Barley Johns The Dark Knight (Returns)

Can shared at Platypus After Tasting. Black with a ring tan head. Aroma is very boozy, big oak barrel, alcohol, chocolate and vanilla. Flavour is heavy sweet and above moderate bitter. Medium to full bodied with carbonation. A little to fresh with too much obvious alcohol.

Can (labeled as Maibock Fruhling Starkbier); pour clear amber with a khaki head; aroma of caramel and toasted malt with some citrus hints; taste is similar with caramel, toasted malt and the citrus being a little more prevalent than the aroma; dry, light bitter finish; pretty good

Barley Johns Dill Pickle Beer
This was actually rather good. The skewer of pickles and cheese garnishing the glass isn’t that strange if you think of this like a Bloody Mary; savory is not the enemy of alcohol. The pickle flavor comes out harmoniously with the pickle when you eat them together, but when you consider the beer on its own, it’s still balanced between the amber/APA base beer and the horseradish. I’m not surprised that Barley John’s pulled it off; it’s a thoughtfully composed beer, not a prank. On tap at Giggles, MN State Fair, first day of 2017 fair.

I liked this more than Jack, but agree it is a weird. Even sweeter than the lambicus. dark amber color, heavy carbonation. Yeast in the aroma and the flavor. Too much sugar, this might sour and develop some more character with time. Some barnyard. Too sweet, but interesting effort.

Barley Johns Brett Brettanomyces Lambicus
Sampled at All Pints North 2017. it may have the yeast of a lambic, but I am not sure I would have put it in that category. It has a lot of brett character, it is surprisingly sweet, well carbonated, and some earth. Not sour, at least not yet but I could see this becoming very sour and very dry with time. it is an interesting wild ale with unusual character, just not much of a lambic. Very awesome they tried something like this.

Barley Johns New Brighton Lambic
All Pints North 2017. I am sure this is the first attempt in Minnesota of a commercially available unblended lambic. Still, as it should be, for an unblended lambic. Minimally sour, it might need some time and it seems young. Some yeast in the aroma. The few of these I have had have not been especially sour but this is probably the least sour of any of them. I respect the effort here.

Barley Johns Rosies Ale
On tap at the brewpub. Murky reddish brown. Smells of raisins, booze, dark fruits, and brown sugar. Tastes much the same. The menu says this is barrel aged and I can see how that could be true, but at this ABV, it’s tough to discern. Very strong dark fruit, raisins, brown sugar sweetness. Alcohol all over. Never cut by any bitterness or oak. Sweet boozy finish. Heavy. Only served in a 5 oz. glass, which is as much as I could ever drink. My wife asked, Is it good for what it is? Yes, though the category of beer in which it falls doesn’t really need to exist at all.

On tap at the brewpub. Clear orange. Smells of grain, light sweetness, and some fruity hops. Tastes a little citrusy and then fruity. The hop never screams melon to me, but I guess I get it. Light bitterness. Medium light body. Easily drinkable and flavorful.

Barley Johns Winter Ale (2011-2015)
2016/2017 version, which was closer to 8.5%. Tap at Sidedoor. Deep and sweet. As much of a brown ale as an amber. Winter Warmer all the way; Big, full bodied, rich malt tones. Steady off-white to beige head. Fennel and caramel lend an odd, earthy aroma. Amber and caramel malts, pleasant spice tone. Nails it. Great Winter Warmer.

Sample @ ABR 2016. Golden pour with a small white head. Earthy, hedgerow-like hop character on the nose. Gentle spiciness. Sort of chewy, sweet malt backbone seems to be overly dominant. Some toasted grain. Peppery hop bitterness on the finish. Medium body, a bit oily.

Barley Johns The Dark Knight (Returns)
Growler split at RBWG ’16 hotel lobby share, big thanks to Jackl who I once enjoyed some cock action with while his sister watched, 01/02/16. Black with a good tan covering. Nose is chocolate, vanilla fudge, dark fruit rinds, light peppery spice, jammy berry fruit. Taste comprises black forest gateaux, chocolate log, red berry jam, tofee fudge, mollases, light roast. Full bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a light boost. Solid impy number if a touch overly sweet for my liking.

Everyone seems to love this one. Let’s disagree, aroma is pure alcohol...nothing worth smelling here. Pours dark black...love stouts so it has potential, unfortunately initial taste is alcohol, kinda like drinking a shot of whiskey. Aftertaste however does work itself out into chocolate, caramel and other dark flavors. Quite nice actually. In the end $8.9 a pint and $34 dollars a 4 pack not worth it. Many others considerably better at half the price....

All Pints North 2016. Orange color and low carbonation. Light aroma. some strawberry. On cask, I think it is a real ale, and I like the experimentation, but it is a cream ale and it is hard to do much with that style. Light strawberry in the aroma and flavor, some salt taste.

Barley Johns The Dark Knight (Returns)
On tap at Ray’s in Tosa. Talk about a white whale!! Black pour, no head. Aroma has bakers chocolate, vanilla, caramel, light anise. Smooth and strong. The barrel kicks in harder down through the glass. Taste is big vanilla, dark chocolate, caramel, some ash, some licorice. The vanilla/caramel trumps all down the glass. Somewhat alcoholly, the blend is solid, if a touch rough. solidly carbonated. Full bodied. Finishes well blended between bitter and sweet. Time to warm, or a bottle to age (or it turns out -- a CAN to age, as the Barley John rep says they will be releasing in cans in the fall), and this could be excellent. As it is, "just" very good. 16.8

Winterfest 2016. A solid beer, but I feel like it is nothing I have not had many times before. Well roasted grain, moderate coffee aroma and and flavor, making it bitter. the alcohol is higher than I expected, but it was hidden and I did not pick it up in the flavor or the aroma. Good coffee beer.

5 oz. pour, on tap at the brewpub in New Brighton, Minnesota. Consumed on 3-18-16. Bright, burnt orange to rust to copper. Nice color. Buttery, malty smell. Sweet taste with a lightly bitter finish. Too sweet for my tastes. Fruity Pebbles cereal and condensed milk. A bit juicy with a bit of spice. Improves on multiple sips. Medium body, lighter than I expected. Ultimately just too sweet.
