From draft at BeerTemple. Pours dark brown/black with a small tan head. Lots of coffee and vanilla, sweet chocolate, roasted malts. Not really tiramisu, more like a thin roasty stout with lots of vanilla sweetness.

Deep from the cellar selection. Light black licorice nose. Such great text texture. Like black velvet it just glides down the throat. Has held up so well. Liquid black gold. Beer of the year albeit for its age!

330 ml bottle. Clear amber with a fluffy white head. Pineapple, mango, white grape, pine and a herbal note on the nose. Taste is a mix of tropical fruits at first before a firm pine resin and pepper bitterness peaking in the mid-palate. Pretty clean finish with an oddly herbal aftertaste. Good, but a little off-centre.

Aroma is a mixed bag of things, chocolate and sour steeps fruits, and Ash? Taste is all the things of smokey, chocolate, and it’s bitter to quite sharp near the back. but it has a incredible mouthfeel and leaves you a bit stunned and smiling.

Massive sour/tart aroma in a hazy yellow pour to start gives way to an enticing citrus aroma as it warms up. Big citrus body is nicely tart and makes for a hugely refreshing summertime brew.

On tap at Smiths. Super savoury aroma. Almost a honey soy glaze type thing going on. Flavour marries that with more sweet caramel. Whole thing reminds me of a sweet teriyaki marinade and I don’t know if I like it. I don’t think I do.

Tuatara APA
5.8%ABV. APA. Poured out golden amber. 12ºSRM Nose has sweet ripe oranges and mandarins. Sweet orange blossoms. Light caramel in the nose as well. Mouthfeel is soapy. Palate has graham cracker, pie crusts, bread crumbs. Hops are citrus peel, pine, cilantro at the end. Bitter is resinous and sappy. Finish is medium with an aggressive bitter that fades quite quickly. Overall drank more like a west coast style IPA than an APA. Goes on Favorites List!

Tuatara Indian Pale Ale
5%ABV. IPA. Poured out amber. 12ºSRM. Mouthfeel is soapy. Palate is light and clean with pale malt, light sweetness suggesting lightly browned toast, wonderbread and sweet dough, keep in mind that the sweet is light but the palate has a nice ponderous sweet bready body. So it’s not all light and sweet. There is a nice slightly sour, fruity body to the palate which suggests juice, maybe some fresh-squeezed orange, especially a cloudy milky fresh-squeezed juice with a lot of pith. YOverall very sour and lemon juicy as far as the palate goes. Hops are resinous, pine, bitter melon, there is an emphasis on bitter rather than the pine or the citrus. So not so much on the parent aromatics and more emphasis on the bitter betas. Finish is medium with a clean bitter back of the throat bitter, which I have come to associate with Columbus. Goes on Favorites List!

Slight gusher. Murky golden color. Tall off-white head and decent lace. Earthy malt, dry gras, grain, vanilla, light citrus, and some nearly over-ripe fruit. Sure smells like an ale. Sweet start that leads to a bit of bitterness and sugar cookie flavors. Some light molasses in the finish and linger. Wondering if this bottle might have some age on it. 1/14

Bottle - don’t get Tiramisu- get lots of charred malt which gives a bit of a rough mouthfeel - plenty of bourbon flavour - but no creamy choc coffee... so no tiramisu. Otherwise it’s a decent bourbon stout although a bit rough around the edges.

Tuatara as a whole produce some very good beers, but this is not one of them. It is by no means bad, but the elements of the beer intended to create the ’German style’ are very overpowering and I don’t think I will be buying this again any time soon.

Tuatara Tomahawk American Pale Ale
(Bottle) Pours slightly hazy golden amber with small beige head. Lovely aroma of pine and citrus with biscuity hints. Light bodied and well carbonated. After a refreshing citrus foretaste, hops take over. They are the dominant flavour straight through to the finish. Whilst they dominate, they do not overwhelm; it’s nicely balanced with some biscuity malt notes. The finish has some very pleasant bitterness. Excellent APA.
