eric were doing meads on this level 10-15 years ago is very impressive.

Draught @ St.Gambrinus Beer Shoppe. Faintly cloudy pinkish yellow broth-like color with whitish foamy head, fresh citrus aroma, low carbonation, medium bitter orange peel taste with a perfume like flavor, thin body, medium bitter flavorful finish. There is a certain sake-like quality to the taste, very flavorful.

Kuhnhenn Raspberry Eisbock
Vintage ’12. Thanks to Matt for this awesome brew!

Kuhnhenn Nut Brown Ale
Reviewed from notes. The appearance was a dark ruby red color with a finger’s worth of white foamy head that fell off at a gentle pace. Light stringy lace. The aroma had some sweet to roasty nuts, somewhat like pecans and hazelnuts. Some sweet cereal grains touch down upon some toast, light smooth sweet bubblegum, and then chocolate. Nice earthy spice rounds it out. The flavor yielded to the sweetness initially and brought in the earthy spice ever so lightly. Slight earthy/herbal and grassy blended to the sweet side of the aftertaste. Soft sticky sweet bubblegum to chocolate finish. The feel was about medium bodied with a fair sessionability about it. Some carbonation. ABV felt fine. Fairly smooth along my tongue. Overall, where did the bubblegum come from? Not sure if that was intended, honestly, I didn’t mind it in this one, but definitely different for a brown ale. Still, I could give this another shot.

Kuhnhenn Monkey Wrench
Reviewed from notes. The appearance was dark brown color with a finger and a half’s worth of tan foamy head. Light lace. The aroma had some roasted nuts, caramel/toffee malts and a steady grassy bitter hoppiness. Light chocolate and a little bit of earthy spice. The flavor balanced nicely between the roast and the sweet fully leading into the aftertaste and following into the finish. The feel was about medium bodied with a pretty good sessionability about. Carbonation felt good and the ABV felt good too. Overall, nicely done brown ale well worthy of having again.

Kuhnhenn Dunkel Weiss
Bottle from Mike. This was poured into a weizen glass. The appearance was a milky soft brown color with a foamy finger and a half’s worth of head. Mild lace, somewhat messy, sliding. The aroma had some toast, light clove, some white bread, even lighter banana esters. Milk chocolate with a little bit of caramel at the very end. The flavor blended the banana sweetness to the clove somewhat sweet with spicy under touches. Light bubblegum. Nice aftertaste of the bubblegum, wheat and caramel. Quick toast-like to bubblegum sort of sweet finish. The feel was between light and medium bodied with a decent sessionability about it. Carbonation felt fairly light. ABV felt appropriate. No wheat kick as I usually expect that from the style. Semi-smooth along my tongue. Overall, mostly nice dunkelweizen, seemed aged to me, but I can’t argue because I don’t get to try a lot of this style given where I currently live.

Nip bottle received in trade. Deep golden pour leaving some subtle legs on the glass with a swirl. Distinct curry nose with supporting honey, lime & coconut. Plenty of spice. Very light leathery oxidation. Tiny sweet, tiny sour & spicy taste. Soft, tiny dry, slightly astringent, tiny tart & tiny boozy mouthfeel. Very weird but I do kinda like it.

Nip bottle received in trade. Deep golden pour leaving some subtle legs on the glass with a swirl. Very prominent clove nose with a pleasant floral citrusy honey base. Light caramel, raisins, ginger & allspice. Hint of lingonberry. Slightly sweet, floral & spicy taste. Soft & boozy mouthfeel. Long spicy finish with light honey & red berries. Cool mead. Has aged with dignity. Reminds me a lot of mjuk pepparkaka. I even detect a hint of lingonberry.

Kuhnhenn Blueberry DRIPA
On tap at HopCat Detroit on 4/29/17. Opaque, milky purple in color with a thick, light purple head. Aroma of blueberry, malt and light hop. Big blueberry flavor with maltiness before a light hop finish. This beer makes up for every blueberry beer I ever had where I couldn’t detect any blueberry. Would have liked a little less blueberry to really gauge how well the flavor blended with the hops.

Kuhnhenn Chocolate Raspberry Port Pyment
30.04.2017, 0,375l bottle (2012 vintage @ 15%, label marked 12 oz) @ home:
Flat, deep reddish color. Aroma is slightly dry boozy, bubblegum, minerals, paper, alcohol, chocolate, sour raspberries, grass, weeds, dark berries, artificial sweetener, honey. Taste is slightly dry sour-ish mineraly, paper, bubblegum, minerals, grass, berry skin, chocolate, artificial sweetener, alcohol, bark, dark berries. Medium bitterness, slightly watery and mineraly mouthfeel. Not my cup of tea. Maybe it’s better drinking it fresh...

Kuhnhenn Put the Lime in the Coconut Curry Mead
Bottle shared at schramm’s balcony bonanza. Poured a dark golden colour. Probably the weirdest recipe to come up with. Smell is exactly like it’s name, even after it’s age. Sweet coconut notes, light tartness of lime, maybe a bit to much curry for my liking, sweetness of honey, orange, and cardamon spice. Taste has slight heat coming from the curry spice, light lime tartness and a sweet honey aftertaste. Fun to try

Kuhnhenn Blueberry Eisbock
From notes. Enjoyed at Doug’s house for the Whale Tasting and Poker Night, almost 18 months in planning. 375 mL bottle, 2012 vintage. The pour is a dirty deep purple brown color with a thin ring of light khaki colored head and a couple long legs as it falls down. This smells great. It’s like blueberry juice. The flesh, skins, everything blueberry and I just love it. The smooth fruit and no alcohol. The flavor is a little sharper. There is a light alcohol aspect to the flavor of it, but it’s so balanced and lovely. It’s a little harsher than I’d like, but it does much better than the barrel aged version. The mouth feel is thicker and heavy with a very soft carbonation and a lingering blueberry skin and hint of flesh. Oh man. This is just spectacular. Thanks Tommy!

Kuhnhenn Bourbon Barrel Banana Bochet French Toast (B4FT) Mead
From notes. Enjoyed at Doug’s house for the Whale Tasting and Poker Night, almost 18 months in planning. 375 mL bottle. The pour is a darker copper amber color with a couple bubbles of what could be a head and no lace. The aroma has a ton of cinnamon. There is a lot going on, which is a little surprising. It’s a light banana bread that moves through to almost a cinnamon French toast. It’s really good, and complex. The maple kind of fades out toward the back end, but I like it. The flavor is much of the same. There is the strong cinnamon bomb up front before the banana bread comes rolling through and then the light honey and maple come through. I just love it. It’s complex and delicious. The mouth feel is thick and syrupy with a viscosity that lingers and a lingering banana and cinnamon on the back end. Surprisingly good.

Kuhnhenn Big Tony’s Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout
From notes. Enjoyed at a tasting at Ryan’s on April 20. 12 oz bottle. The pour is a nice dark black with a thin ring of brown head and no lace. It seems a little thin, but there are some good legs of alcohol on this one. The aroma is really alcohol dominated. There is a strong dark fruit and a little sweetness on the back end that I like. The dark malts really work well with the light oak and heavy char and alcohol. The flavor is very similar. It’s a little leathery and full of dark fruits, with the strong oak coming in a little late. There is a light vanilla and a heavy char. The mouth feel is a little bit light with a softer carbonation and a lingeringly dark fruit and leathery aftertaste. There is a late bourbon that I don’t mind. This is pretty damn good.
