Gritty McDuffs Maine’s Best IPA
Poured into a pint glass from a 12oz bottle. Nice, clear light brown appearance, but the head dissipated quickly (and virtually no lacing is there). The nose was evident with malty bread and caramel notes. It has a bitter bite that matches the 60 IBUs, but the English and German malts dominate. Seems to be an "Extra Special Bitter Ale" and not an IPA at all. Cheers!

Gritty McDuffs IPL
Draught at the brewery, 3/10/17.
Dark golden-amber with a good clarity and an off-white head atop that is medium-sized and shows moderate retention.
Another weird one to see from Gritty’s, though I guess they have done light lagers in the past. Smells like fresh, fruity, citric PNW hops and a light base of caramel-tinged honey-like malts. Clean and though slightly aggressive, no alcohol or heavy resin breaks through.
In the mouth it’s got a rather rich, malty body though attenuation is still pretty high. Engaging carbonation and lots of pineapple, ruby red grapefruit and lemon. Clean and fruity with no alcohol or flaw. Straightforward and well-made. Quite assertively bitter and malty for Gritty’s usually lighter, toned-down style.

Gritty McDuffs Wheat IPA
Cask at the Freeport location, 3/10/17.
Odd ruby-amber body has just a touch of haze to it. Off-white head atop is thin and shows moderate retention.
A strange mix of apple, strawberry and melon esters with pineapple and coconut?? I guess that must be the mix of wheat and yeast, though there doesn’t look like there is hardly any of either in suspension here; not that that’s a bad thing. Fruity, though, with some orange and red grapefruit notes, though I’m hard-pressed to find any real strong tropical notes. Clean otherwise, though this pina colada-character is slightly off-putting.
In the mouth it’s fairly soft, with engaging, low carbonation. Fruity and lightly malty, though not overly sweet and seemingly quite well-attenuated. Strawberry, cherry and pineapple mix with light honey and a touch of sharp, resinous character on the very estery finish. Not quite sure what to make of this. It’s like they were making a Gritty-style NE IPA but then it’s also served bright on cask. Lot of contradictions here, but the end-product is pretty drinkable though the strong pineapple and odd sharpness on the finish needs to be toned down a lot.

Gritty McDuffs Maine’s Best IPA
12 oz. bottle. Color is a caramel maghony with weak lasting white head. Aroma weak earthy pine and herbal notes.

Taste needs some help. Caramel toffee base with a slightly sticky texture. (WAY too much crystal malt) The hops are overly herbal and bold pine. The hops just come off astringent. Maybe I had an older bottle but… I doubt it. Sugar and astringent hops, no thanks.

Sample at brewpub. I'm probably not the first to say this but what a terrible fucking name for a beer especially if you don't deliver the goods. I wonder how many breweries started in Maine just to disprove this name. Anywho pours golden with a white head. Not much on the nose or tongue. Kind of dull for style. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
