Olde Saratoga Death Wish Nightmare IPA
Pours clear amber with a frothy eggshell head. Aroma delivers dry, woody hops and roasted coffee, as well as hints of - fresh coffee beans? pepper? - chocolate and fresh malt. Flavor features woody hops, fresh coffee beans (well, something vegetable and a shade peppery), roasted coffee, and hints of chocolate and malt. Mouthfeel offers fairly firm and smooth body if not lots of fizz. Spooky!

Olde Saratoga Death Wish Nightmare IPA
2015 BJCP Category: 30A Spice/Herb/Vegetable (base style: 21A American IPA)

AROMA: Strong honey/lemon sherry aroma (oxidation). Minute citrus notes. No coffee. No malts. 5/12

APPEARANCE: Copper-orange hue; fairly clear. Large eggshell froth retains and laces well. 3/3

FLAVOR: General amber/pale malt flavor and mild sweetness up front. Strong honey/lemon lollipop taste throughout. Some orange citrus flavor at the apex and minor bitterness. Coffee emerges briefly on the finish. Slight astringency on the aftertaste. Clearly an old bottle. 10/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium-light body; moderate carbonation. Smooth texture and fairly easy drinkability overall. Leaves a dry, starchy aftertaste. No alcohol presence. 3/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: I’ve had this fresh and it’s great. If there was a freshness date on the bottle I wouldn’t have bought it. 4/10

TOTAL SCORE: 24/50

Olde Saratoga Death Wish Paralysis
2015 BJCP Category: 30A Spice/Herb/Vegetable (base style: 8B Schwarzbier)

AROMA: Coffee is prominent, but not overtly strong. Smells of ground beans; nothing sweet or faux. Maillard products are noticeable with clean fermentation. Mild nose overall. 8/12

APPEARANCE: Seemingly black or brown but actually deep ruby/garnet hue. Clear. Large tan frothy foam retains and laces well. 3/3

FLAVOR: Light dark malt flavor up front; lightly sweet. Subtle notes of milk chocolate and bready malt plus Maillard products. Medium-low bitterness with slight spicy/floral hops. Coffee emerges on the finish but is mild after the first swig. Bitterness and flavor is rather restrained; no harsh astringency or burnt character. Some residual sweetness, but it fades quickly. Clean lager character. 14/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium-light body; moderately-high carbonation. Smooth texture; highly quaffable. Aftertaste is fairly clean. 4/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: This works as an American black lager with some coffee added. I was expecting a much more intense coffee character, though. 7/10

TOTAL SCORE: 36/50

Ashy orange nose. Clear amber, thick head. Fudge, ash, orange peel. Medium body, soft carbonation. Pervasive chocolate notes are weird, considering it is brewed with coffee, but it’s enjoyable.

Tallahassee, Fl - Whole Foods Market - 22 oz bomber - drank onsite with a burger. Sparkling, medium golden pour, soft, snow white head, light lacing. Faint spruce hints, some essence of freshly ground coffee. Solid citrus bite, light coffee hints, some passion fruit sweetness. Decently thick mouthfeel. Pretty solid.

it lingers from an unimpressive taste too full of malt syrup and seemingly light on the hop. still that lingering harshness in the finish is noteworthy. a butterscotch and hop harshness not found well in the flavor. would score higher if categorized as an apa.

Bomber via Beer world Kingston. Reasonable price that will bring me back for more. I will state the price point and the fact that it was a new IPA got me in the store. I may not have snatched it up so readily if I would have realized that it had coffee added. This being a sore point with me in the past, I poured on. Bright golden with a rich white head in the glass. Visually it was a lovely IPA. Nose of whats that? attempting to place it without looking at the zombie woman on the label. Zoinks its coffee. First to last its there... but in a new place....an IPA. I enjoyed it much more here than in some burly stout aged for six months in sloths basement over gypsy cursed barrels. Enjoyable.... Will try again.... which is high praise in this market.

Olde Saratoga Death Wish Dream Pie
Enjoyed this one at Doug’s house on March 30 as part of an IPA tasting that spiraled out. 22 oz bottle. The pour is a lighter black/almost cola brown with a thicker light tan colored head that fizzles out to a thin collar that just about vanishes. The aroma is pretty plain. There is a little vanilla and cocoa in there, but it’s just a little light. The aromas of roasted malt and a little alcohol bland together really well, but it’s just a little light. The flavors are a bit better. The vanilla and chocolate really mesh well and bring out a bigger character. The roasted malt is there, and the alcohol fades nicely. It’s surprisingly good. The mouth feel is thin and light with a decent carbonation. The aftertaste is lingeringly chocolate and vanilla with a hint of cracker. It’s like a dream pie, no joke. Pretty sweet.

Amber beer with a medium light tan head. Nose of light citrus, soap, and perfume. Flavor has some citrus flavors, but they are obscured by a waxy, rather unpleasant aftertaste that eventually gives way to a medium bitterness, but the odd flavor lingers. Not good.

Beer club bottle into tulip. Amber w decent head. Floral pine aroma. Surprisingly mild and balanced hop / malt profile for an American IPA - I don't normally like IPA so this is good from my perspective. Resinous hop comes through on the palate but not crazy bitter. Decent for an IPA. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Saratoga IPA
12 oz bottle One the beers that come each month from AOPD. The ale poured a clear light amber with 1/2 inch off-white head and lacing. Floral hops and pale malts greet you. el malt with good c-hops, herbal, clove field, quite nice. The taste is a classic hopped up IPA with citrus and pine resin on the tongue. The ale has a medium body with average carbonation. Bitterness impacts the tongue a bit at the end, but contributes to a long dry conclusion.

Saratoga IPA
Poured from bottle into a pint glass Appearance – The beer pours a lightly hazed deep golden color with a one finger head of white foam. The head had a decent level of retention, slowly fading to leave a little bit of foamy lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma of the beer is heaviest of a citrus grapefruit smell, but has other nice hop smells of a pine and grassy nature as well. Along with these aromas comes some light smells of a sweeter tropical fruit as well as a hint of a caramel aroma. Taste – The taste begins with a mix of a bready taste mixed with a slightly drier cracker taste and a decent showing of a grapefruit hop taste right from the start. As the taste moves forward, the taste dries out even more with the little bit of tropical fruit and caramel that were present upfront, fading as the taste moves on. All the while, a grassy and herbal hop taste moves onto the tongue bringing more resinous hop flavors to the brew. Toward the very end, a nice earthy hop joins the flavor profile, leaving one with a rather nice blend of resinous hop and crisper, but deep malt flavors to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the somewhat crisper but still thick side, while the carbonation level is on the slightly lower side. For the west coast style the brews feel is rather nice as it both accentuates the rich dank and grapefruit hop blend, all while maintaining a decently easy drinking feel. Overall – A fairly nice west coast IPA overall. Nothing too out of the ordinary, but a good one to try none the less.

Olde Saratoga Premium Lager
Poured from bottle into a pint glass Appearance – The beer pours a very deep amber color with a small head of a just off white color. The head has a good level of retention, fading over time to leave a good level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma of the beer is big of a caramel aroma with some other lighter bready smells. Beyond these aromas comes some very light notes of an herbal and grassy hop smell. Taste – The taste begins with a bready and caramel flavor which create a strong base flavor for the brew. As the taste advances a little bit of brown sugar joins the taste which sweetens it even more. Toward the end a little bit of a grass and grain taste comes to the tongue balancing the sweet rather nicely and leaves a rather bready and moderately sweet flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the slightly thicker side for a lager with a carbonation level that is average. For the style it is OK, but a little thinner of a body and a little higher carbonation may have been slightly better for the style. Overall – A fairly decent lager, but nothing too out of the ordinary. Worth a try, but not worth going out of the way for it.

Growler consumed a week after it was filled. I went out to the refrigerator in my garage and realized I had this growler that I bought a week ago and forgot about. Fortunately, it held up very well. Pours a clear deep reddish black with a moderate brown head that lasted beyond mid-glass and left a thick layer of foam with each sip. Pleasant aroma of chocolate with some mild roast and a few very light notes of coffee. The flavor is more of a mocha and quite nice with a bit of nuts as well. Mild bitterness at the finish. Fairly well rounded mouthfeel. Very nice ale.

The body has a nice amber color with a slight haze. From the pour I got a tall off white head. It is made up of mostly loose soapy bubbles that quickly settles down to a thin cap that holds on near to the end. Lacing is limited to just a few spots at the top of the glass. There is some good malt aroma here with nice sweet bready and nutty sweetness. I also pick up some leafy hop notes as well. Its flavor is medium bodied and basic but good. As I had expected from its aroma there is a nice bready malty base with some sweet caramel and light nutty notes mixed with some leafy herbal hop bitterness. Its texture is a bit smoother than I like to see in a lager but not a big distraction.
