Johns Grocery Generations White Ale
12oz bottle. Pours a clear pale yellow with a small white head. Aroma is wheat, spice, lemon, citrus, banana, and grass. Taste is banana, coriander, light citrus, clove, cracker malt, and some minerals. Finish is a little bitter and yeasty - the only real disappointment in this beer is the harshness of its finish and the subpar aftertaste. Medium body - not unpleasant, but oddly heavy. High carbonation. Crisp mouthfeel.

Millstream Back Road Stout
12oz bottle. Pours black with a humongous pale tan head. Aroma is raisins, grain, light molasses, and wet leaves. Taste is roast, metal, some dull chocolate, and a faintly caramel sweetness. Oatmeal doesn’t really come through. Decently bitter. Fairly light bodied. Moderate but too astringent carbonation. Thin, foamy mouthfeel. From the bottle, the mouthfeel is sudsy and unbelievable bad - Palate’s a 2 when poured, 1 from the bottle.

Millstream Hefe Weissen
12 ounce bottle, cellar temp, Ayinger weizen glass, from Brennan’s in Monroe WI. Very pale gold, huge smooth head that diminishes a little quickly, some lacing...the fairly typical banana-bubblegum nose is accented a bit with lemon and faint vanilla; if there’s clove to be found, I haven’t...the body is lemony-tart, a bit more acidic than I expected at first, but a good bready malt develops and the acid fades away to a great extent, though never disappearing altogether...finish is tart, lightly acidic, with a nice full body that doesn’t quite get heavy, moderate carbonation. All in all pretty solid and better than I remember this brewery’s offerings being years ago.

Johns Grocery Generations White Ale
bottle from beer of month club from jenny. last shipment :<. nose is somewhat clove and banana, bubblegum. saison like but more white ale-ish than saison. smooth and full, medium sweetness, bitter and wheat meet up for a clash here. pretty good for a style that is often awful imo.

It seems a little light in body, but has a great flavor. Strong roasted coffee flavor. Nice brown head formation on a black beer. Retains its head. Good finish hop. Little or no nose hop. Aroma of roasted barley. Could have more smoothness from the oats.

Millstream Fuzz Peach Kolsch
Draft to a pint glass. Appearance is hazy and a light-yellow color. Artificial peach aroma overwhelms the nose. Flavor is much the same - fake peach and white bread. It is light bodied and crisp, but hard to tell if the base style is kolsch or a whatever blond ale. It can be drunk, but this is not a good fruit beer or beer for that matter.

Millstream Fuzz Peach Kolsch
Cloudy bright yellow-gold pour with a thin, creamy, bright white head. Aroma is peach candy, apple, light bread, sweet wheat and corn, and just a bit of weird vanilla pudding, the weird gluey kind in frozen dinners. Flavor is starchy grain, tart, pitty-peach flesh, a hint of straw, dried bread and big mineral notes. Light body, oddly slick immediate entry, crisp and lightly acidic thereafter with a light, but sharp and blanketing carbonation. Meh, weird implementation of the fruit, I’d be surprised if there weren’t lots of artificial flavoring in this.

12 oz. bottle. Lightly hazy orange in color. Aroma shows me weak grass clippings, mild caramel.

Flavor of a caramel malt backbone, light floral, and mild pine. Weak bitterness. Not bad but more a APA rather than an IPA classification. Just mildly ok.

This seemed to have more of a saison thing going for me, with bubblegum, cloves dominating the nose and also present in the taste along with a dry iron sort of taste. Clear, pale yellow, nice thick lacing pattern. Thanks for the trade Ron!

This was awesome. Thanks for the trade, and the Iowa beer Ron! Nice complexity, nice hidden booze, true to style. Spicy, apple nose. mouthfeel is thick and syrupy, a bit of booze burn in the middle detracts a tiny bit. Then a very dry finish. Hazy dark orange is attractive to me.

Millstream Back Beat Pils
12oz bottle. This is better than I had anticipated. Hazy yellow-tan body. Thin, glass-rimming, white head. Zesty peppery aroma, bready, a touch or rye in there when it is pointed out, but nothing major. The Citra hops really add to the fresh feel, but it still stays comfortably in Pilsner territory. Enjoyable beer, solid example of the style.

Funny story how I got this beer. My daughter was to bring me back some beer from her visit to Denver. She forgot! So as she is driving back thru Iowa she picks up this Mix12 pk at a gas station. Turns out, Iowa was the only state that I have not yet had a beer from that was made in that state! I now have the USA map filled in. OH, I did not like this beer. I’m not much for honey beers and it did not mix well. I’ll try it again thou and maybe it’ll grow on me.

12 oz bottle. (John’s Grocery) Iowa City, IA.
Halloween rooftop rating session in the dark. Chicago, IL.

Dark reddish brown color with a small tan head. Sweet toasted malt, sugary sweetness, pumpkin, spices and mild darkness in the aroma. The flavor is sweet toasted malt, spices, licorice, cough syrup and pumpkin. Not my idea of a good imperial stout nor a good pumpkin beer.

Millstream German Pilsner
12 ounce bottle from Brennan’s Market on University Avenue, Madison, served just out of the fridge in a König Pils glass. Moderate to large fluffy head decays slowly to a light haze atop the luminous pale gold body...fresh, light grassy aroma, earthy humus and faint pepper and honey...on the tongue, lightly sweet at first, slowly growing moderate bitterness which climaxes in a dryer, somewhat hard and mineralic finish...body is quite full, verging on too slick/syrupy but never getting there, carbonation soft and tingly. A very, very solid example of the style, in particular when considering the fine interplay of these lightly sweet pale malts and the dry herbal bitterness of the noble hops. Balance. Not quite outstanding but I have the feeling this bottle was not at it’s freshest - couldn’t tell of course because even though there’s a month-line on the side it’s unchecked. If you’re going to date for freshness, go all the way and actually provide legible information!

Bottle from Chicago visit. I think a family member just left this in my suitcase when I wasn’t looking. Nose is strong in grass and faint cat pee character reminiscent of Victory Prima Pils. Lots of straw malt aroma. Lightly hazy pale gold with a small white head. Taste is more hop forward with a pleasant pepper quality to it. Actually a very enjoyable German style pils.

Millstream Back Beat Pils
Picked up a single 12-oz bottle at Brennan’s Country Farm Market in Brookfield, Wisconsin. Pours a clear golden straw colored brew with an average sized off-white head the quickly dissipates and leaves behind some spotty lacing. Aroma of lemon zest, golden grain malt, and a hint of rye (dry) malt. Taste is light to medium bodied, some extra carbonation with flavors a lemon zest, some red grapefruit, golden grain and some tart citrus. Finish has a sharp tartness followed by a mild grapefruit and golden grain malt aftertaste. Definitely some extra Citra going on here.
