Cannery Hop Chowdah
On tap at St. Augustineís, pours a cloudy bright yellow with a small white head. Aroma is very fruity, with lots of pithy stone fruits, piney hops and juicy biscuity malt. Flavour follows accordingly, with a very juicy tropical stone fruity character upfront, with a lot of piney hops, some resin, and a biscuity malt base that provides proper structure. Juicy and nicely aggressive in the hop department. One of Canneryís best. Excellent.

Draught @ St. Augs. Hazy blonde with a thin head. Pulling light hops off the nose, but this isnít the best vessel. Touch sweet, touch fruity hop. Mellow bitterness. Fairly clean despite the yeasty appearance. Decent, balanced example.

Cannery Hop Chowdah
Draught at St. Augustineís, Vancouver
Cloudy blond color, small head. Interesting aroma, very fruity: mandarine, peach and a hint of lychee. Good strength, lean body, not too dryí; it has a very good pale malt base, tasty but not obtrusive, and powerful juicy hopping, fruity (orange, cedar, hint of pineapple); some hop resins in the final.
Very interesting.

Cannery Darkling Oatmeal Stout
Aroma: Grapefruit, surprisingly, odd choice of hops for this stout. Lightly toasted chocolate and cocoa. Pleasant, restrained, not at all boozy or sweet-smelling. 6/10. Appearance: Beautiful black pour with a mocha head that lingers and laces. No complaints here, thatís what I want a stout to look like. 5/5. Taste: Mild, milky-chocolatey up front, fading to coffee at the back. A very ímediumí stout, not sweet, not quite dry. A little ashy on the finish. Overall, pleasant, certainly sessionable, but it doesnít distinguish itself either. 7/10. Palate: Thin but silky, lingering astringency is mild, carbonation is nearly flat but effervesces pleasantly on the tongue. Astringency builds to mild stinging on the palate, one point docked there. 4/5. Overall: 14/20. I wouldnít turn this down if it was handed to be. Simple, drinkable, sessionable stout, and at 5.5% you wonít mind going through a pint or two. Iíd have a very hard time trying to choose this over Cannery Brewingís far, far superior Maple Stout, though!

Takes a while to get past the wax cover. Almost black. Delicate negligee of brown foam. Big coffee aroma with strong nuttiness. Velvet body. Improves my view on this brewery. Chocolate. Dry. Could pass the weekend with a six pack of big bottles.

Really nice Canadian take on a stout. The base stout is spot on with the full body of a much stronger stout. The maple adds a sweetness on the nose. 750ml bottle.

650ml bottle pours black in color with a finger of light brown head that leaves some spotty lacing on the glass. Aroma is chocolate, roasted grains and coffee. Taste is a chocolate malty sweetness with a roasted grain and coffee bitterness finishing a little dry. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Overall, a nicely done brew that is balanced and tasty. Recommended.

Dark brown. Thin head. The nose is quite coffeeish, with some nice dark malt sugars underneath of it. On the palate, itís light for the taste, sweet chocolate and balanced roasty coffee. I like this one - a refined, balanced coffee stout.

Cannery Stumbling Goat Dry-Hopped Maibock
Clear dark golden color with dense activity. Creamy and frothy white 3 finger head, lasting around 10-15 minutes, with good legs. Flavors of berries, apples, sour yeast, candies, sweet grains, toffee, a bit cheesy and minty, peppers, grassy and leafy hops. Highly bitter and sour tongue coat, with thick fruity sugars. Oily medium body with extra crispy carbonation. Strong finish, astringent bitter earthy hops, thick pine tar on the tongue, with an aftertaste of pepper, faint roasted grains, and faint barrel aged feel. Quite bold and low on accessibility, while interestingly fresh and balanced. Strong but pleasant to drink, wakes you up. The flavors are nice and fits well with the finish. Overall very good quality craft.

Cannery Knucklehead Pumpkin Ale
Bottle to tulip Consummation: Light pumpkin and mild pumpkin spices which is a huge bonus in this scene; some bitterness and malt too Adjunct: Doesnít smell much like it tastes, some hints of red pepper and clove but thatís about it; hazy amber with some particulates with a frothy, two finger, off white head; Iím not that fond of Canneryís beers, but from first taste, I thought that this was going to impress. Unfortunately the taste is decent, but the aroma and appearance are lacking. Still, not a bad beer and Iíd drink it again.

Cannery Blackberry Porter
Appearance: clear ruby to deep brown with two fingers of rocky beige head, excellent retention and well-defined lacing. (5/5) Aroma: blackberry, roasty malts, chocolate and coffee, light booziness. (7/10) Taste: moderate-high sweet, moderate bitter, mild tart. (6/10) Medium-full body, soft carbonation, sweet and lightly boozy mild tart and bitter finish. (3/5) Might be thornless, but it sure as hell ainít sugarless. Think chocolates filled with blackberry liqueur and youíre getting pretty close. But, other than being way too sweet, itís not terrible. It doesnít actually taste artificial, and the berry flavours work well with the chocolate, for pretty much the same reason people make berry-filled chocolates. It all ends up being a bit of a mess in the finish, though, with sweet, bitter, tart, and alcohol all fighting it out for dominance. Iím not sure what to suggest to fix that, actually, but I wouldnít say no to another while I thought about it, so there you go. (14/20)

Cannery Kiss Yer Cousin Kentucky Common
Appearance: clear pale to medium amber with one fat finger of loose ivory head diminishing rapidly to a think skim, spotty lacing. (3/5) Aroma: grainy malt, caramel, bready, light nutty and coffee. (6/10) Taste: moderate sweet, mild bitter. (6/10) Medium body, moderate carbonation, clean short duration bitter finish. (3/5) So, what, itís ďKiss Yer Cousin Kentucky CommonĒ because itís a kissing cousin to that other, California, Common? Yeah, OK, I can see that. It actually starts off pretty similar to Anchor Steam. Not quite as much depth, perhaps - and if youíve had Anchor Steam, you know thatís not saying much! Still, though, itís reasonably clean, and the corn (Kentucky, get it?) doesnít feel like a macro adjunct. But, if you ask me, you coulda called it ďKiss Yer SisterĒ, because itís about as exciting as that. (12/20)

Cannery Trellis IPA
Bottle from Brewery Creek, Vancouver
Hazy amber color with red-copper hue. Aroma and flavor show a strong grainy quality of malt; the mouthfeel is dry, the bitterness correct, the hops are a bit resiny but not bright. As suspected from the ABV, this is a Pale Ale, not an IPA; but for the hot summer months itís an enjoyable drink.

Appearance: cloudy pale gold with two fingers of loose off-white head, good retention and lacing. (3/5) Aroma: apricot, wheat malt, lemongrass. (6/10) Taste: moderate sweet, mild bitter, mild tart. (6/10) Medium-light body, moderate carbonation, off-dry lightly tart and slightly astringent finish. (3/5) ďDrupaceous,Ē huh? I think thereís a pill for thatÖ a little blue oneÖ (Yes, I know it refers to stone fruit - maybe you even knew that apricots, peaches and cherries are all drupes. But did you know coffee is too?) I guess itís pretty much what it says on the label - apricot and wheat, and thatís pretty much it, without much complexity to speak of. A little bit plain and a little bit astringent, but not unpleasant. (12/20)

650 ml bottle. Plain orange-and-blue label, not like that pictured above. Pours a nearly clear honey blonde colour with big white head that diminishes to 1/8" fed by continuous supply of tiny bubbles. No sediment at all. Aroma of wheat malt and apricots. Taste is a clean dry ale with a touch of subtle apricot or rather nectarine. Mouthfeel dry, with a bitter finish. Not particularly characteristic of a wheat beer. Still, quite refreshing and suitable for a hot summer day.

Cannery Kirk in de KŲk Baltic Porter
Appearance: Alpha morning without interrupting light... Aroma: Oddly absent in the chalice: a dozen fishhooks with traces and broken bits of metal . From the vessel anguished cries of bean-deprived molasses, petrified toffee, sticky cherry coffee, cigarillo sighs, and stale chocolate kisses. A suspicious alley dweller mumbles midnight pleasure inexatitudes on the fringes of my nostrils.... Taste: Slivers of dried wood agitate the imagination. Something of the primitive aquatic slithers among the tongue and molars. Burnt herbs fall apart in the mouth to dust the path of the arrival of the Prince of Alcoholic Cola, an entity who leaves wafts of vanilla in his wake.... Overall: Neither King nor Emperor of the Fortified Black Continuum, yet not without potential.

Cannery The Muse & The Golden Promise
Appearance: clear pale gold with two fat fingers of growing rocky white head, good retention and patchy lacing. (4/5) Aroma: citrus, grassy/herbal, biscuity pale malt, catty/skunky. (7/10) Taste: moderate sweet, mild bitter. (7/10) Medium-light body, moderate carbonation, off-dry mild bitter and warming finish. (3/5) Definite Simcoe hops, starting off as almost-but-not-quite-catty and almost-but-not-quite-skunky before settling down somewhat - and I donít mean that in a negative way: it tiptoes right up to the line, but stops just shy of being offensive. The net effect is one of decent complexity and depth in a pleasing APA. Kind of odd that the ABV is as high as it is for the style, but itís not intrusive, and manifests only as a mild warming.
