Cherry Chouffe Rouge
Draught, small stable reamy pink hwad, clwar and quite deep red color, aroma and flavor of cherries and marzipan with some roots coming through in the flavor and the cherries feel a bit artificial, quite steong but not cloying sweetness with a light pleasant sourness to balance. Quite nice and drinkable.

Mc Chouffe
On draft at Three Kings. Very faint bread-like and date aroma, pours opaque deep brown with minimal but frothy head and mild to moderate carbonation which makes it easy on the palate. Taste is initially of dates and prunes, finishes slightly alcoholic, yeasty and oaky. Not as sweet as a dubbel or quad (like I initially expected), and far more complex. This reminds me if a mashup between a brown ale, dubbel, and Saison. Interesting for the palate and flavorful.

75cl bottle, Bignens Vins Balexert, shared with Thiru. Lovely bright reddish brown colour, thick slightly off white foam. Very flavoursome, sweet thick fruity malt, some spice, estery. Very high carbonation, fine bubbles. Bitter to balance but no more. All pretty damn tasty.

What's not to like about a beer like La Chouffe? Looks great and has a refreshing taste. A consistently good Belgian blonde. The alcohol strength is actually masked quite well. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Goldgelb, leichte bis mittlere eintrübung. Tolles frisches aroma.

Sehr cremiger, ausgeglichener nachgeschmack. Dabei noch süffig, wie sein heller Bruder. Volltreffer!

La Chouffe blond is one of my favorite relatively easy to come by belgian blondes. Very true to style and very balanced for my palate. Furthermore, there is a gnome on the bottle. Delish.

20170505 HOME; 33 cl bottle; BB 07.2018: A yellow beer, which is light cloudy and had an good white foam layer, but this become thin. An aroma of malty, alcohol, spicy and some yellow fruit, like light citrus. The taste starts somewhat malty and sweet. Direct also alcohol in the taste with yellow fruit, like apple, peach and somewhat citrus. Direct also some bitterness which becomes stronger and somewhat dry in the aftertaste.A good full body.

330 ml bottle, served in 0,3 l mug. Brown colour, nice white foam head. Raisin, coriander, dried fruit, brown sugar, herbs, caramel. Sweet-malty taste. Alcoholic warmth. Soft carbonated, medium body, oily texture. It seems to be the ’brown brother’ of the regular La Chouffe, but I like this one a bit more.

La Chouffe
33 cl. bottle @ Home. Aroma: not very intense aromas of grains, cereals, slightly kilned malts. Hints of wheat, grapes, spices, citrus. No hints of alcohol. Appearance: straw to light golden color, slightly hazy, very high head thickness. Perfectly white head, made of big sized bubbles, very creamy. Medium Brussels’ lacing. Very high retention. Many tiny bubbles moving up from the bottom of the glass to the head. Taste: medium sweetness, low bitterness, low sourness. Pleasant flavors of malts, grains, cereals with hints of citrus, spices, fruits, grapes, caramel. Alcohol level is very well hidden and not noticeable. Balance is on the malts’ sweetness side. Palate: medium body, oily texture, medium carbonation, quite long sweet finish with flavors of slightly kilned malts, grains, cereals, with hints of spices, grapes, fruits, citrus peel. Overall: very refreshing and pleasant flavors. Excellent appearance and amazing retention. Alcohol not noticeable despite of its high level. Good aromas and flavors of slightly kilned malts, grains, cereals, malt sweetness, citrus peel, fruits, spices. Good beer.

330 ml bottle. Hazy dark brown brew. 2 finger fluffy off-white head. Stays not for long. Leaves not much lacing. Fizzy carbonation. Aroma: toffee, caramel, spicy yeast, herbs, dried banana, hops, phenols. Flavor is dark malts, nougat, spicy sweetness, hops, yeast. Smooth and creamy mouthfeel. Rich in taste and aroma. At a blind tasting I would bet that it’s a good Abbey Dubbel. Definitely I will try it again and again.

330 ml bottle. Hazy honey amber colour brew. 3 finger long-lasting white head. It is clearly seen how lots of minute bubble streams are spouting from bottom of the glass. Aroma: loads of ripe apricots, orange zest, caraway, coriander, clove, soapy phenols. Flavor is intense fruity spiciness, dried apricots, citrus peel, lots of clove again. Low alcohol warmth. Dry & very spicy aftertaste. (OMG! So much zest and clove again!) That goes without saying, we’re a dealing with a solid Belgian guy, but I cannot name it a supreme BSA for it’s so damn spicy. It’s like a heavywheight witbier-y motherfcuker. Overall, that’s a pleasant experiense.

The looks of the beer are nice. The color of the beer is a nice brown. It looks like a good Belgian ale. The beer is cloudy and has a nice satin look, perhaps caused by a yeast sediment. On top of the beer a nice layer of soft almond coloured foam is formed. The bulk collapses, leaving a nice drape. The smell of the beer is good. It is a decent winter ale. I smell a certain creamy and slightly savoury yeast smell, which is nice. There are also nice malty aroma’s and some syrupy smells. There is heavy alcohol in there, all resulting in a nice and warming smell. The taste is like the smell. There is a strong yeast flavour, sweet malts but hardly any hops. There is a nice syrupy sweetness. Palate is simple. Medium body, smooth and creamy texture and medium high carbonation. The finish is not that long and a bit dry. All in all, nice beer but not the best beer on earth.

Chouffe Houblon Dobbelen IPA Tripel
330 ml bottle. Pours a hazy, dirty dark yellow with a large white head. The aroma is medium malty - sweetish grain, light caramel - and likewise lightly yeasty and hoppy, grassy and a little metallic. Medium to full body with a medium carbonation with a light sweetness and a medium bitterness that increase towards the warming alcoholic finish. The flavor starts malty with caramel and bready notes that are soon overpowered by a strong hoppy bitterness. Overall, nothing stands out in particular, but it is a very enjoyable beer.

La Chouffe
(From the keg) Pours a hazy straw-yellow, with fine carbonation, and a dense white head. This beer has a hop-heavy aroma, with lots of candied lemon peel. This is balanced by sweet caster-sugar malts, and hints of fresh bread and cereal. The beer quickly takes on a highly vinous quality: hints of oak-aged brandy and apricot kernel develop into tart grape skins, green apple, and juniper berry. The finish is dry, becoming increasingly tart, leaving a pleasant sour fuzziness on the tongue. A very pleasant, smooth beer, which makes easy drinking.

It suprised me that I have bought a gnome with red grapes! Deep amber color, mostly vanishing off-white head. Aroma is whitewineous - grapes, fruity. Light to medium-bodied. Crisp, champagne-like carbonation. A bit sweetish, apple-like grape flavor. Light fruityness leading to a bit sweet-acidic finish. Champagne-like, more even more Sovetskoye Shampanskoye -like. Good Achouffe-quality but not really such a beer I would like to drink a lot.

One that got away. May 2016. In requisite tulip off the in laws. Glossy ruby with a disappointing grey-beige head shrinking to the perimeter of the glass. Enticing sticky molasses and muscovado aroma with malt loaf, nail polish remover and raisin. HP sauce and Cola spice; ripe plum, dried herb, nougat and soap in the blender. Discreetly boozy and spiced.

Light amber. Spicy yeast, fruity esters, and caramel are at the center of this beer, with a bit of hops in the aroma. Full, sweetish taste that finishes with a dry, solid bitterness. The abv is completely hidden. Full body. Overall, a very good strong ale. This sample is not hoppy per se - it might be a bit dated - so it does not come across as an IPA hybrid, but the additional bitterness balances the tripel flavour very well, which is a little sweeter than usual. Now I just need to try a fresh sample.

Bottle from Alko, Helsinki. Pours murky dark brown with a quickly diminishing bubbly head. Carbonation seems surprisingly lively at first, but ceases rather rapidly. Aroma of raisin, caramel, malts and yeast. Taste is mostly sweet dark malts and yeasty spiciness. Caramel and dark fruits (raisin) provide nice background along with surprisingly bitter hoppiness. Body is a bit watery and finish a little blunt. Taste is a bit dull and palate lacking that creamy smoothness I so much appreciate in my belgian dark ales. Usually Chouffes are top notch, and based on some other users’ comments I read on Mc Chouffe I’m wondering whether I got some bad batch?

Pours dark brown to black with a beige, lasting, creamy, lacing-leaving head. The aroma contains hay, dried fruits, caramel, hops, herbs, yeast, some chocolate and coffee. It tastes medium to light sweet and medium to light bitter. The finish is long, light roasted, dry, bitter and with notes of chocolate. Alcohol is very well hidden. Creamy texture and good carbonation. In many ways, it’s literally the brown counterpart to the regular La Chouffe. Balanced and tasty.

Chouffe Houblon Dobbelen IPA Tripel
Golden color. Highish carbonation. Intense aroma. Very hoppy and yeasty. Had some tropical fruit tones and some spices, yeast esters buried underneath it all. Smelled like a good mix of Trippel and IPA. Taste was spicy and hoppy, with some clear pine tones. There is a lot of sweetness, but it is hidden beneath a strong layer of bitterness, not just from the hops, but the spicy phenols as well. Some clove, nutmeg, pine, grass. Finish is quite intense, though the beer is overall quite balanced, in that everything is quite intense. It is challenging and pleasant at the same time. Very much what one would expect from a highly-hopped trippel. It’s a good beer, but might be too much. The alcohol come through, but I might just be sensitive to it. Definitely a one-and-done type deal.
