Tuatara Solstice Spiced Saison
August 2017 - 330ml bottle at home as ’Tuatara Solstice Spiced Saison’, 5.2%. Bottle is ribbed for my pleasure. Pours fizzy with a huge foamy head that is hard to control and forms a translucent dark amber beer, highly sparkling, cratered head endures and leaves thick lacing. Aroma is apple esters, candi sugar, waffles with golden syrup, maybe maple too. Body is unsurprisingly light and frothy with fizzy carbonation. Taste is very interesting - breathy and musty yeast with a maple candi sugar background, then minty notes turning to ginger, menthol and cardamom with an almost champagne-like finish. An odd but interesting beer. (7-4-6-3-14=3.4)

4.7%ABV. ESB. Poured brown amber. 18 SRM. Nose has a rich beery aroma. Roasted chestnuts. Mouthfeel is beery and carbonated. Palate has roasted grain, bread crusts, dark wheat toast. Hops are noble, just there and perfectly balanced with a broad oaky flavor. Overall, a very good exemplar of an ESB, but with a bit more carbonation than a traditional ESB.

Tuatara Kapai
Old beer in a new bottle! Poured from it distinctive 330 ml bottle into a tulip glass, it appears a clear orange gold shade, topped with thick white froth, which did not retain well, but left thick lacing on the glass. The aromas are exceptionally fruity, in a tropical way - mango, pineapple, grapefruit in the mix, with some floral and pine. Taste is lightly sweet, then fading to light bitter, through to the longish finish. Nice level of carbonation, not too biting, but complements the medium bodied brew well. The aroma and taste is a nice variation on the pale ale, showcasing what the NZ hops can do!

Tuatara XV 15th Anniversary Russian Imperial Stout
[email protected], from Alko Stockmann, Tampere, Finland. Quite nice balance of roasted and licorice flavors, while going bit to the licorice side. Roasted malts, licorice, some dark fruits. Averagely balanced. Medium taste spectrum and long aftertaste with roasted malts. Strong/medium body with medium/low carbonation. Overall, bold but too simple for the style and percentage.

Draft at the Konttori, Tampere, Finland. Red color, off-white head. Piney hops and darkish malt in the aroma. The flavor is caramel malty with harsh hops and sweetness. Not really a West Coast IPA I'm looking for. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Flavours were caramel, pine, malts, sweetness and bitterness. Aftertaste was malty, hoppy and bitter. A very malty amber ale with some hoppy notes.

Poured from its 330 ml bottle, it appears a hazy golden yellow hue with some decent white froth which receded rather rapidly. The aromas released are typical of a hefeweizen or wheat beer - some cloves, plenty of malt, and some vanilla. Despite what others have experienced, I did not detect any banana or spices in there. Taste is solid malty, very much in line with its style. Overall, a solid decent hefeweizen.

Tuatara Tomahawk American Pale Ale
This seems to be the successor to their American Pale Ale, which weighed in at a slightly higher ABV of 5.8%. Poured from the unique reptilian-scaled 330 ml bottle (which resembles the previous APA bottle label in many respects) into a tulip glass. The appearance is an opaque copper orange tone, topped with generous froth, which did not retain well (despite the above average levels of carbonation). Aromas are typical West Coast Pale Ale - grapefruit and pine predominantly. Taste starts of lightly sweet, then lightly piney bitter all the way into a rather short finish. carbonation is above average in this medium bodied brew, but does not distract from the tastes. Nicely balanced!

Tuatara Mot Eureka
Poured from their unique 330 ml bottle with the scaly, dino skin texture into a pils glass. The appearance of this pilsner brewed with NZ hops is a clear pale golden tone, topped with a moderate head of white froth of which a thin ring is retained throughout the drink. The aromas are a mix of bready malts, floral hops, and earthy doughy yeast. Tastewise, there is a little sweetness at the start, but mostly a clean crisp bitter flavour throughout, over the distinct bread and dough malts. Mouthfeel is light and crisp with an average level of carbonation. Nice, memorable example of a pilsener, thanks to the unique mixture of hops used.

Tuatara Tripel Barrel
Bottle from BeerMa. Pours a clear bright gold, bubbles galore, nice low creamy head. Decent yeast-forward aroma, plenty of orange, spice, a fair showing of lager malt grain. Flavour is nice, a helping of yeast/funk carried by orange. Lots of clove and pepper in the backhalf. Perhaps lacks the breadiness and complexity of the forerunners in the style, but satisfying taste nonetheless. Medium/full feeling body with no sign of the 8.5%, tingly and tangy notes linger, quite refreshing in summer. Good stuff overall.

Double IPA with loads of hopiness and a yeasty tang that is different but not unpleasant. The gold standard of double ipas that you return to after trying another excellent double ipa to remind you of what that type should taste like. This beer has been around for a long time and is still almost peerless.

An attractive 33cl bottle from Westholme Stores, Goring. A bright amber pour with a tight white head; aroma of fresh grapes and gooseberry; light and fragrant in the mouth with a light fizz and then a gooseberry bitterness; levaing a clean crisp finish. An excellentr single hop beer that really shows off the Nelson Sauvin hops.

Pale golden color. Frothy white head, very carbonated. Sweet malty nose with lots of fresh cereal notes. The mouth is sweet with stewed vegetables and cereal notes. Very carbonated. The beer is fairly fresh - I assume cold conditioned to Japan and technically sound but still not up to top level from Germany.

Tuatara APA
Slightly hazy copper and amber coloured body with a nice three to four centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of rich malts, with a lot of caramel and toffee notes along with some grasses and hop bitterness along with some alcohol around. Medium-bodied; Strong herbal flavour at first with some tea-like flavours with a touch of yeast and alcohol around. Aftertaste shows more of a toffee and caramelised sugar like sweetness and a dose of lighter alpha acid hops showing some more English and earthier flavours. Overall, a decent APA (assuming that A means American), but not too great and way more Earthy than a typical APA, and shows more to me of an EPA with some pungent notes. I sampled this 33 cL bottle purchased from Jason’s Market Place at Taipei 101 in Taipei, Taiwan on 24-July-2017 for NT$145 sampled in my hotel room here in central Taipei, Taiwan on 27-July-2017.

Super hazy golden coloured body with a peach glow and a thick, four to five centimetre tall pure white head. Aroma of rich super banana-y scents along with some light spices and a good deal of wheat and yeast - very pungent and very bright. Medium-bodied; Strong wheatie flavours with bubblegum, cloves, coriander seed, yeast, bananas and a little bit of allspice noticeable along with a big dose of curacao sweetness, all ending with more yeast - very nice throughout with a smooth, yet rich flavour that shows quite well, especially in the head. Aftertaste shows some nice flavours with bananas, yeast and wheat by far the strongest. Overall, a nice german hef with some good flavours throughout - add in to the fact that this beer is nice to have here in the East and also I didn’t have to carry this heavy bottle across any oceans! I sampled this 33 cL stubby bottle purchased from Jason’s Market Place at Taipei 101 in Taipei, Taiwan for NT$135 on 24-July-2017, sampled in my hotel room here in central Taipei, Taiwan on 26-July-2017.

Tuatara Double Trouble
RIch, super hazy, raw golden coloured body (think Manuka honey from NZ) with a copper glow, and a thick, three to four centimetre tall off-white head. Aroma of rich alcohol and biting hops with tropical fruits, pine, resin, alcohol, yeast and some deep malts all noticeable throughout the long smells. Full-bodied; Strong rich hop bite at first from pine and tropical fruits that shows a ton of alcohol, a good deal of grain and earthier malts along with some toffee and lightly caramelised sugar sweetness throughout. Aftertaste, a good beer with a lot of hop character with a good deal of hops, but nothing too terribly amazing for the style - a good beer for sure, but nothing amazing; However, on this side of the world it is a bit unique and nice to try. Luckily even more, I was in a relative non-beer part of the world (although Taipei is quite nice!) and drinking this here without lugging it halfway around the world is even better! I sampled this 50 cL thick, studded bottle purchased from Jason’s Market Place at Taipei 101 in Taipei, Taiwan on 24-July-2017 for NT$250 sampled in my hotel room here in central Taipei, Taiwan on 26-July-2017.

Copper coloured body with a great, five to six centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of amazingly rich white grapes, floral, grassy and especially tropical fruity hops with passionfruit, lychee and guava notes around. Medium-bodied; Assertive hops up front with a nice flavour and interestingly enough, not much bitterness. Great mild malts that show some body but not overwhelming - the hops speak for themselves here, as they should. Aftertaste is mild with a lot of hops and tropical fruit notes, but not much alcohol and hardly any malt make this very nice and hop-centric. Overall, a great beer to try and nice to sample this hop varietal without traveling to New Zealand nor bringing this heavy bottle back home! I sampled this 33 cL studded bottle purchased from Jason’s Market Place in Taipei 101, Taipei, Taiwan on 24-July-2017 for NT$135 sampled a few hours later here in my hotel in Central Taipei, Taiwan on 24-July-2017.
